I've known about the split ring device and the staple remover way for many years. Glad to see somebody is showing the younger generation the ways of the "Old Heads".

I've had a set of those pliers for years that I found. I had no idea what it was for until now. Thanks, buddy.

An even better alternative is the mighty P38 can opener. I keep one in my car console, one on my desk, two in my fishing back pack, two in my bugout bag, one in my work man bag. Opens cans, can be used as a letter opener, cut tape, open boxes, remove a splinter, make fire striking a ferro rod, a small pry bar for paint style cans et.al. even as a flat head screw driver, and yes, it works great for prying open split rings! Everyone needs a P38! Mahalo!

Staple remover is a great alternative to the pliers.
I always seem to need to open a ring when I'm not around them, so I've used many oddball items over the years after just cutting my nails, like pins, tooth picks, plastic flosser, nails, phone sim key pins, etc.
Your method is most definitely the preferred choice though.
    Thanks for the upload.

Jeff I think I remember you had a keychain tool that was green. Looked like an army helmet that also helped open split rings really easily.

Remember the Key Sergeant? I think you had a video about it. That seemed like a great tool to keep on your keychain.

If you need to deal with really tiny rings, smaller versions of split ring pliers can be found at craft/hobby stores. They're using in jewelry making.

I started using a keychain screwdriver for this a few months ago just because it’s always latched on a swivel clasp on my keychain
