Last summer, I took a trip down to Mayfield and Paducah to record their monthly siren tests. Both test on the first Saturdays of the month; Mayfield at Noon and Paducah at one. I figured I'd nab a quick recording of one of their 2001s before heading to Paducah to film a Thunderbolt. You can find this particular siren on the north side of town by the 4-H fairgrounds.
As you may know, Mayfield got hit by a devastating tornado a few months back. Many homes and businesses were destroyed as a massive wedge tornado carved through town. Lives were lost and the city many never be the same. While Mayfield is still rebuilding, the community has grown stronger. There's some amazing stories of heroism from the night the tornado hit western Kentucky. If you have time, you should definitely check some of them out.
This siren, in conjunction with other notification methods, helped save lives that night. To my understanding, this 2001 is still there. However, two sirens did receive damage; a 2001 near a John Deere dealership and the famously high-mounted 3T22 downtown. Thanks to it's thick steel pole, the 3T22 actually survived a direct hit from the tornado without toppling over. However, according to the EMA, both still sustained damage and will need to be replaced. I really regret not filming that 3T22 last summer. Since it's so close to Paducah's system, I had some big plans for recording Mayfield's system...like recording several ambiences between various 2001s and the 3T22. As well as a drone video of the 3T22. But at least I got to see and hear what sounded like a successful siren test county-wide which I hope continued through the rest of the year.
Sirens in Graves County are tested on the first Saturday of the Month at 12 Noon. If you got the right frequency you can hear several "siren spotters" report test results to the EMA. Siren tests are cancelled on severe weather days, but will not be cancelled under overcast skies alone.

@@YourAverageMODude145 well, i would say the 3rd generations are about 126-128. The 2nd generation ones seem to be louder than 130s

What mic/mics do you use for your videos? They're amazing!
Zoom H1s mostly. They can be plugged into a camera or can be a standalone audio recorder. They're pretty cheap and you can get a lot of value from them. Plus they're stereo which is a must-have in siren recording. Are they the best mics? No. But they're not bad. I have three currently. One is usually set to manual which I like to use for recordings like this where you can really hear the difference when the siren is facing towards you.
I love this style of warning tone instead of the solid steady warning tone like on the ones in Warren Co Ky. This seems to get my attention quicker. ❤❤❤❤❤
Well, it's the tone used for attacks, which in this day and age would be nuclear. Just hope I never have to hear that tone not part of a test

Federal signal 2001s Kind of sound like fire trucks sometimes specially when it’s doing attack mode
This is exactly the same tone and speed they spin the chopper in chicago on these.

I got the tornado emergencies on KIH46 on my weather radios. Very scary night that i will never forget until it's my time to go. it's sad that the 3T22 will probably never work again but great recording on this siren.
Yeah I was chasing one of the supercells that night. Hearing that kind of EAS in the middle of December was wild! It was also just before the holidays too which was definitely heartbreaking when I heard all the damage that was happening. It was a long night...
That's the siren we have across the street. So loud!! Dang!
In the UK, we don't get all of the reports of tornadoes, so providing those details just added a whole extra level of meaning to this video for me. Such a shame that the 3T22 will have to be replaced but my god, it went out doing its job.

I’ve been wondering what’s been up with the sirens out there! By the way, how much of this area in the video got damaged?? Looks in better shape than others, but you never know. I see a bunch of bouncy equipment on the drone clip, lol.
