    Thank you very much Anders , for putting yourself out here in interspace for our education and entertainment. I find it most interesting to see how things are done in other lands . I live a similar life here on the west coast of Canada , from the mountains berries , down through the valleys deer and fungi , onto the beaches shellfish and seaweeds and then onto the ocean for some fish , my neighbors , many from Scandinavia , and I do live in a slice of paradise as , it seems , do you. Enjoy and thank you again for sharing

    very nice video. so much debate over how to harvest. I would think since nature has sustained these in natural conditions, that plucking would be the most natural. cutting is not a natural event. I did not know you could harvest them even when it appears the tops are dried. are they still edible? or are you just eating those stems. Morels blend into the scenery. These chanterelles really pop! i'm excited to look!

    It has been a few years since I picked mushrooms. However I remember cutting Chanterelles, not pulling them out of the ground. By cutting them you are allowing them to come up again and again. You cut them close to the base and wait for a few days and they will come up again. Cheers:)

    • @loristrout4741

      +Julie Andrews that is wrong you might see another one but they only come up after a good rain. and if you see another in a few days it was already there when you saw the first one incase you are not looking at them all different sizes they are all about the same size.

    these are easy to find in the PNW. Look at areas that have been logged and replanted 10-15 years ago. You need that wood to ferment for quite some time and get covered by enough vegetative matter before mycelium will even take to it(pine, douglas fur, Cedar) because of the oils in the wood. I have filled 6-7 five gallon buckets in only a few hours doing this :D

    • @ZoneCracker
      @ZoneCracker 9 років тому +1

      They are widely spread here in Sweden so you can pick as much as you want. As long as you don't destroy the root system.

  • @inezblafla
    @inezblafla 10 років тому +15

    You should cut the mushrooms at the root, not as here pull the root out of the ground. The mycelia on the root ensure future years growth and are damaged when exposed to air.

    •  10 років тому +4

      No problem, they live more underground then over. They follow old tree mm.

    • @inezblafla
      @inezblafla 10 років тому +10

      Was taught by biologist that one disturbs the underground mycelia network when picking the fruits (mushrooms) and that one cause the least damage when one leave their roots in the ground. That the fruits spread their spores in the air and that mycelia do not need the fruit body to be picked in order to fulfil this function. I appreciate that you are an experienced mushroom collector, and will minimise soil disturbance in order to avoid unnecessary cleaning of the mushrooms. However, you post public videos in English which are consulted by beginners from all over the world, and you therefore have some environmental responsibility. Not everybody live near abundant Swedish woodlands, in fact most people consulting your videos will live in densely populated areas where local forests and mycelia populations are under considerable strain.

    • @Jefferdaughter
      @Jefferdaughter 10 років тому +10

      Apprecate your concern for sustainable harvesting! Mushrooms don't have roots... and the mycelium is usually extensive. Picking this type of mushroom should not disturb the mycelium to any appreciable extent; it is the fruit of the fungi and some mycologists say that it will not hurt the fungi any more than picking fruit hurts the plant, and will not prevent it from fruiting again - UNTIL it runs out of food. In the case of truly rare or endangered species, not picking at all is a great idea! As with many life-forms, damage or elimination of their environment is as much, or more, of a problem as over-harvesting. Paul Stamets says that mushrooms 'thrive on disturbance'.

    • @majam1n
      @majam1n 10 років тому +8

      ***** As I mentioned above, there is no scientific evidence that shows that cutting is superior to plucking for the health of the mycelium or productivity.

    • @supersur3921
      @supersur3921 7 років тому +1

      On the contrary! Never pick mushrooms by cutting unless you're absolutely certain what it is, and perhaps not even then. The bottom end of the mushroom fruitbody gives important clues that helps identify its kind. There is in general no risk to damage the fungus as it lives inside the earth and can be compared to a tree. The mushrooms we pick are the "fruit" of that "tree". Picking fruits from trees does not damage trees, and analogously picking mushrooms does not damage the fungus.

    Your video title says "How to find Chanterelle Mushrooms", but other than "follow the water" you do not give any information about their habitat.

    Have you ever thought of training a dog to sniff them out for you? They can cover a lot more ground, a lot faster, with energy to spare. You'd truly live up to your reputation then! =D

    I've looked for Chanterelles, but have never found them in abundance in US forests...this looks like a springtime search...no?
