Remember that you have probably overloaded the drawer if the front wheels come off the ground when you fully extend it.

Time to make a zero clearance insert for the table saw. I made some for mine out of a polypropylene cutting board and now it cuts as nice as my tracksaw.

I made my own rails for my van. Quote was $1500 for runners to do what I wanted so I made mine from 20mm box pipe and skateboard bearings. Works well and can take heaps of weigh (140kg per bearing).

Adding a small notch to the hinge side of the drawer to let the top boxes open up smoothly without having to pop them out somewhat would be a nice touch.
Lovely build mate. I liked that you left the cut edges exposed for a bit of contrast. Wasn't so sure one putting a black fascia on panel though. I though you might revamping the whole van.
I'm sure people have already said this but painters tape on the bottom edge of the table saw cut is your friend. A sharp blade helps too :)
Just add roller bearings to the underside of the drawers. In that way you can reduce the load on the drawer slides

Hey Scott I drilled some tiny holes in my makita sustainers and put a bit of nylon string from one to the other to make a handle. Really helps when pulling them out of shelf. 👍

Hey Scott, have you tried making a zero clearance insert for your job site saw? It'll be an easy project and should help minimize tear-out.

Whether using track saw or table saw, if wanting to prevent chipping in veneer or finer plywood, you can masking tape over the cut line before the cut. Also performing the cut more quickly can help.

For your system 2s get some 50mm webbing cut a strip. Fix it to the back and let some hang out of the front. All you need to do is tug on it and will eject the box easier than trying to pinch it out. A bit the a batter compartment with the ribbon to help remove batteries.

So the ply has been there since last lockdown and you've just managed to squeeze it before this lockdown. Close timing. We had just started back at the same place as lockdown March 2020. Part way into a concrete post and panel Slatecrete fence.
100% right about that blade on the table saw Scott. You need a real fine blade to cut that veneer. Great work man, love the videos.

Hey Scott, love the videos! Also very nice looking drawers but I thought maybe as a small upgrade, if you made cutouts for systainer 3s locks, you could open them without needing to take them out of the drawers. Just an idea to think about. Best wishes, Jonas from Norway/Lithuania. :)

As a follow-up to this: Scott if you watch yourself opening the sys 3 in the drawer, the action of the lid actually lifts/levers the whole sustainer up. This will be putting strain on the hinge and will mean that the box can not be left open (for example while searching for a bit or something in the box) without you holding it, as the weight will automatically be pulling it down. Scott if you cut/rout down the side piece slightly this won't happen. Of course then you lose your auto-close mechanism, which you designed in deliberately. Right? 😜

Kinda makes the point of the systainers redundant doesn't it? Keeping all your tools in a small, easy to carry box saves you having to carry a bunch of loose tools back and forth to the van.
It would be convenient for when you only need one or two tools but how often does that really happen?
@@wearsjorge55 On a job suite yes, it would be stupid to be walking to the van and back, but having an option for when you're in need for one tool, like next to this garage, it might be nice to be able to pick just what you need. 😊 Not judging the build, just giving some ideas for added features 😊

I can’t recommend highly enough the Forrest Hi-A/T blade for incredibly clean cuts both top and bottom. They’re the only blades I use in my shop.

Homemade zero clearance insert plate will help clean up the underside cut on the table saw. Won’t beat a plunge saw though.
@Scott Brown carpentry, now you need a Foam cutter so you can use foam/insulationboard to make custom fits for your stuff.

If it was perforated with holes would that help reduce the weight without weakening the structure? Might also allow dust etc to filter to bottom which could fall into a tray. Wheels are a good idea. Loving the attention to quality detailing
Hi Scott, I like your ideas and builds are really inspirational and this drawer is great! As you said you can use a larger piece of pipe to store your recip saw, in the space left (from the side) you could use to store batteries, so you have them always at hand without opening a systainer, or if you really want to get funky, mount a charger over there, hook it up to your van electronic system (should find a charger on 12v 😎) and charge your batteries while you drive 😀. Keep going this way!

I have the same style drawer slides in my pick up truck. I built 3 drawer slides and with in 6 months 5 of the locking tabs have broken off. Be careful with those slides. They can handle the weight but the clips can’t.
Nice work. They sell the rabbet router bits for cutting rabbets/rebates along the edge of your workpiece. I know they have some sort of sled for the router so it will ride on your Makita track for cutting the dados.

Great drawers beautifully made .. problem here in London being a jobbing chippy .. you wouldn't be able to use drawers .. because you need the length of the van to access them . Parking is a major headache
I am almost done with my first apprenticeship in Germany. But since I watch your videos I am seriously considering doing something like carpentry or other building related afterwards as a second apprenticeship.

Fast cap makes some third hands that are very similar to the bessey clamps you used to install the drawer into your truck and for what I do they are prolly the most important tool I use. We mitigate water damaged cabinets without pulling the counter and something has to hold that granite up.
Scott I use a 80 or 100 tooth blade to cut plywood along with a zero clancere insert on the table saw.

Like many, when I first started out I was using a personal vehicle, which often meant having to pull half the stuff out to get to what I needed. This is better.
I use a piece of green tape over the area I’m cutting if it has a laminate/ veneer whatever. I haven’t had any chips come off on me yet.

Sorry for my english but, Your van fittout is noe off the best i have evner seen in a smal van i have the same system in my van but i have my dropp saw and my tavle saw om top of the fitout so i font brake my bak every time i lift it up

I made 2 drawers and the top slides in and out , all I used was furniture wax, my drawers weigh hundreds of pounds, pocket hole and screws with glue, all 3/4 plywood, when u have to get to the stuff in front u open back doors slide the top back and use side doors to get stuff out of the front of boxes, u have to have holes drilled in front because when u pull out drawers it needs to suck air to open easy, no need for metal drawer slides or bearings, wood on wood works amazing. My drawers are 19 high, I can open both drawers out pretty far and the sliding top holds them in, no need for a middle support.

I bought a track saw last year, had to wait 3 months for a 2.6m rail but my god. Worth it for cutting ply and mdf.
2:58 curious to know if you were to raise the jobsite table saw blade up so the button of kerf is at the top of thickness of material if you’d get better “cuts & less tear out/damage”. Just a thought, and how I was taught to use a table saw. Not sure if “correct”, but been doing it that way for years now 😉

Hey buddy it doesn't reduce tear out and damage, that method only increases the safety so that the blade isn't sticking out more than it needs to.
Clean cut is all about the blade type, get a blade that has more teeth (a finish blade). If you want you can reduce tear out with taping (mainly the bottom side) so the veneer is not ripping from the plywood.
@@connectedlocally1868 reduces the likelihood of kickback too
@@connectedlocally1868 It does marginally reduce spelching compared to a full height cut, with something like 12mm plywood if you set the blade so that the bottom of the gullet is at the top of the material the travel of the blade's teeth is about 45-degrees diagonally through the material whereas with the blade at its full height the angle is probably closer to 70-degrees downwards which naturally is going to cause a higher chance of spelching. The ways to reduce spelching would be to use a correct blade for the material you intend to cut, for a small site saw like the one Scott has you'd want something like a 60 tooth blade with a triple-chip-ground tooth geometry for cutting two-side laminate plywood which will give good results, you can also install a "zero-clearance" mouth insert to reduce the opening around the blade to where it's practically touching the teeth, which will give the laminate/veneer support right next to where its being cut much like how a track saw track rubber stops spelching by virtue of being right up against the blade preventing any fibres being pulled upwards.

Quite often these drawer runners are rated at the shortest length available.... so a 250kg rating is for say the 500mm runner then it drops as you go up in length. They don’t tell you this though
Looks good. Maybe 3.0 - not make the walls so high so you can open the 3's as it looks like the lid caught when you got the battery out. But love it. Looking at doing something similar with my van. Hope you and Jess are staying safe up there in Tāmaki Makaurau.

Did you have enough plywood material left to redo the other drawer. It is just a matter of time before that one fails. The OCD in me couldn't stand to have mismatched drawers.

Would you consider using construction adhesive instead of wood glue on the connections, along with fasteners, of course? Once cured, there is no way the connection would fail.

You say rebate, I say dado. Good idea whatever you call it. I'm surprised you didn't use a bearing on the shank of the router below your bit--that would give consistent dadoes. But I imagine what we see is the result of the tools at hand. Remarkable work nonetheless.
not good if you have lots of cuts but you can also run a strip of masking tape along the timber and then cut through, saved me a couple of times for those tricky one off jobs

Hey Scott - Love the videos!! What about using painters tape to reduce splintering with table saw cuts? Also, love to hear your thoughts on the Atlas 46 vests and aprons as a replacement for a tool belt?!
Good idea. I've considered vests but I run hot and would probably get too sweaty with all my gear on my body like that. I liked the look of the atlas stuff though, it seems to be well ventilated.
Not sure if it's possible but i would try to make the lower cabinets also slide towards yourself, got a feeling it would remove another hassle and you can leave the top off/loose. Cool guy !

Less Mass, Less Weight, More space, and easier to use. Just ordered 6 Drawers from the Flashing fabricator. 2 x rear long, and 4 x side Drawers. Easy.
