Oreimo is one of the most underrated, and also rewatchable show in my opinion. After knowing the backstories of the characters, the perspectives really changed a lot and there are a lot of details and subtlety. It is the kind of show that is entertaining just for its humour, but it has another layer to it. One example is the achievement ideology undertone, with Kirino and Manmi being the embodiment of achievement and Ordinariness. Kyousuke is kind of like their battlefield in a sense. In the timeframe of the first episode, Kyousuke's mindset is much closer to Manami, we can tell it from how he react to Kirino waking up early to practice and staying late to study, also by how he stresses how ordinary he is. These are details we tend to miss because little did we know that it is the exact reason why Kirino despised Kyousuke, but it all come together when we find out that Kyousuke used to be a try hard and is the role model of Kirino. The main issue of the show is that it is not concise. My theory is that the story originally planned to end before Kirino went to America. She took out the box, unfold the backstories, and the show ended. However, the novel was getting too popular for it to end in a few volumes, so it digressed to become a harem story. We got to see more of the other characters, but it also diluted the focus from the main theme, which I can't tell if it is good or bad.
Everyone complaining about the ending didn't understand that Kirino was best girl from the get-go, there was never even a question. The beautiful end was inevitable all along. Oreimo is a master piece.
I just watch the show for the first time earlier this year and it really surprised me. The anime has really stuck with me. The ebbs and flows of Kyousuke and Kirino's relationship are amazing. I can't believe it never got dubbed but on the other hand I kinda get it. But it's 2022, now so....Why not?
the Author also wrote a few short stories besides the light novels. One of which is called "A Momentary Chance Encounter" which is a sort of after story. It's a much better ending. The Eromanga Sensei cameo is actually a reference to that short story, and is also referenced in the Eromanga Sensei Light Novels. Kirino also makes a small appearance in one of the latest Eromanga Sensei light novels but it hasn't been translated to English yet.
Eromanga Sensei Volume 11 has been translated to English now, so we actually have an even better understanding of Kirino and Kyousuke’s current relationship, it’s great news for Kirino fans. I won’t spoil it, but if you want to there’s a reddit post talking about it here. www.reddit.com/r/Oreimo/comments/j80dkc/postepilogue_kirino_information_from_eromanga_v11/
Oreimo 2 aired at the height of my seasonal anime watching back in high school, and it encouraged the most heated anime discussions my friend group ever had. The last couple episodes really threw us for a loop. It honestly kind of felt like they were rushing to have every girl confess just so Kyousuke could crush them all in one fell swoop. Like I never understood why they had Kanako confess to him while she was on stage in front of all of her fans. And then it turns out Manami's a psycho bitch and has been grooming Kyousuke all his life to become her husband or whatever. The ending was pretty unsatisfying at the time, but looking back on it it really does prove just how much Kyousuke cared about Kirino that he'd be willing to deny everyone's advances just do date her for a month and then break it off. He didn't have to shit on my girl Kuroneko so hard though. Anyway, I agree that what made Oreimo season 1 stand out was the show's effort to keep a sense of realism and its commentary on otaku and society, but season 2's appeal lies more in the wacky bullshit they put their characters through.
Exactly, well put. The wrap up of season 2 was its only flaw but, again, there were a couple of factors that were out of the studio / authors control that ultimately led to that ending.
Its like 4am for me but last time I saw this shownwas about 4 years ago but never got to properly finish it. T osts, and plot points are bringing back so many memories, this was such a great video!
I just finished it for the first time not even a week ago, and I know why it's so well-loved. . . It's actually so well, done. I, of course, cried. . . Great anime
Protecting your loved one is selfish but it's also altruistic because you are protecting something besides yourself :3 17:20 the scene of the protagonist crying made me cry too, seeing someone so strong break made me break just the same, beautiful Anime
Come to think of it, this was the anime were Ayana Taketatsu and Hana Kanazawa really took off their voice acting careers after their first major roles (K-on for Ayachi and Bakemonogatari for Hanakana respectively) This was also one of the earlier significant roles for both Saori Hayami and Satomi Satou. These seiyuus would eventually become some of the most beloved and best voice actresses of the next decade (2010s)
I have loved this series since I first watched it back in 2010-2011. I am also glad that the siblings ended up together and that their Otaku group are all still friends. The music's good, Osts, OPs, EDs, and character songs many of which are in my Top Played. The series has always given me soft warm fuzzy feelings back when I first watched it, and it still does except time has added nostalgia into the mix. Everything stated in this video is a reminder of why Oreimo is my favorite anime of all time.
I’ve rewatched this a bunch of times over the years including haganai. I share alot of the opinions you gave. The Opening is an anime classic at this point. It started for me as those “trashy shows” that I grew to love after each rewatch. Im curious if what you think about haganai because I feel like it’s similar to OreImo in a few ways. Ive played the first part of the game fansubbed. And I honestly like it more than the anime ending because it actually went through with the incest ending and didn’t pussy out by the end. I stumbled upon this video but you have earned a sub. Keep up the good work.
The if ending for Ayase is my personal ending. It’s unfortunate ayase never got a lot of screen time. But I felt she’d be the best fit for the main lead. There opposites that complement each other and that episode where they spend a month together is so heartwarming
Love this show and kinda get pissed when people just uselessly criticize the show. Feels great to see someone appreciate this great show. Loved it from the beginning and really like everything. The otaku theme, the OST, the ending. Obviously the ending is kinda controversial, but it's very good for a show that couldn't get the ending it wanted
I don't care what anyone thinks but when this show came out I fell in love with it. I was one of the few rooting for Kirino the whole way through so when the ending worked out the way it did I couldn't be happier. To this day it is still one of if not my favorite anime series. It is one of the earliest series that got me really into anime and anime collecting. Kirino really was that cute. As for the ending. During the monologue Kyousuke mentions that his and Kirino's relationship started with a secret, that being her hidden joy for Otaku culture. However, this also interprets that their new relationship is one that starts with a secret as well. Since the author couldn't put a full incest ending but wanted to I assume that Kirino and Kyousuke made the outward appearance that they broke up but in secret remain a couple. I mean they obviously both like each other in that way and they literally live under the same roof with plenty of time to be alone with one another. 100% they be banging lol.
Oreimo is really a well made show. I can't agree more on the art style, and Irony is superb. The story is great. Although some of their actions are questionable (like why Kyosuke's getting so many SSC while SAO is only a cameo here), it makes sense and intriguing to watch. And then the ending came, and I questioned my own sanity. To me, the only ending that makes sense for how the story has been going, is with Kuroneko, she had the most reasonable development. The others just feel forced, although i do like Ayase a lot. For anyone who likes Kuroneko ending, do check out My kouhai can't be this cute. It's my true ending.
Honestly this show just made me stan the amazing cast of talented voice actors who got paid to say the most hilarious shit and they totally embraced the show
Great video! It reminded me how much I love this series and made me watch and read it again. Here's my thoughts to it: I think the ending to Oreimo is often misunderstood and dismissed as stupid/bad because of the incestual implications of the kiss, which is of course a taboo. However, no work of art should be judged solely on the way society presently views a subject, as it will limit the beholder's views to those that are held by society. And while I don't want to defend incest in itself, as I believe it is inherently irresponsible due to the chance of genetic defects, I don't believe a loving relationship between siblings is always wrong. As with anything, it depends completely on the circumstances. In the case of Kirino and Kyousuke; In my eyes, their 'relationship' at the end of the series is not a romantic one in the common sense (i.e., where they both hope to start a family or become intimate), but a declaration of unconditional love for each other. Not a romantic or intimate love, but a complete acceptance and vow to always be there for each other. That they chose to symbolise this love through a mock wedding and kiss is, in my opinion, brilliant. For one, it showcases the absurdity of the situation and makes you realise it would never work in real life. The way they interact with each other also shows that they both realise and accept this, as they break it off right after. And secondly, it symbolises their now repaired relationship as siblings that was under strain due to feelings of jealousy and generally drifting apart. It is this aspect of Oreimo's story that appeals the most to me, as I experienced Kyousuke's perspective myself around the same age. Reconnecting with a sibling on a level I never thought would be possible... I cherish that bond deeply to this day. That is why I believe the series and its ending is, in fact, a masterpiece. On an IMPORTANT side note: Of course you can judge the ending to be bad if you were hoping for something else. Personally, I was rooting for Kuroneko to see her get back together with Kyousuke after he'd cleared up his feelings for Kirino. The scene of him cutting her off definitively was absolutely infuriating and heart wrenching for me to see. In the manga he actually promises her to come back after Kirino gives her approval (as Kuroneko broke up with him because she knew that Kirino harboured feelings for him) before he later stupidly proclaims he only loves Kirino. If he explained the situation and included her in it (which she would likely allow/want?), she would likely understand he'd need time to get over Kirino. Given the way they ended things, I think them getting together again (after a time) would make for a believable story. But then again, everyone has a different ideal view of the ending. That doesn't make the current ending and its takeaway any less valid for me.
It’s been over a whole year since I had watched/finished Oreimo. I really liked the characters, ost and especially the GODLIKE openings from Claris. I will admit that the later half of Season 2 caught me off guard, but honestly, the author should have went full incest route instead of backing out at the end which was kinda frustrating after all of the MANY hearts he broke. Tbh I wanted to see Kirino and Kyousuke get together to prove the childhood friend wrong, I really didn’t like her, but she was speaking facts about the dangerous outcome of the two’s relationship. Even though the ending was hit or miss, personally, it’s my top favorite guilty pleasure anime. The opening still plays in my head.
From some research I have done. Ruri breaks up with Kyosuke because she knew he was a siscon at heart. However the twist is (not sure how valid this part is) Ruri is Bi curious. Some evidence was presented for this "theory" however I don't have all the info. But the main link to this, is her picture she drew of her BEING in their lives, as let's say the third party. There was some other factors, but like I said I can't remember them at this current moment. I know this video is near one year old, but I'm curious to know, if you would take a look at the creation of hatred between Kyosuke, and Kirino, of what made them hate each other, and what was the cause. Cause believe it or not, Kyosuke became the way he is, because he was psychologically taken advantage of, and this led to everything we witness in the series.
If anyone comes back to this at all there exists a Doujinshi that depicts full contact between Kirino and Kyousuke as siblings. OreImo: Life Consultation after 10 years Have fun :)
I'm Brazilian and I know an old Portuguese author called Eça de Queiroz who is whell-known in my country by me and some intelectual people. That guy wrote a book called Os Maias (The Maias) in which incest between siblings is the main subject and is consummated. The interesting part is that work was published in 1888... Oreimo is a 21-century book who talks about incest too but doesn't let the taboo be the epilogue; it's a bit frustrating but I do accept its ending, even knowing I'd like to have watched the true one if it was possible...
I feel like this is the most honest say on the ending. At the time of release everyone was just stuck on "why did he choose his SiStEr?" When truthfully we all felt the same, "like wtf bruh, that's it?" But I do think it is a fine ending all the same. I didn't need an OVA where they where married being as I felt the show was all about unrequited loves, and how you are the biggest obstacle in the way of your happiness. I think it just would have felt off by having them stay together. They we're finally honest with themselves then moved on as better people, which is kinda every characters arch in this show. Yeah, I really liked it. It's in my 2010s top 10.
He is talking about Oreimo S1 being a great look at Otaku culture. But I would say it even represents the sibling dynamics really well. Often times, little siblings are seriously annoying for their older siblings like Kirino. And at the same time, little siblings do want their older siblings around however little they show it outwards. And like Kyousuke, older siblings often get fed up trying to be nice to their little brother/sister. The sibling relationship in Oreimo season 1 is actually genuinely well done. Season 2 messed everything up though 😭
Oreimo is the DBZ of imouto anime. In all honesty the show was really well made and it's timeless status speaks to the efforts put into the production. Anime fans more so these days, but even back in the day don't really appreciate good animation in all its forms. Rather people seem to only acknowledge flashier series without looking into things like character movements and expressions in dialogue scenes or simple touches like visual presentation of in universe content such as when a character is giving exposition or just randomly shows a fake anime/manga. Little things we take for granted.
14:46 That Ebata OP for Absolute Duo was legit. Honestly I think that anime has visually gotten worse since the early 2010s. Like the really good stuff has gotten better, but I feel the increase in quantity made staff spread thin across too many productions. Maybe it's just a difference of aesthetic tastes, but watching through a lot of these early 2010s shows versus more recent ones, I tend to prefer the aesthetic of the former. As far as Oreimo is concerned, I think it was a very interesting way to kick off 2010s otaku fan community anime, since I do enjoy following those kinds of narratives, being a huge otaku myself. I will say between Oreimo and Eromanga Sensei, Tsukasa Fushimi has kind of a knack for capturing the emotions of the fans and understanding its appeal. At the same time, I think his approach to the more industry focused portions always come off as a bit strange to me. Like with Kirino's unrealistic wishes for her anime adaptation all being fulfilled, or these accomplished light novel authors in Eromanga Sensei entering a contest intended for up and coming writers. I can't put my finger on it more specifically, but the approach seems to revolve around the characters in conflicts I think should actually be bigger than the characters themselves. Oreimo has this kind of game narrative approach to it with the branching pathways, multiple endings, etc. (most likely in reference to the galge element at play in the series) and I think similarly some of the other titles which came after it also have that element to it but in a different sense. Nakaimo having this sort of ultimatum where Shougo needs to find out who his sister is before he ends up falling in love with her, thus preventing a bad end. ImoCho focusing on Mitsuki trying to remove the belt by satisfying Hiyori's wishes, creating this almost game-like sense of progression (especially what with the stair motif felt ripped straight out of a video game for me). The media mix in general has a lot of game-like narratives, so I don't think Oreimo created this or anything of the sort, it was just an interesting observation I noticed thinking of some of the other shows you mentioned (I don't really consider OniAi to have much of a game element, for a counterexample).
I watched this anime series like 5 years ago. I also had the psp games with it. Actually there is one girl that the anime didn't mentioned. Her name was Aimi Sakurai, there is the reason why Kyousuke and Kirino had that siblings "cold war". I found out when I read the light novel.
As someone who is relatively ignorant of popular media, shows, movies, etc., I went into Oreimo almost entirely blind. I didn't even know the ending, despite watching it in 2022! I basically picked a bunch of anime that annoying twitter users hate and binged them, and they did not disappoint! The ending doesn't terribly bother me, but that's because I pretty much regard it as not cannon. It might as well have stopped right before that and never finished, as far as I'm concerned.
I was watching it when it first came out, there was no 2nd season for the time announced. I thought the season 1 ending of them just arguing but it being okay was realistic because it showed the bond of family will always be strong. And now as im older you got to know that if the show is titled my sister is so cute or something, you can't get shocked when it pushes for that. I got the gist of season 2 from your video and I would agree the ending with the sister does fit the most for the story it wants to tell. And their bond is really strong from what I can see. The point of writing fiction no, the ENTIRE point of writing a story is so you can have the ability to talk about subjects or themes in a more intense way and bring people with you on that journey. And its a damn shame his publisher didn't trust the author that sold probably hundreds of thousands of novels/mangas because of his story to end it on his terms.
Season 1 was a banger for me. Season 2 sucked ass. Irony is the greatest anime opening of all time. This show certainly had a huge impact on me. As an otaku atleast. This is truly a timeless classic
Thank you so much for informing me that the ending was made because of censorship. The author's intended ending would have made much more sense according to how the story developed.
the fact that he could just marry all of them together. Ayase, Kuroneko, Sayori and Kirino could continue beeing a secret among them. (im not counting the Loli which came out of nowhere).
I remember finishing season 1 and being all like "I don't know why people say this is so abysmal, I kinda like it". If only I had stopped there..........
Seriously, for the people who are mad about the ending...what did you expect? Did you read the title of the anime? There's no way my little sister can be this cute. The ending was written in stone from the very first episode.
was one of my first anime I watched, and I loved it. I still do. I guess I'm also one of the weird people who actually rooted for a kyouske x kirino ending, and I was so happy to see that happening (no, I'm not into incest). I had a feeling that might happen starting from the half of the first season. Still love that anime, so much.
I loved S1 of the show but S2 was a weird experience, let's just say. The show still looks very good and will compete even with today's stuff. I can't believe it's been 11 years since S1 of the show came out.
It's very easy to play the spin-off game, all you need is an Android device because idk if it works on ios. All you need to do is download the ppsspp emulator from Google play and then you download the iso file version of the game online and you can play on your phone for free!!
Part of the reason Oreimo's author wasn't allowed was because of Obscenity laws passed around the end of OreImo that outlawed any depiction of sexual activity between blood related family members. It was sad. Yosuga no Sora went full incest because it was allowed.
I watched it after eromanga sensei, and that brung me into a rabbit hole of which i cant (and don't want to) get out from. About the ending of it, there is an amazing theory by u/freexavier that basically glues all the minor hints that were given to us and basically fixes the garbage ending. TL;DR; the ending kiss implies that they'll continue in secrecy. The amount of irl siscon/brocons being broken by this one till this date is astonishing. It has became an extremely reliable way to know if one is or not our kind, and to what dimension said connery exist. Whilst moderate degenerates may take a couple of weeks to recover from it, true degenerates get broken up to months. Hell it took me 2 months to recover from it, and changed my life forever.
I’m kinda sad this won’t get an English dub, and there’s obvious reasons why it shouldn’t get one. But there are a lot of funny moments and great character speeches that could sound really good in English.
Ay!!! A new vid!! Also, can you do a video on the whole situation of pirated anime sites (mainly KissAnime) being banned? You don't have to if you don't want. I just wanted to hear your take on it.
The guy could be with any girl in the series... but somehow, the sister win.
Truly a timeless classic

I liked the show for the most part, but 10 years later, the ending is still a kick in the balls.
I kinda want to see the Author’s true incest ending btw
They did Kuroneko dirty. She clearly should've won hands down
no💖
@@voidvoid5151no, she’s special
the Author also wrote a few short stories besides the light novels.

Oreimo is my ultimate guilty pleasure, comfort anime. I watched it 3 times now and I just love it
This was really good and nicely edited. good job i still miss this anime lol
7:45 Ah yes my favorite and only episode of Oriemo I've watched. Very catchy song.
Its like 4am for me but last time I saw this shownwas about 4 years ago but never got to properly finish it. T osts, and plot points are bringing back so many memories, this was such a great video!
thanks for watching fam
This is a great review of the anime! Thanks for sharing your opinion!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I just finished it for the first time not even a week ago, and I know why it's so well-loved. . . It's actually so well, done. I, of course, cried. . . Great anime
Protecting your loved one is selfish but it's also altruistic because you are protecting something besides yourself :3
17:20 the scene of the protagonist crying made me cry too, seeing someone so strong break made me break just the same, beautiful Anime
i love oreimo and this video. great work
Idk why but the IGN intro for the "Music" segment cracked me up. lmao Great editing.
I recently watched this show, man it’s so good. I just personally wish it ended with him being with kuroneko, obviously best girl.
Come to think of it, this was the anime were Ayana Taketatsu and Hana Kanazawa really took off their voice acting careers after their first major roles (K-on for Ayachi and Bakemonogatari for Hanakana respectively)
This was also one of the earlier significant roles for both Saori Hayami and Satomi Satou.
These seiyuus would eventually become some of the most beloved and best voice actresses of the next decade (2010s)
And until now ayachi is still playing tsundere imoutos
I have loved this series since I first watched it back in 2010-2011. I am also glad that the siblings ended up together and that their Otaku group are all still friends. The music's good, Osts, OPs, EDs, and character songs many of which are in my Top Played. The series has always given me soft warm fuzzy feelings back when I first watched it, and it still does except time has added nostalgia into the mix.
Everything stated in this video is a reminder of why Oreimo is my favorite anime of all time.
Shout out to Dizzy Ziddy who has most if not all of the PSP content on his youtube channel, you can't play em; but you can read em.
I have a whole video on Haganai in 2018, check that out if you want to hear my thoughts on it!

Oreimo has a place in the heart of many otaku.
And Kirino has her own spot in mine.
This anime exudes classic that will go down for ages to come
Kirino best girl
The if ending for Ayase is my personal ending. It’s unfortunate ayase never got a lot of screen time. But I felt she’d be the best fit for the main lead. There opposites that complement each other and that episode where they spend a month together is so heartwarming
Always happy to see one of your videos in my sub box

Love this show and kinda get pissed when people just uselessly criticize the show. Feels great to see someone appreciate this great show. Loved it from the beginning and really like everything. The otaku theme, the OST, the ending. Obviously the ending is kinda controversial, but it's very good for a show that couldn't get the ending it wanted
idk how i managed to watch this years ago. i only now realize how fucking weird this story actually is
I don't care what anyone thinks but when this show came out I fell in love with it.
I really gotta read that Kuroneko if light novel
I was there on 4chan on the day the ending episode aired. It was pandemonium.
Honestly this show just made me stan the amazing cast of talented voice actors who got paid to say the most hilarious shit and they totally embraced the show
When ever I hear the op, I melt a little.
Ah nothing like the early 2000s.
Watching every single thing that came out and being able to sit through a full episode
I really loved this show every minute of it, even the ending :) I think and author should always be given the room to write his ideas
To love or to hate, Kirino is one of the best anime character for the character building. Kirino has been my #1 Waifu for 10 years and will always be.
You are a brave man admitting this here
+1 for waifu choice.
Great video! It reminded me how much I love this series and made me watch and read it again. Here's my thoughts to it:
I think the ending to Oreimo is often misunderstood and dismissed as stupid/bad because of the incestual implications of the kiss, which is of course a taboo.
On an IMPORTANT side note:
Of course you can judge the ending to be bad if you were hoping for something else.
18:01 Was the most beautiful moment in Anime history
No one will ever convince me that Oreimo was a bad show. Not with how much production value went into it.
OreImo: Life Consultation after 10 years
Have fun :)
I’m a huge fan of the show, and it’s so upsetting to not have the games translated. Yes there’s YT uploads but I want to play them
There is a short novel mentioning that the two of them is still together. Kuroneko mentioned that Kirino brags her relationship with Kyouske.
It certainly influenced the animes I watched after. Before oreimo I hadn't watched anything other than DBZ or Pokémon or whatever.
2:46 Sist A Sist, Final Sister IV, Imouto 2 (Sisterbound), Imouto Densetsu 2 (Sister of Mana)
Honestly still one of my very favorites!
Oreimo IS GREAT ANIME, I MEAN IT'S TRULY TIMELESS
Damn you Dengeki Bunko
The media mix in general has a lot of game-like narratives, so I don't think Oreimo created this or anything of the sort, it was just an interesting observation I noticed thinking of some of the other shows you mentioned (I don't really consider OniAi to have much of a game element, for a counterexample).
if no one had told me this show had insest i wodent have seen it
I watched this anime series like 5 years ago.
Kuroneko will forever be the best girl... 🥺

What the hell? I love kuroneko's little sisters trolling kuroneko's relationship. Thats epic snark.

the fact that he could just marry all of them together. Ayase, Kuroneko, Sayori and Kirino could continue beeing a secret among them. (im not counting the Loli which came out of nowhere).

was one of my first anime I watched, and I loved it.
