Hannah, you not only inspired me to do a so-far-successful No-Buy Year (6 full months and counting!), but I also donated half my wardrobe and have been "shopping" in my closet as I'm "shopping" my existing makeup collection to put together unique, stylish lewks. @@cassstephens9910 Great question! I went on vacation in late July and had already agreed to myself (haha) prior to starting my no buy that I could buy whatever I wanted while overseas…and boy, did I ever. The problem is, it was so difficult to get back into the mindset I had prior to vacation, and I backslid, and hard! I went a full 7.5 months being very strict, and now I find myself back in my 2022 mindset. I’m struggling to get back in the zone, to be honest. It really is so hard, once you allow yourself (again, prior to even starting) access to old habits.
I simply wanted to reinforce your advice not to limit oneself to a particular section of the thrift store, whether they be delineated by size or by gender. I have found many of my favourite button-downs in the men's section and feel so much more myself in a "men's cut" than in the button-downs I tend to find in the ladies' section. Truly a tip not to be overlooked!
@@janicevin4207 Yes! And a lot of higher quality women's basics end up in the men's section too I think because they don't scream feminine vibes; like rigid unadorned jeans or boxy Ts in darker colors.

I love the Madeline graphic!!! It’s exceptional. My girls love Madeline books. This topic is gold. I appreciate the diversity and variance of your example photos, thank you! I live in a place where most everyone looks the same 😑 and it can be suffocating to children’s worldview. I digress. I see so many options at the thrift shops for these current trends. Sometimes, they’re better! I have actually found a longer lingerie dress that looked really good for a daytime wear… and tops too. I look out more for them now and actually did find a navy silk top in pristine condition for $3!!! I think lingerie could get some actual use, incorporating it into daily wear. And if you’re not too comfortable, wearing it alone, put it under a blazer or cardigan.
I needed this. Even though I’m trying to get pregnant, I’m compulsively buying clothes! All the time! And I WORK FROM HOME! I’ve just been super depressed and grieving the loss of a loved one. Watching this having just given a classic red flannel to my brother, which I thrifted for my partner years ago, then they grew out of it and I wore it oversized for years, but then I wasn’t wearing it much so I gave it to my brother who loves it and it fits him perfectly. So this thing has gone across 3 different gender presentations, body shapes, and dress styles over the years and been loved the whole time. Just goes to show that flannels are always in fashion!
Awesome video though Vogue clearly has a different kind of summer than we have down here in the south 😢 Another cheap trick for asymmetry in a skirt is to pin it up in a spot of two with safety pins. I usually do this with the pin on the inside.

I have a long disgruntled relationship with summer dressing so I’m definitely challenged with feeling like I look good during the summer months. However, I did recently cut some old jeans that I loved into shorts that are in a perfect length for me, and that’s been a good start as the weather in my city is warming up.

So much inspiration! I highly recommend tucking one side of a skirt or dress (or use a hair tie on the underside), for a temporary asymmetrical hem. I picked up some Vans thrifting yesterday and can’t wait to play with the grunge and denim trends w them!
I want to give credit to you for the work you do to compile your inspiration photos because they are exactly that, inspiring! Thank you! What a gorgeous addition!
Every time I watch one of your fashion videos, the gorgeous representation of different body types warms my heart. Your content is such a welcome antidote! ❤
Also, I have found amazing slip skirts to wear on their own! Searching through men’s clothing, and all sizes is definitely a must went thrift shopping. Many of our beautiful vintage pieces out there run incredibly small for their size labels/just a different sizing system to now that could potentially be missed looking, and only one size. Some thing I thought of for the drape/goddess effect is to take a large silk scarf or any kind of scarf really, and to tie it Crossbody over a solid print dress. I have found this to be a nice way to play up a plain dress and wear it different ways as well as add a vibe for this trend!
This video has been yet another reminder that I am hitting the age where I am seeing trends come back around from my own life time. First it was the uggs and yoga pants (“flared leggings”) of the late 2000s when I was 11-13ish and trends first started mattering in my life, to the grunge flannel of the early 2010s and my high school years. It has been a really interesting time to reflect on!
watching this has also inspired me - seeing them back to back made me want combine the grunge with the lingerie inspired - a bra top with an flannel worn open just sounds so cute right now! and in general its fun to see how these trend in general can be combined
Your comment about making cargo pants makes me want to make a pair with all different fabric patch pockets. I may need to do that... combo trends! -- pretty girly bra with hard wearing cargo pants and a thin flannel? oooh that'd be cool.
Your hair is so beautiful and emblematic of your sense of style. It’s up there with Catherine Deneuve, Audrey Hepburn, and Jane Birkin in the hair hall of fame. 😊
Princess Diana was a trendsetter in fashion, and one of her signature looks was wearing nightgowns or slip dresses for a night out. She always looked so elegant and effortless, and I can see why that style has remained popular even today. It's incredible how much she influenced the fashion world and beyond.
*Flannel* . I'm 56, love a flannel shirt. I'm particular with my color palette and love to pair them with a graphic tee that has similar colors. This is a clothing piece I will reach for year round, a great layering piece for cool Summer evenings. *Denim Shirts* . Another "MUST HAVE" staple for me.
I love this fashion content - fashion is something I'm so interested in but I'm often intimidated by the perceived "entry fee" to so many trends (i.e. a new purchase) that I often ignore them entirely. Very helpful to cut through to more widely applicable trends that can often already be put together. I think I'll be giving extra consideration to the denim on denim trend myself!
This was very helpful . I am a thrifter but always get tempted by videos selling new. I also appreciate the variety of sizes in your photos. Nice job!❤😊
Yes, the way something moves can be a selling point for me.. I fondly remember an old dance teacher who used to go on about the impact of fabric movement and has stayed with me ❤🙂
The Madeline reference had me in the first minute❤ I can recite it on cue now due to how often I read it to my little one! Thank you for the fresh style ideas and the INCLUSIVITY! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Such good advice from you HLP! Thank you. It would be great to watch you thrift these trends or access from your existing wardrobe. And show us how to do it🥰
I truly found this channel just in time. I need to spend the summer wearing the bazillion clothes I already have to figure out what I actually like. I was on an unsatisfactory buying spree and still had nothing to wear. I went all of June on a no-buy (that doesn't sound like a lot, but it's HARD) and I can already feel myself becoming more thoughtful. I also figured out my "color season" recently, and I am a soft autumn, which is not at all the color palette I gravitate toward. I don't dislike the soft autumn color palette, I just haven't played with it. Phew.
Same here. I don't even look that impressive fashion-wise much of the time but have gone through an overbuying spree for some months. I got rid of some things and determined to not buy or get rid of stuff for a while until I learn all the combos and creative ways I can work with what I have (or just repeat a basic stand-by outfit I feel good in and move on).
I LOVE the "Canadian Tuxedo" look (blue denim jacket with blue denim jeans). I have four denim jackets I keep in rotation because they're both loaded with pins and brooches. Everything from Minnie Mouse in leather grungewear to the Rolling Stones' mouth and tongue logo. And ladylike pearls; beautifully made costume jewelry bees and butterflies, some designed by Joan Rivers and Jay Strongwater. And authentic vintage rhinestone brooches in mixed colors. And Christmas trees. And fuzzy poodles. And enameled pins from all the places I've been on roadtrips. And...
I LOVE these recreating trends with clothes you already own videos. Super inspiring to be creative with my wardrobe and wear things I already own and love in different and unexpected ways.
Although not thrifting you raise a great point in looking at the menswear section. I bought a cotton quarter zip yesterday for $30 less than in the women's department & it really was cut universally.
Flannel shirts are in? So many Canadians are suddenly trendy 😝 some friends of mine were “horrified” me and my husband didn’t own a flannel so they gifted us one each. I am planning to embroider mine but until then I will try to wear it tied like you showed here as it might make it feel more like me. 😅
Thank you for this wonderful video, Hannah! Sometimes you don't need new clothes, just new inspiration. I was on a no-buy this year and the change in brain chemistry made me feel a bit blah about my extensive existing wardrobe. But then I fell in love with the work of designer Haider Ackermann (check him out if the "dramatic goddess draping" portion of this video was your favorite) and the way he puts things together is making me look at my wardrobe in a whole new way. I feel like I've gained 100+ amazing clothes overnight and it is HEADY. Even though I'm tempted to shop for novel things because of the revived fashion lust, I'm going to be strict and shop my existing wardrobe. I think for many of us, we already have so, so many clothes, so videos like this which focus on creative DYI and repurposing, with thrifting considered over buying new, are a godsend. I love your work. The diversity in your examples was especially appreciated💖Thanks again.
I love the DIY suggestions you’ve made here, Hannah. I sew, but it’s been a while since I made anything. I so agree with you about the drapey goddess look being the easiest to recreate. Rayon jersey would be a lovely fabric for creating those fluid parts of the garment. If you ever feel inclined to make a video in which you demonstrate a DIY fashion idea, I’d be very interested. 😃
I think it would be so cool to watch your process of a DIY on a piece of clothing! I am not skilled in that department and I feel I would learn so much from you like I already have watching your videos. 🥰🥰🥰
I remember the lingerie as streetwear trend from the 90's and loved it! It was a bit anti-fashion and urban bohemian. One of my favourite pieces to wear at the time was a nylon cami with lace that had been tie-died magenta and off white. I found it for a very small price at a local market. I probably still have it somewhere. It doesn't have to look slutty especially when worn under an oversized jacket. The lace makes it fancy so if you wear a lace cami with plain pants or maxi skirt and then a slightly fancy coat or jacket, then it looks like it belongs. It's a fun feminine look and makes for a lovely décolletage.
I enjoy your videos because you're an interesting conversationalist (and I love beauty and clothing, too). Can you do a "make your own trends" video? Sort of like, how to get in that headspace of "this is cutting edge" but choose something completely unsanctioned that you love and imagine it in magazine spreads that then inspire you? ;)
I had no intention to shop but it’s good to know that I have all of these trends in my wardrobe 10 times over already (except for the asymmetric hem because I’ve never liked that on a skirt) 😅
Full transparency - I didn't know how I would feel about your fashion videos. I wasn't sure if I would be interested or that it would be relevant to me. Well, was I ever wrong. As someone who loves fashion, and has felt like she's been in a style rut for a while, your videos have given me an entirely new perspective on style, investment purchases, and now, capturing trends. I find your videos inspiring, instructional and a little therapeutic. You have very quickly become my favorite youtuber for beauty (new makeup, hot takes is always the best) and now fashion. Thank you for putting so much care and quality into your content.
Was literally about to throw out/donate my red plaid button down - half way through this I ran to put it back in my wardrobe! Haha thank you for saving me from some regret! Love your content
I have some slinky fabric kicking around that I was planning to make into a bias-cut skirt… this video (especially the goddess vibes part) might give me the kick to give it a go!
Thank you for the diversity in the models that you showed! I’m not an expert in DIY but I definitely have some of these trends in my closet. I might just copy the way you style you do a flannel shirt and a satin dress (lingerie-ish). 😘
I have always bought from thrift stores but now most of my buys are from thrift stores. The quality of fabric and construction is often much better than what is currently being produced and sold. There is a wider variety of cuts and styles and colours.
Thank you for this video. Struggling with buying all the things for summer, but just went through and pulled out my my bins with my summer pieces… and it’s already too much.
I am rewatching this video 4 months later, and I have to comment. First, come on, a flash of Ludwig Behelmans’ work. Be still my heart. Second, cargo pants. Enough said. And all the other trends to find in my closet or thrift shop. And DIY! To summarize, this is a great video!
my entire early adulthood is back in style. good god. I still have some choice pieces in my closet and I'm still about the same size. This is so kooky.
Trends as a "cultural aesthetic group project" is such a cool way to look at it - not that that eliminates the negative effects and the entire fast fashion cycle, of course, but it's a really neat way to look at trends, which otherwise often get such a negative rep.
Your process, insight and your sharing with the world is such a generous gift! Found your content at the perfect time and it’s helping me know myself and my love of beauty/style/clothes in ways that feel truly profound and practical. My heart and my bank account thank you! 🙏🧡
Hannah, would you ever do a video on the interminable search for the “perfect thing”? For example, I need a pair of leather sandals for summer and I’ve needed them for two summers at this point. I know what I want - black, low block heel, sling back, slightly strappy, able to be reheeled - but I can’t find it after searching high and low and I don’t want to buy something imperfect just to fill that hole in my wardrobe. How do you find the thing when you can’t find the thing?
@@janicevin4207 yes, this is what I've been doing, but the point of my comment is that when you're a discerning shopper it's often hard to find something that * actually * checks all the boxes. There are lots of sandals that LOOK like the thing I want but don't fit my foot / have bad reviews / aren't able to be re-heeled easily / etc., etc. I think Hannah is the perfect person to think about this because she's SO skilled at seeing through marketing to what something actually is (for example, in her New Makeup Hot Takes when she talks about talking herself out of buying something because it doesn't check all her boxes). However when you're very good at seeing why something won't work, and the market is flooded with cheap stuff (especially clothes / shoes), it's easy to talk yourself out of every purchase. Or it is for me.
As someone who doesn't care about fashion or clothes at all yet still watches all you video I have to say that I love the inclusivity of the photo inserts
Cargo pants were a thing in the 2000s. In my early 20s I had a light beige or off-white pair that I wore right out, and then in my later 20s and early 30s I had a pair of mid-brown cargo capris in a lighter fabric that I also wore right out. I don't know if it's a trend I'll participate in now, in my early 40s, but I don't a strong reaction to them coming back around like I did when acid wash jeans briefly came back a few years ago.
I found that the best way to find what i truely like to wear and find my own style is thrifting. I cannot stress enough how much joy it is to find a piece that excites me basic or a statment, as long that it is something i'll keep wear for the time to come. We are so heavly bombarded with trends and fashion that is designed to make as not being content with our wardrobes, i got of that wagon. I shop all around the stores at the mall and mainly at the thrift stores, women, men and children. I find jems every were, especially mens jeans and pants. The fashion industry has made as women so insecure with ourselves for the sake of money.
Yeah! No need to shop though it sure is fun to browse... black and white flannel shirts with a shorts bra or a cropped t look very now especially those black ripped cargo pants with a heavy sneaker. Draping? Sure ... And the lingerie ... Again so much fun to look and rethink that. Definitely 1990s Friends vibes! Love your content! 🍓🍓🍓🍓🍒You look Glowing!!! Stay safe. Thank you. j
Now that I am in my 50s I want to dress like either Meg Ryan or Judi Dench. 😂 Stylish, but loose and flowy. I've already been finding some nice linen pieces going towards that goal.
Military surplus stores are a great source for thrifting cargo pants. I have a pair issued in the Vietnam war that are still going strong....Lots of people remember flannel's moment in the 90s but it was huge in the early 80s as well, which is where it imprinted on me. In my mind, flannel has been continuously in style since then. And truthfully it has been frequently since World War Two, when boxy "masculine" flannel shirts were a huge style for women. They were called 49ers jackets and were usually made of wool rather than cotton flannel.
I love all these trends apart from the denim on denim, but that's just not something that looks great on me personally (It's cute on others) I love how 90s-2000s all of these are! I appreciate the diversity of images you chose for this video, and was fun seeing Gabrielle Arruda (a youtuber) appear in your images!
I know you just said there was no room for that in your life anymore but like, I would be very eyes emoji about a HLP thrift flip video if the urge continues

OMG I have a black jersey maxi skirt that I thrifted and have never worn. Can’t wait to try the asymmetric hem cutting idea on it! Thank you!
And show us how to do it🥰
Absolutely love how you put your videos together. Perfection. I find watching your videos very calming and smooth. ❤
Phew.
congrats on your June no-buy! the best way to re-set and take a deep breath!!!
Yes, discovering my "color season" was a game changer for me!
@@janicevin4207is it the colours or the style options that are hard on you?
Yet another great consumer conscious fashion video !! ❤ important to remember that in fashion what is old is new over and over again
And...
My favs are the asymmetrical and goddess, and I like that those can be combined.
I got my cargo pocketed pants already last year. Its the army green, belgian army deadstock from 1967 :-D
Good morning Hannah, love your content.
I would love a HLP thrift shop video. Maybe where you shop and show some outfit options.
The diversity in your examples was especially appreciated💖Thanks again.
absolutely love this video and concept~! thank you for helping me be both creative and frugal!
Sort of like, how to get in that headspace of "this is cutting edge" but choose something completely unsanctioned that you love and imagine it in magazine spreads that then inspire you? ;)
Lacy lingerie inspired camisoles and cargo pants were the look in the late 90s/early 00s. So cool seeing trends recycle this way!
Love the hair and look today! Makes you look very healthy !
I hope you do another video like this as we transition to fall/back to school!
im excited to get back into the baggy flannels of my youth haha but im also excited to try the grungy cargo pants and baggy distressed jeans!
I had no intention to shop but it’s good to know that I have
all of these trends in my wardrobe 10 times over already (except for the asymmetric hem because I’ve never liked that on a skirt) 😅
I enjoy Hannah’s thoughtful videos! If you too struggle with the slow speaking you can speed up her videos by going to the gear ⚙️ icon!
It's funny because I listen to podcasts and audiobooks at nearly 2x speed but I've never been tempted to do this with Hannah's videos!
Slow? I was just thinking how the editing sped everything up so much! But great tip nevertheless:)
once i forgot to do the 2x speed for 5 minutes and thought Hannah was depressed.... i am sillier than i thought....
So interesting! I don't find her speech slow at all!
Your fashion videos are so helpful and what brought me to your channel, thank you, pls make more ❤
9:38 ahhh good ol' Canadian Tuxedo ❤
Thank you for the diversity in the models that you showed! I’m not an expert in DIY but I definitely have some of these trends in my closet. I might just copy the way you style you do a flannel shirt and a satin dress (lingerie-ish). 😘
This is a fantastic video about how to actually go about the process of saving money by not spending it ❤
I have always bought from thrift stores but now most of my buys are from thrift stores.
And the representation in the images you use is 😘😘
Thank you, that is the kind of videos that should be wide-spread on UA-cam.
Your process, insight and your sharing with the world is such a generous gift! Found your content at the perfect time and it’s helping me know myself and my love of beauty/style/clothes in ways that feel truly profound and practical. My heart and my bank
account thank you! 🙏🧡
Amazing video Hannah! Great inspiration and food for thought. ❤
It might be that you'd need to get it custom made, while probably pricey you'd have the perfect thing in the long run
great video idea, I will think on it!
I need that sandal too
put your description directly in the google search: a ton of examples/brands show up
@@janicevin4207 yes, this is what I've been doing, but the point of my comment is that when you're a discerning shopper it's often hard to find something that * actually * checks all the boxes.
As someone who doesn't care about fashion or clothes at all yet still watches all you video I have to say that I love the inclusivity of the photo inserts
love this video, thank you, Hannah!! I love how simple and beautiful you are all the time :)
I just got cargo pants this weekend I remembered they looked good for my body type im glad they are on trend lol
Love this! Def helped to look at what I have in new ways!
Stay safe. Thank you. j
I've been to the thrift twice in last couple weeks. And also ebay!
I'm wearing today a plaid linen shirt. Cooler than flannel. Love the video
A very enjoyable and informative fashion video. Will definitely circle back a few times with this one. 😌
I love all these trends apart from the denim on denim, but that's just not something that looks great on me personally (It's cute on others)
I love how 90s-2000s all of these are! I appreciate the diversity of images you chose for this video, and was fun seeing Gabrielle Arruda (a youtuber) appear in your images!
Excellent advice, thank you! I would add that sometimes, in the thrift store lingerie section, you can find silk items for really cheap.
