  • Today you will learn more about the connection between hypothyroidism and carpal tunnel syndrome.
And if you are someone who has carpal tunnel syndrome then you will definitely want to check your thyroid because thyroid dysfunction is a potentially reversible cause of this condition.
Carpal tunnel syndrome (referred to as CTS) is the most common nerve entrapment syndrome in the body and is something that up to 20% of thyroid patients suffer from.
As an incredibly debilitating condition, it leads to discomfort, pain, and, if severe, insomnia thereby impacting many other systems in the body.
Hypothyroid patients end up with CTS for 2 reasons:
    1. Because of the buildup of mucopolysaccharides in the wrist (which draw in water and result in edema).
And 2. Due to weight gain which is the direct result of decreased thyroid function.
The good news is that there are many ways to eliminate the symptoms associated with CTS but many of them may not be on the radar of your doctor.
    Here's what works:
    1. Optimize thyroid function.
    2. Improve flexibility, mobility, and posture.
    3. Open up the tissues where impingement can occur.
    4. Prevent repetitive strain/stress injury & evaluate ergonomics.

Hyperthyroidism patients suffer with carpal tunnel as well, that is how I ended up getting an emergency endocrinologist appointment. The wait was 6 months, went to urgent care due to carpal tunnel and the physician ran my thyroid numbers and immediately called an endocrinologist to get me an appointment asap! I went from waiting 6 months to having an appointment within 5 days!!

I just had surgery on Tuesday on my right hand for this and it was caused by hypothyroidism. My left hand was in November. I've had thyroid issues since I was 15. I'm now in my 40s.

Thank you for explaining the connection between Hypothyroidism and CTS, you’ve validated my experience with both. After much time on multiple non-surgical CTS treatments (as you explained), I did choose band release surgery for both wrists. The comment I’d like to add is that I wish I’d chosen surgery sooner, the improvement was immediate and the pain is gone. I appreciate your work on this subject so very much, thank you!

This has nothing to do with your video, but just a recommendation to please start a playlist for pregnant moms with hypothyroidism because we need your help too! Suffering a lot and worried about my baby’s development. Thank you 🙏🏻

I remember years ago when I went to the doctor with extreme tiredness. That morning, i couldn't barely get out of the bed. First check was my thyroid, it was high. Next time I had the tingling after a series of test, came positive for CTS. Doctor recommended surgery. Wasn't ready. After one year, i went running to the doctor and said that he do it there and then😢😂. I couldn't continue. I was miserable. Then a few years later, I lost a pregnancy(no heartbeat), first test, the protein and thyroid levels, the latter was bad. I resisted medication for the longest time. Have been on levothyroxine for 5 years. Wish I had a lot of this information.

Should I try LDN if my thyroid and tonsils are chronically swollen and painful ? Been to Specialist. TFT's normal. Thyroid swollen. Have elevated thyroid AB's . So over this. My immune system will not calm down by itself, been months like this with nothing but 'take pain relief'. Also tapering off Benzo's . Can I take LDN while tapering off Benzo's or using Benzos ? TY

Holy crap so glad I found this guy, I have every single symptom (carpal tunnel, body aches, eyelid and leg edema, constipation, digestive issues, depression, fatige, brain fog etc) I think it was triggered massively by stopping vaping (nicotine) but I realised I've had this intermittently through the years but whenever it was bad and went to doctors they told me I was depressed and gave me some crap "mental health counselling" pamphlets for therapies which I couldn't afford anyway. I also had a standard thyroid test at some point but was told it came out normal... I find it very hard to not be very restrictive with calories bc it helps with the bloating but I'm gonna try all his advice but unfortunately can't afford the tests right now.

Hey Doc, I had my thyroid radiated in 04' and I've had in range labs 3x in 20yrs. I started asking my doc about T3 and T2 and I got, I don't like use them. Im on disability and Medicare so I'm trying to find a Doc that sees the whole picture like you. Ive looked. How do I go about finding one that would actually work with me, instead of this is the only way stuff? I live in Indianapolis and there should be plenty around, but.. I know that you're a busy man, but any ideas would be appreciated, thanks!
