Nice to see you here Perun! Really loved your most recent video too, although I had hoped you might mention the 2 billion euros worth of EU procurement effort for ammunition for Ukraine that the EU council recently passed, and not just ASAP. Perhaps you can mention it another time! Hope your schedule isn't too overwhelming to play some AoW4
You should keep making AoW4 videos! I sat through this entire video because of your sheer enthusiasm for the game, and now I'm thinking about getting it too.
I watched about 2 minutes and i already know that i ll get this game asap You showed me so many good games mr. Potato, great thanks for all of them 4x game with magic is just what i wanted from life at all
I often speed youtube videos up by 1.5x when I watch them. I find it saves me a little time with no loss of comprehension. I do not do this with potato videos.
Wow. A LOT of thought went into the game design. This isn't merely a reshuffling of known game mechanics, or flailing in random directions. These guys clearly took a serious look at past games and refined subpar mechanics. The major/minor war justifications and rivalry system in particular caught my eye. Someone on that team must have really hated getting diplomatic penalties for dealing with passive aggressive neighbors.
All other videos have just been scratching the surface of the tactics this game encourages you to employ. Yours just goes all in and makes it work, which them makes it actually understandable by the rest of us. Thank you, and I'm looking forward to more crazy builds and brutal tactics.
This did not feel like an hour long video. I'm really looking forward to this game! Thank you for your content! Also really interested in seeing where this Mystic Empire goes.
I'm a huge fan of Master of Magic (it is one of my favourite videogames of all time), and this one feels like a super-rework and keeping pace with the times. It seems to have similar mechanics to Civ 6 which are good (neutral cities, cities developing tile by tile and not horizontally) and much more (uplifting other factions and your own faction), super-tactical and strategic combat... It is HUGE.
I am super excited to see more of this game and I love the lets play format where you are taking time to explain the game and your decisions. The live streams were fun, but I'm learning a lot more from this which I appreciate.
Don’t worry about it Potato! Honestly watching you play any game is fun! I use people I’m subbed to on UA-cam to branch out into new video games. I’ll probably try this game when it releases
Appreciate both the effort and risk taken for such an information-rich style of presentation here - absolutely for me your delivery is the best way I can remember being introduced to a game like this one and if the channel stays like this for a while it'll keep me engaged - I wouldn't have bothered with yet another 4x title otherwise - thanks!
Whenever Potato review a game I’m like “um but what about when potato is super knowledgeable in the game like he would be with civ after so many hours” glad this game is getting the potato brain dissection
You sold me on getting this game once you said it is like a modern Master of Magic game. That was a huge part of my childhood and I am always on the lookout for a game like it.
I just read an article about this game last night and thought I wish there was a play through I could see before buying. I am loving this! It like a combination of Civ and D&D, my two favorite things to play. Would love to see more of this content.
I love how you explained every single thing. The game seems very complicated at first with bonuses and options everywhere, but you made it very digestable for a new viewer. So far, I like this game more than Civ6, maybe it's just because it's new, but fantasy settings talk to me more than just historical.
I had to check the playback speed every 5 mins, its was the kind of level of excitement and conversational boost observed with folk returning from the bathroom having "powdered their noses".... That good, huh? :)
NGL these game companies need to start paying you. I got hooked on Humankind (i know everyone hates it) and Civ 6 because of your videos. AoW4 looks INSANE. And this video has me pre-ordering it. I'm more of a roguelite player and really big on ARPG looters like Path of Exile. I preordered D4 as well so maybe I can get this game out of my system before then.
Wow. Haven't even gotten super deep into the game yet and im hooked. I played a lot of aow2 when I was younger, never played 3. But I saw Paradox picked it up and I knew it would fire. Your video confirms it.
Fantastic video! I tried my first game and was kinda lost with how many different mechanics there are to learn, your explanations filled in a TON of questions I had and gaps I didn't even know I was missing!
I've watched 30 minutes so far and I'm loving this. On top of that this game is really complex. When I start thinking about how I want to play a game then I know I really want it.
Fun episode, love the depth of this game. The build definitely seems super strong, especially starting off fist and being able to double cast and weaken
Im so hyped you made this video! Ive been watching all your livestreams lately and wanted a more in-depth explanation of this game i9m definitely getting it!

Honestly man i enjoy watching you play many games , not just civ , i think is the way you play it and talk that i find it relaxing and entertaining to watch
This is my favorite thing to ever happen. I got a little worried when you were so reserved with your comments in the sponsored video - I have been so hyped for this game & I was gonna be super disappointed if it didn't live up to your standards. It showed up on my radar out of nowhere due to watching so many Civ videos recently, and now I have watched every single dev livestream and tutorial possible. I even tried playing AOW3, but it's not nearly as awesome as AOW4 looks. Definitely gonna grab this when I can afford it!
Potato, I found you while looking for Civ tips and tricks, staying for the real talk and rambling, leaving with more steam games in the steam library that I'd have never found out about if you didn't play em. I'm here for your passion in games.
As per your orders... Iiii mean Request. I did pick this up. I don't play 4x games at all, but this looked like a good intro point. I made an easy map, with easy opponents and created an army of Paladin Rats that were master architects. I had planned to win by allying myself with everyone and expanding... however that fell through when one of my opponents decided that they didn't like rats. So we rose up along with the other faction, the dwarves, and combined our power to slay the racist elves. I didn't expect that to end the game immediately since my enemy was gone, and I was completely allied with the dwarves at that point! What a delightful game this is, thank you.
Just bought this game and I can see why it took over your gaming life. There are just so many satisfying, well-designed and implemented mechanics at play here, as well as some great visuals and attention to detail. It's one of the very few games I've played during my game-playing time on this planet that instills that "Just one more hour of play, then I'll bathe and eat" life decisions. The dev team have done a great job with this latest AoE iteration.
A tip for grinding Pantheon points: 1v1, Close positons, custom realm with no oceans and no free cities. Use your units to find the other ruler. Soon as you do, declare war, then become a vassal to end the war. Counts as a victory for you and only takes 2-5 turns. Grants you a full level everytime.
Regarding resistances, I love that there is no hard cap, but instead a series of diminished increments by design. Because there is a natural stopping point when the apparently linear costs situationally outweigh the gains. As a game dev, I naturally had to rev-engineer the resistance formula: It's as simple as 1-0.9^resistance I.e. R1 yields 10%, R4 34.39%, R7 52.17% A more general approach, where you want to hit a value of X after N levels of resistance would be 1-( (1-X)^(1/N) )^R For example, to hit a value of 30% after 3 levels of resistance R0 = 0% R1 = 11.2% R2 = 21.16% R3 = 30% R4 = 37.84% R5 = 44.81% R6 = 51% Pretty neat.
As soon as you said “it is what a modern Masters of Magic game should be” you had my attention and based on this vid, absolutely spot on! Can’t wait until I have the opportunity to enjoy it myself!
Leader: @PotatoMcWhiskey Trait: Entertaining All enemy Units of the field become Viewers. Each turn, Viewers move 1 tile towards the closest Trap type Spell casted by the leader. Signature Spell: Video [AoE, Trap] Viewers lose Action Points based on the Watch Time. Causes Distraction. Upon critical hit, the trait Viewer is added permanently. Distraction When stepping on Video, Viewer loses 60% Focus. If remaining Focus is below 30%, triggers Time Steal. (Ignores Defence) Time Steal Maximum Watch Time (length of Video) is automatically applied. If affected Viewer has the trait Busy, Viewer gains Procrastination.
The explanation of unit health affecting unit damage just instantly makes me think of D&D Swarm mechanics, and that's all I need to know to want this game.
I picked this game up yesterday, quickly did one of the intro worlds and didn't learn much. Immediately made my own faction and jumped into a huge map with max AI just so I can learn and I still think I learned more in this 1 hour video than I did played 3 hours yesterday
Just picked this up, very glad you have a series and two guides on it so far. I watched your Civ 6 videos back when I played that and so I wondered if maybe you were into AOW4 or not. Glad to see you are!
Hi Potato, back then I stopped playing AOW3, because there was one very successful strategy: 1. Don't do diplomacy (here with whispering orbs and such), but just capture all cities immediately by force. You always say that you are a fan of lump sum or immediate bonuses (more important in earlier turns), yet you explain how you intend to grind allegiance in astral anchorage, 6 turns to pact of cooperation, then more turns, then more turns. How many turns will this need? 25 - 35? If you attack and capture you get all the cities production in 5 turns. Just saying that, let's say you meet 3 cities and do 30 turns diplomacy, e.g. total annexation in maybe 45 turns vs. attack and conquer doable in maybe 15 turns. Which one produces the bigger snowball? 2. Gold was the single most valuable resource in AOW3. If you manage to generate it well , you win. Is it the same?
I foresee a disturbed sleeping schedule in the near future. 31:20 100% agree. I would love a system that gave your units promotions not only that you could choose, but also based on what they did/achieved. If a unit did something really impressive in one battle (like idk defend against 10+ attacks without dying) they should get a special name and bonus to what they did (in the given example hat would be some kind of defensive bonus). You could end up with armies full veteran marines, or experienced mage-killers, etc. That could be super flavorful. Maybe even add some small visual changes: that battalion carrying their banner into battle or showing off their valor with bright feathered helmets etc.
Having played the other age of wonder games, seeing your video just reignited those fond memories of the other games. I always wished my friends would play AoW3 with me. Can't wait for game 4 after seeing those old mechanics back.
New sub here. I just randomly came across your channel. UA-cam algorithm gods did its wonder lol. You have calm voice. And the way you explain, like a teacher, but video games haha. I look forward to watching more of your old and new content. 👍
is anyone else extremely happy Age of Wonders got 'revived' in the past few years? like i remember the original series was like an underrated counterpart to HoMM 3 which was wildly popular and then AoW3 came and now with AoW4 i can see the series is in good hands. need to load up this bad boy
I am absolutely down for more of this content. Gotta pick the game up too, right up my alley lol. It's actually kind of refreshing to get away from civ tbh, it was getting a tad bit stale and this one has way more complexity. Would love to see the unit upgrade system get overhauled like you had talked about, would be super interesting. Mods will do it if they don't lol.
Not going to lie... I don't think I've ever played a game like this.... the closest I can even remotely compare it to might be starcraft and that was at least 20 years ago. Watching this really makes me want to try when this comes out in a few days lol
Some skill tree for units and like every third node to be an "evolution", something like disciples but with skills in between. edit: game looks great, even tho pdx can be greedy, they are still the best at this customize stuff, creating your own races, champs, kingdoms and all that. this is like stelaris 2 in medieval fantasy world
I think the vast majority of us would be just fine if you became an AoW4 channel for the time being. Its a blast to watch all the different builds, and tbh youve kinda covered everything in civ 6 at this point.

As a game dev, I naturally had to rev-engineer the resistance formula:
It's as simple as 1-0.9^resistance
I.e. R1 yields 10%, R4 34.39%, R7 52.17%
A more general approach, where you want to hit a value of X after N levels of resistance would be
1-( (1-X)^(1/N) )^R
For example, to hit a value of 30% after 3 levels of resistance
R0 = 0%
R1 = 11.2%
R2 = 21.16%
R3 = 30%
R4 = 37.84%
R5 = 44.81%
R6 = 51%
Pretty neat.
Potato talking about 90% of the game mechanics at the start: It's a surprise tool that will help us later
love the vid
Masters of Magic! Lots of great memories of that game. This game looks pretty cool, thx for the video
1:03:13 Note that selecting the quarry automatically gave a refund to the blacksmith in construction.
Nice to see a 4x game where you can war early without feeling like you just hurt yourself with some niche build
As soon as you said “it is what a modern Masters of Magic game should be” you had my attention and based on this vid, absolutely spot on!
Can’t wait until I have the opportunity to enjoy it myself!
Leader: @PotatoMcWhiskey
Trait: Entertaining All enemy Units of the field become Viewers.
(Ignores Defence)
Time Steal Maximum Watch Time (length of Video) is automatically applied. If affected Viewer has the trait Busy, Viewer gains Procrastination.
I was on the fence on this game; thank you for your detailed explanation. Super excited to get sucked in. Subbed.
These people nailed the game, they deserve big applause. Potato too, i am so happy when people do their job right!
I'm so excited to hear that you are excited about this game!!!!! Can't wait to play it
The explanation of unit health affecting unit damage just instantly makes me think of D&D Swarm mechanics, and that's all I need to know to want this game.
I picked this game up yesterday, quickly did one of the intro worlds and didn't learn much. Immediately made my own faction and jumped into a huge map with max AI just so I can learn and I still think I learned more in this 1 hour video than I did played 3 hours yesterday
Even without your recommendations I was going to pick up this game. Except now I know it’s going to be great
We are a full time AoW4 channel now, and I am fully behind it
I'm sold. Totally bought the game based off this review/tutorial. Thanks, Potato
amazing short insight into a potentially awesome game. looking forward to see more, love when you`re passionate :)
This game looks absolutely amazing for a civ channel to start covering and explaining! Keep the content coming!
Your mention of customizing unit advancement immediately brings to mind the "Fallen Enchantress"
I am so hyped for this game, it is a relief to know that Potato is loving it.
This is now a AoW4 channel as I need you to feed my addiction until I return home in a couple months to play it myself lol
looking SO much forward to watching you play on 🙂 btw: love your explanations!
Awesome!!! So hyped because of your content.
Wow! " What a modern master of magic game should be."
I will go and get this then. Thanks for delivering such high praise of it.
Already picked up the premium edition a few days ago. I'm glad I have confirmation that it was a good idea. 😂
We're here for you Potato not just CIV. Play what you enjoy :D
Having played the other age of wonder games, seeing your video just reignited those fond memories of the other games. I always wished my friends would play AoW3 with me. Can't wait for game 4 after seeing those old mechanics back.
Really great walkthrough of the early game. I’m new to 4X games so it was helpful to hear you talk about your decision-making process.
New sub here. I just randomly came across your channel. UA-cam algorithm gods did its wonder lol. You have calm voice. And the way you explain, like a teacher, but video games haha. I look forward to watching more of your old and new content. 👍
Nah it made your channel more interesting. You've kinda covered most of the Civ content right now
is anyone else extremely happy Age of Wonders got 'revived' in the past few years? like i remember the original series was like an underrated counterpart to HoMM 3 which was wildly popular and then AoW3 came and now with AoW4 i can see the series is in good hands. need to load up this bad boy
Awesome video, I really appreciate how well you explain the game. It's a great way to demonstrate the mechanical richness.
Well, I hadn't planned on buying it but this gameplay and your break down was so good, I just pre-ordered it. Game looks amazing.
This game so far 30min in reminds me a lot of Heroes of Might and Magic!
With that being said, I am sold!
I would love Age of Wonders 4 Let's Plays and Tutorials please!
I think I speak for most of us when I say we need more of this pls❤ complete series asap
Can't wait for an AoW4 Overexplained. Just bought the game today and even the stuff you explained here has been helpful!
Some skill tree for units and like every third node to be an "evolution", something like disciples but with skills in between.
edit: game looks great, even tho pdx can be greedy, they are still the best at this customize stuff, creating your own races, champs, kingdoms and all that.
this is like stelaris 2 in medieval fantasy world
Oh my. I feel my love of fantasy and Civ style empire building as I watch this video. I’m going to be addicted to this in no time I bet.
Watching Potato describe the rules, of the game feels like he’s talking about the Cones of Dunshire from Parks and Rec
very well explained, you are talented in presenting stuff, good work, thx for your work
