You'll notice a lot of the anti-CNC crowd are also fans of 1950s Gibsons... which were made using machines identical to CNC machines, except the routers were guided by a physical template rather than a digital one. Same process, just more expensive and less reliable.
Guitar factories have several machines that each do one job, like a toy Play Doh factory. A little faster than a cnc but identical results.
I have no issues with CNC but I do have a pin router, which is what you’re talking about, and it’s definitely not less reliable. It will make exactly the template every time. Plus I can do things like joint and thickness plane so it can take the place of several machines.
@@mattliebenau9083: "less reliable" in that as a physical object the templates wear out over time, which is why all late '50s and early '60s Gibsons have crooked pegheads.
@@ErickC Ok. I guess to me that’s not so much reliability but more that they should have had master templates that they made new daily use ones from every few years.
PREACH! This is always on my mind when I see those dumb comments 😆
Also CNC's been in used for much longer the gibson and all ArTiSaN people think, they probably own CNC made guitars, without even knowing 😆
I had one bass player friend tell me that when I start paying bass, I really needed to get a 5-string, that it was the only way to go. Another serious bass player friend who also recently joined my R&B/funk/soul band, decided he needed a 5-string when he joined the band, to get that little something extra. Myself, I just need to practice my bass more. A 5-string is probably in my future eventually. For now, I'll stick to trying to learn traditional. Cool design, can't wait to hear how the humbuckers sound. Thanks for sharing!
Any season is Bass season!
Appreciate the discussion about maintaining/honing design ethos, Tim, as you evolve and continue to experiment with product here.
Terrific work on those 5 string Basses and I can't wait to hear how they play Tim! 👍👍🎸🎸
That pencil trick is really cool!
with kids in school I have no shortage of half used pencils to donate to the cnc :)
love love love the space age/googie aesthetic of the body shape of those guitars. Reminds me of my Reverend somewhat. I want one now
Bass! Yes!
Next up: 6-string headless multiscale bass. You know you want to.
you order it, I'll make it for you:) Stuff like that is too specific to just stock :)
Great video. I learned on a four, but play almost exclusively fives now (and BassVI). If I pick up a four string my brain easily swaps to my 18 year old four string self, if I then pick up a five it takes a few minutes to swap back to five brain, that four is embedded deep.
Yea, back in the day I felt like I had to "work too hard" when I played 5 string and the only thing I wanted it for as a low D, (not even a B or C), so I just bought a hipshot drop tuner :) Now that I don't play as much and don't have as deep a connection with the instrument, I don't think I'd have as deep a "culture shock". The Bass VI, is so guitar like, I have little difficulty adjusting. ll the notes are still in the same place!
@timsway yeah we have a few songs where I use the D and a few more that are in Eb, so the five is useful there, I also like having the ability to start a run/pattern on the B string.

Now I get 10% off everything right?
Time to go grocery shopping and fuel the cars!
Love your work Tim!
All airlines, night clubs, coffee shops... Everywhere in the world this works. If the clerk doesn't honor the discount just keep yelling "I know Tim Sway!" louder and louder until someone else comes to help you.
Warwick cuts and contour all of their basses on CNCs and finish sand by hand which is no different than this here. And Warwick basses are some of the best basses on the market so as Dewey said, "The future is now"
Great video. Super interesting process. Tim is too cool. Mahalo for sharing! : )
You are literally the best
Hi Tim. Any plan for making fan-fretted necks in the future ? I dont think I've seen you do that (and I watched your content for years). Why or why not ? Bonjour depuis la France, love your vidéos
He has made a couple fan fretted but they aren't full on guitar, the few that I've seen him make are either baritone or hybrid things. I'd like to see a fan fretted bass guitar and fan fretted regular guitar.
That would be so nice. I'm planning a 5 string multiscale bass build myself for CNC, but I don't know when I will have the courage to do it on my own :)
I've made several, guitar bass and baritone. Mostly custom orders. You order it, I'll build whatever you want! Just a couple examples, fanned fret bass (and a 5 string): ua-cam.com/video/F7ahIi9sz44/v-deo.html, guitar: ua-cam.com/video/B-RzIE1fPSc/v-deo.html plus baritones and stuff ua-cam.com/video/PcsxZ4b2Q9o/v-deo.html the list goes on...
TRADITIONAL
2:34 That one knows what it is doing but problem is that, other guy is the one, who program this one :D jokes aside... Keep up good work and same to your CNC :D I really enjoy watching your videos
LOL. yea, when I screw up, he screws up, too :)
I look at my upright and think it's missing a string. Extensions are just a band-aid.
Sweet! Now I can actually play something you make lol. I main 5 strings! :)
iim building an 8tringg prototype that when im done im looking to have scanned in 3d and configured into a cad file to be CNC'd.
Gibson built an Explorer bass for a country player back in the 1950s
I know! It’s fun to watch the Vs and explorers getting used in all sorts of genres before heavy metal hit the scene.
I wanna know the story of that mandolin behind your bandsaw in the end credits!
I just bought that to fix her up and electrify in a future video.
Any nay sayers poo pooing on your CNC is just jealous
I want one and would use it for everything
This is all great, but what I really want to know is if you are traditional in your bass-playing...
lol
105th view about to have happened. 24th LIKE.
Noice I was the 1000th view.
congrats! That means you win....
.....
.....
..... nothing.
HOORAY! Nothing!
I don't wanna sound negative cos I love your vids but man, I never like your doofy shapes. They look like cartoon guitars to me for some reason. Like guitars that cartoonist draw for their characters but they don't really know what guitars actually look like?
If everyone liked the same things the world would be pretty boring!
I actually completely understand the sentiment because I feel the same way about a lot of other designs I see (even some of the famous production models). However these designs work for me, but of course not everyone. I have a video I made a few years back where I go deeper into design issues as it relates to guitars (and the design I created I have since abandoned :) ua-cam.com/video/1A-y4Hw4zEU/v-deo.htmlsi=Re8YCCXHiOfLMISi
