I don't understand why people are saying that they aren't giving advice? Saying things like "her guitar wasn't completely tuned" implies that she needs to tune her guitar. Saying "She was pitchy throughout the whole thing" implies she needs to work on her pitch. I think they are doing a good job and they are choosing people who deserve to be in it.
While we're judging the persons *voice*, we are also trying to find the next big star on *UA-cam* - *UA-cam's Voice* - I felt like not being able to tune a guitar properly plus being slightly unpracticed counted against her performance, thus not making it into the next round. Remember, we had around 850 submissions and we are cutting this down to 24, which is only around 3% of the entries. She wasn't in the top 3%.
I love how when Ingrid says "no", she softens her voice, it makes the answer softer, and easier to bear, same goes for Luke and Joey, but Ingrid is just, well Ingrid :) And I'm glad she is in the jury, because I think she is one of the sweetest persons ever, so it eases the communication (in my opinion).
Ingrid, you did such a great job of being kind and considerate to the people that weren't the best. Way to go! It is evident that you are very sweet and have a good heart!
OMG!!!!!!! thanks SOOOO much joey!! i know my timing is bad and stuff but it was really hard to record stuff for me because my mom doesnt want me doing the youtube thing but i REALLY want this!!!
Everyone who is saying Luke is harsh, he is like a PROFESSIONAL UA-cam singer. He knows a lot about the talent so he knew if they had potential or not. He's not being harsh, only honest.
I thought it was about the content of their voice, not their looks, camera, quality etc. UA-camrs have it all and they don't consider that other people don't have everything they have. That's why they are competing the money may help them out for their UA-cam channel.
I totally respect how kind you guys are, even when it is clear that contestants are not all as talented as the others. You always find at least one nice thing to say, or at least be nice in your criticism. It wasn't NEARLY as critical as I would have been, but it was all very constructive and positive.
I heard that, too. Played it back. It sounds as if it was covered up with static. I'm was looking forward to watching this competition, but I'm afraid it's ruining the image of I have of them. Ingrid was the only one to remain tactful the whole time and also reminded them that this competition is to help those who don't already have great equipment and exposure have a better chance at success.
Ingrid brought up a good point, I think a lot of people (myself included) went into this contest just wanting to showcase their voices because in your initial announcement video, you said that you were only going to be really focusing on that aspect. I don't think instruments or camera set up should be held against (or help) anyone because those things are always temporary and can be changed, especially with a thousand dollars. However voice wise, you either have it or you don't.
Also, even though they were smiling before, I think what really got them going was the dog barking, hence the reference to the dog. Watch closely. They weren't exactly laughing at her voice.
Half of the people here are complaining that you guys are too harsh, then complain about how you aren't judging people's voices! I'm so sick of it; can't they see you're just trying to be nice? Next season don't bother so much at being nice, it obviously irritates people and they deserve harsh comments after all this. Love you guys!
Guys, if you are entering this you must be aware of the fact that you are judged, for good or bad! Luke has already said that he wanted to film their honest first reaction, and the people who entered was aware of that! And yes they did giggle a little, but have you watched idol or x factor? The judges there do it to when something or someone is funny! I know I hadn't been able to keep a straight face, and you probably couldn't either! I think you are doing a great job Luke, Ingrid and Joey! :)
Unlike a lot of people, I LOVE that they're being completely honest. If they weren't being honest, there would be no point in the show and if anything the followers would get pissed off because we would obviously be able to tell that they were lying. Don't act like you weren't thinking some of the things that they were saying. They're not being disrespectful, there giving both props and criticism when needed. GOSH.
You guys are not understand Luke's comments correctly. He didn't say there was anything wrong with freestyling or playing guitar, but when freestyling, you still *HAVE TO* stay in timing or rhythms are off and when there is background music, that would be off as well. As for guitars, if someone was going to use their guitar, they should know how to have it tuned, since they should have a good ear for music, as well as knowing the correct chords to play. Its part of being a musician. Calm down.
ingrid looks so classy in these video's. like she could actually be on x factor or something. and i love how she keeps her faced so composed and polite.
well, these are his subscribers he's laughing with. These people respect him and give him the opportunities he gets by subscribing to him and than he just makes fun of them

Luke was obviously just trying to lighten the situation when he talked about the dog barking and the girl being cute. I don't think that he was being unfair, he probably didn't want her feelings hurt when she watched it (thus not being overly critical on her singing capabilities, which really weren't all too good.)
Luke is right, he is supposed to tell people the problems with their singing so they can get better, so in my opinion he is doing what a judge should do
Guys, we need to remember where we are. I'm pretty sure the focus is on "UA-cam" not "Voice" here. That said, ask yourself if you'd watch any of these people on your own, it puts things in perspective and makes you realize why Luke's saying the things he is. He had an opportunity to get advice few people get as part of NextUp, I think he knows what he's talking about more than most of us do. :)
If you realize it, Luke will give 1000 dollars to the winner of this, and they are working hard at it. It's like whatever job, and I don't believe that the reason they're doing this is primarily money. Did you see Luke participate in King of the Web and donate it to charity? I'm quite sure he could have asked us to vote and would have won anyways without giving it to charity, but he did. And all submitters were warned that they would be judged, and I for one think they're actually being too nice

It was obvious Joey didn't want to be the deciding factor and it seemed like he didn't want to say yes (initially his comments were not in favor of her), but when he had to make a decision he hesitantly said ok.
I think it is okay for Luke to be more critical than the rest. He is more experienced with music than Ingrid & Joey and he can't say yes to everyone, especially since they only need 24 contestants. It also is a point of improvement for the contestants so they know what to do better in.

This is a competition and (like Idol, X-Factor, or The Voice) it's all about first impressions. Luke, Joey and Ingrid aren't being harsh at all.

Equipment isn't part of the competition! Out of all the people we let through so far, only 1 (Peter) had good equipment.

they don't need to be music professionals. Joey and Ingrid have ears and know what sounds good and what doesn't.
If I were you I would watch Luke's video on the difference between pitch correcting and auto tuning, I know it certainly opened my eyes.

Joey's face during the videos is so concentrated. he's like so focused and his face was super funny.
This is UA-cam'S voice so the set up and video skills do play a factor.

When the video lacks editing then it shows how good the voice is - they dont need special effects to make them sound good or stupid split screen
