    Hi there,
I wasn't intending to imply that I got the blade sharp with only those last 3 passes of the tube.
    What I was showing was,
that a leather strop wasn't the last thing on the edge.
(The last 3 passes of the tube was merely to give the viewer a look at the tube in action, as a picture is a nice accoutrement to words).
I suppose I could have done a more detailed video about the time I spent sharpening with the tube, but my primary focus was to show how to make such a sharpener that I've found to work so well.

Why did you grind half the clamps off?

  • @AlanFriend-j8q
    @AlanFriend-j8q 9 днів тому

I have the Hapstone RS sharpener. I found it cannot sharpen longer knives because of the distance between the knife clamp and the base. I found that there is a clamp that is available from Hapstone the attaches to the body and yu can mount it to the edge of a counter or table which allows you to sharpen longer blades.
I'll need to try the ceramic rods like you show. It will help keep the waves out of the apex. It will also work on recurve blades.
    Thank you and God's Blessings

Hi there friend, thank you for sharing your thoughtful ideas with me. 🙂
So you find that the Hapstone RS knife clamp isn't high enough for long blades to fully rotate?
Here's a simple solution for your long blades if you don't want to spend more money on different gear...
      1. Unbolt the base from the support post and flip the base around, and bolt it back up where the long-end of the base is now pointing backwards.
      2. (You have two options here)
      A. Take a C-clamp and clamp it to the front corner of your desktop.
      Or,
      B. Drill a hole through the base and a corresponding hole through your desktop or cutting board so that the knife clamp hangs out over the edge of your desk and bolt it down (use a wing nut for easy removal).
      ~
With either method, you now have unlimited free space to flip extra long blades in the Hapstone RS.

You cant round those tube stones once they become flat again?

I'm not entirely clear on your question, but I'll answer you as best I can.
The ceramic tube hasn't gotten any flat spots, as I twist and turn it as I use it, I don't use just one spot on the stone.
In fact, because it rides concentric with the guide rod is its most appealing attribute.
It doesn't matter which way it's positioned, it always rides the knife edge the same.
      Does that answer your question?

I understand what your saying moving it around but on the video example you werent doing that and hypothetically the rod will end up like a hexagon form probably wont be visible with the naked eye but that will eventually happen no?

I don't know if that would happen eventually or not, but even if it were to happen, it wouldn't hurt anything. 🙂

It just means when you flip the knife your stone might not hit the right angle and get a mismatch bevel eventually.

No offense meant, but it could have been razor sharp before you even touched it with that ceramic rod. You need to do a cut test first to demonstrate that it is indeed dull.
