This is heart breaking - an amazing survey though! Kia kaha to the Piha and other affected communities.
Thanks for this - from the green house :)
Thank you for this
Great footage 😀 Very sad to see Piha in this state .
Dang, so sad to see my old home nearly wiped out, my heart goes out to those impacted, I know they're still awaiting some results
Exceptional footage and flying. Thank you
My heart goes out to the land and her people of Piha. Sobering seeing homes I have lived in under water. Aroha nui to everyone.
Sorry to see the scale of destruction. Hope all gets better soon.
Great video and a public service!
However, rules on flying drones in NZ seems so restrictive from over the ditch that I planned to leave my drone behind for my next visit.
I don't think anyone would give a sh#t here as clearly the intent was a legitimate documentation of damage.
Mind you mitigating against risk of privacy, helicopter, aircraft loss may be an imperative in some situations.
Grew up ditching high school (EGGS) and bailing to Piha for a days surfing back in the 1970’s.. like most Aucklanders so many memories, parties and BBQS out there watching it grow and get yuppied out.. this is so sad.. to see Lion Rock wrecked feels like the end of an era..
Such a sad sight 😢
Beautiful area, not unlike whereni live on south island west coast. Same layout, big hills, the beach, cliffs and river. Welp, i guess its food for thought.... Be prepared.
Very good
Not an unexpected amount of damage for a high rainfall event. With the images Ive seen, over the past week, i thought it would be worse than the video showed. If we build in areas of high risk, expect a surprise or two. Thats why we have insurance. Our hills are constantly trying to achieve an angle of repose.
But Piha is on the west coast, outside Auckland. Was this due to the devastating flooding in Auckland prior to the cyclone which hit the east side of N Island?
Correct. West coast. Piha escaped the worst of the Auckland anniversary weekend flooding. It got rain but nothing like Auckland city. However the cyclone hit 6days later. So wet ground multiplied the effects of the cyclones. Piha got 360mm of rain in about 10 hours on already soaked hills, during the cyclone.
Great video. And very heart rending. Feeling very strongly for people of Piha. But sorry to say that that uplifting happy soundtrack is so wrong for it.
well its just nature doing what she needs to do such an un stop able force of power makes us look like idiots
I hope you got permission from every single house your drone flew over before posting this. As far as I'm aware it's illegal to video people and their private property and at the very least a total invasion of privacy.
Thanks for your feedback. I am definitely not in the habit of flying over people’s property and invading privacy! I acknowledge there may be some property that features in this footage that permission wasn’t given. If anyone is concerned, I am happy to take it down, but overall this video raised awareness and helped greatly to raise funds to help the community. There is zero $ gain to me. I have been in involved in the Piha community for over 40years and know a lot of people. The flight was to check out personal and friends property for those who could not be there, and also property with access cut off due to flooding. Any close ups and most mid shots were those properties, so yes, did have consent. These were exceptional circumstances and your feedback is the first comment raising this concern. But I do 100% agree with you re concerns around invasion of privacy. I do think there is a difference flying at altitude at 30-50km/h vs hovering low outside someone’s window, which unfortunately does happen often.
Thank you. From a Piha local ❤
