MXR® Dookie Drive™ Pedal (Pt. 1)

- Billie Joe Armstrong’s guitar tone on Green Day’s groundbreaking album Dookie sounded dirty and punchy with the perfect amount of articulation to express the musicality of his fast, melodic riffs. He got that sound by running his signal through two heavily modified amplifiers-one scooped with a ton of gain and the other with a well-defined midrange. When it came time to mix the record, the band blended the two signals together in different ratios to match the vibe of each track.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Dookie, we’re releasing the MXR Dookie Drive. It captures the sound of both of Billie Joe’s amps in a single pedal so that you can dial in your own variations of that famous Dookie sound. We borrowed the amps themselves so that the MXR team could carefully analyze all the sonic qualities that make them sound so darn good. After much analysis and A/B testing, our engineers rebuilt the amps from scratch in pedal circuit form and fit them into a single housing. The High Gain and Clean Gain sections each have their own controls, while the Blend control allows you to mix them together just like Green Day did in the studio. If you want some extra scoop in the midrange of the overall output signal, just hit the Scoop switch.
The Dookie Drive isn’t just for Green Day fans-this totally unique pedal provides a full harmonic range of overdriven tones for a playing experience that is full of depth and dimension.

@@miseryparty3726 Okay...but learn to take a joke
HailOlympos! what you said isn’t even a joke, it’s just s dumb statement
@@miseryparty3726 That's your opinion, pal. I'm a huge Green Day fan, don't get so butthurt
“It’s that Dookie sound.” Lol
Sounds like smashing pumpkins fuzz nothing like dookie
Insomniac - most underrated GD record. Some of the best lyrics Billie ever wrote are on that album imo.
Nah Smooth was definitely his best writing and extremely underrated
My fav of them so far
nimrod is super underrated imo
@@heyitsharryunderrated? Lol, no.
@@thadenmartin4713 everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I don't think you can dispute that Billie Joe grew immensely as a songwriter from that first record. There are some really goofy lyric and melody choices on 39/Smooth. Go back and listen to "I Was There" and tell me that's on par with anything on Dookie or Insomniac. There are some great songs on that first record, but calling it Billie Joe's best writing is wild.
Blue is just sitting there like “yeah so are you gonna play me or should I just leave?”
Blue is the dookie sound. It would be cheating to use it
Billy is looking healthy.

Stab you in the heart.
I fucking loved and still continue to love that album. That album played at full blast in a mini van with all my friends pissing our parents off is my childhood.
Loving Billy’s 50s pompadour/greaser look
Just got it in. Played it with both a JB-loaded Strat and a P90 LP Jr.-style guitar. It's the Dookie-era tone, but also NAILS American Idiot album tones and beyond. Throw a TS-style pedal in front of it and this thing gets HEAVY.
But when is they dropping PT2?👀
@@joshzorrill6951 checking in... no pt2 lol
ZMan1471 Been at it for a long time with more pedals in and out of my rig than I can count, a few of which were Marshall-in-a-Box type pedals. Nothing does what this thing does with the same note articulation / definition.
I gotta buy it soon
Just got mine this morning and loving it so far.
Quick question though: what kind of setting on the pedal do you use to get the American idiot style tones?
Seeing him without any make-up's strange now.
That’s how they wrote and performed all of their least insufferable music, in my opinion - sans makeup and in their street clothes. The less collectively casual/ugly Green Day got as a unit (which isn’t saying the makeup or Slash clothes looked any good), the worse and more cringe-inducing the songs got.
@@buddhull
Agreed, their latest album was (In my eyes) dogshit at best.
@@zachdove470 oh I'm sure you can do better?.douchbag
Shit... this is what it is... i am like something feels awfully weird here..
This look is fine. I wish he would stick with it for the next Green Day record. But we all know once Green Day releases new music again it’s back to the eyeliner and Hot Topic teeny emo look.
I love it when a distortion or overdrive pedal can reach into fuzz teritory. It just sounds really cool and messy.
Same mate
Messi.... yeah....
Funny thing is, if you look at old interviews even Billie says he doesn't know how they got the Dookie tone on the album. He was basically using a 1959SLP Marshall Head modded with an extra gain stage and master volume. In the studio it sounded totally different than on the album. I'm sure the MXR pedal gives you a pretty good approximation, but if you want the true Dookie tone you're going to want an old Marshall plexi, or at least something like a JCM800 with a Vintage 30 loaded cabinet.
no ones gonna spend that much money to sound like fucking Green Day lmao
@@bittrain1658 You'd be surprised
@@bittrain1658 Maybe not just to sound like Green Day, but if you had that rig I bet you could get some fucking amazing tones that sound nothing like Green Day as well.
@@bittrain1658 Yeah, it's not like they've ever sold any records or anything. They've never inspired anyone to pick up an electric guitar.
@@bittrain1658 I spent a fair amount of coin getting their tone nailed because it's a brilliant sound. However, it's all the old school rock bands like AC/DC and stuff that the sound originates from since they all used that identical head.
billie joe has been transforming into billy joel and it’s scaring me
LOL.
All Billies shall morph into one mega Billie.
Nah.
@@SeptemberOftheDead wdym nah
@@RealestPoser He’s not transforming into Billie Joel, he just made a new banger album.
0:55 He plays one of my lies. I'd love to see them play that live. I fucking love playing that song.
Ikr!
They played it at Woodstock 94 and a ton of other performances
I caught that too. He def still loves his older stuff
make fun of BJA skills all y'all want but this dude can play the fatest biggest power chords. Like Steve Vai said, it's not easy to make it sound so huge.
@@lotsapasta0858 sure, but I was more talking about the atmosphere rather than the technical aspects. I'm just saying it's harder than it looks to make it sound like that.
He has blue next to him but he doesn’t play it 🤔
Well, this is only part 1. Part 2 should be up soon.
Because he needs to play authentic
Because when he plays a different guitar and demos the pedal and it sounds like the Dookie era tone, it convinces people that you dont need a strat with humbuckers and all you need is the pedal to sound like the dookie era tone
Maybe because he's probably under some kind of contract with Gibson and have to do marketing as much as possible for the guitar brand.
The point of the dookie drive pedal is to emulate the dookie tone blue makes, using the actual guitar defeats the purpose
Just bought it for my 13 year old(more for me)... I love it!!! Someday I hope to meet the band someday!!. 9 years old when they came out with dookie (94) was my first cassette tape. And it never gets old! Ever!
It’s only been a day, and I’m anxiously waiting for part 2
I'm still Waiting for the MXR Dookie Drive pedal. Ordered it in Januari. Wake Me Up When September Ends
*_Insomniac will forever be their greatest (and heaviest) album._*

Probably the best distortion pedal I’ve ever purchased, at least for the kinds of noise that I like to make 🤘🏻

Marshall super lead and a boss blues driver. With a JB loaded hardtail guitar. That’s the Dookie sound
dig it.
Actually the Blues Driver didn't come out until 1995, over a year after Dookie was recorded.
Says the guy that doesn't have his gear.
he only uses the blues driver as a boost for solos
I love fuzz, this is perfect.
beautiful that les paul custom!
BILLIE Love you so much
I think I heard some Kerplunk!
You did. Good ears.
Yeah definitely it was "one of my lies"
Billie never gets older
Nah mate. Hair dyes just getting cheaper 🤌😂
I used to put a Fender Bassman pedal in front of it and it nailed the Green Day tone.
I have since sold both.
so dope
And that was all coming through a twin?!
Brandon Reyes that’s the impressive part.
Mine just arrived! It sounds great through my little vox practice amp. Can't wait to use it with my Mesa F-50 combo. I've been chasing the Dookie/Insomniac tone since the mid 90's, and have been through countless "Marshall in a box" pedals. I eventually landed on the Wampler Sovereign (great pedal) but I think the Dookie Drive will be taking it's place on my pedalboard.
I have a little Vox practice amp upstairs that I think this will go great with! So far I have only tried it on my '78 Marshall JMP50 #1987 and it sounds killer! I posted a video of it on my channel. Check it out if you want to. I'm so happy I grabbed one of these.
ESBFett the demo sounded great! And that's probably the best "Blue" replica I've seen BTW. I love how you're actually using an early 80's Fernandes Revival strat with the late 70's Bill Lawrence in the bridge instead of a daphne blue squier with a cheap humbucker lol.
I noticed that the gain knob doesn't seem to do anything when the blend knob is turned all the way to the "Pete" position, but it has a huge effect when I'm favoring the "Meat" side. I really liked the tones I was getting with the blend knob at about 11:00 and the gain around 1:00-2:00.
why don't you buy a marshall?
Hi, may I ask what is your vox practice amp ? I also have one and am not sure if it will do somethig.
He doesn’t age!
The hair dye helps lol
1:53 reminds me of Misfits. SO COOL
"...go from loud to louder" never heard a better description for a drive pedal
I love me some Dookie and Insomniac tone.
Billie Joe is immortal.
Billie is ageing very nicely
My buddy ordered one June 4 because only 2000 were to be made. We honestly thought this pedal was never going to fully release. Supposedly, someone got their's today. He totally has his fingers crossed, hopefully any day now.
Got mine yesterday, I ordered it January 24th
So it’s not limited to 2000 units anymore?
@@Dimillio7 I'm not sure man, check out some online retailers. They should let you know if they have them in stock and when they are expected to ship.

I bet Dana Carvey could do a great impression of Billy Joe.
GREEN DAY 💚
Hello. Is it possible to switch between my amps gain setting and with the dookie drive on my amps clean channel only? If so could you please explain how I could accomplish that as I am new to pedals and it’s hookup variations.
I have a Bugera G5 Infinium 5 watt amp head with an effects loop. I love my amps gain channel and the Dookie Drive’s far left Pete, lower crunch setting on my amps clean channel. Thanks.
I just unpacked mine!
Does it sound as good in person as it does on video? I'm considering it!
How'd you get it already? I've been checking every single day for a ship date on this thing hah
eifersucht14c I just uploaded a quick video of it on my channel. It’s a crude video but you’ll get the idea. Check it out!
Send it back
@@MichaelD8393 In person it sounds even better.
Best he's looked in years
Stand and deliver!
Billie Joe's hairstyle looks like similar to Teen/adult gohan from DBZ. Also what if MXR makes Linkin Park Hybrid Theory/Meteora Guitar pedal?
I love that distorted sound god dammit! 😍 haha
🖤
Typically in my opinion, when a pedal distributer releases a signature pedal trying to emulate the sound on a record, they’re usually so close...but there always seems to be something missing. Not in this case. I didn’t think I’d be saying it, but MXR really knocked it out of the park with this one.
Wish they would go back to that dookie/insomniac sound again
Would you run this through your amps fx loop or through the front end into the clean? Im playing an orange th30. I have ordered one but not entirely sure yet where it would sit on the pedal bord amongst my maxon od808 and tc spark
Jonathan Nielsen i play a jcm 800 it only has the one channel 🤟🏼. When i ordered the pedal i had an orange th30 and the idea was to run it into the clean channel but the jcm was too good to pass on
The thing he’s recording in is peaking
What a beautiful almost 50 years old 😉
Any suggestions for pedal setups?

Is their really a differences in the brick device or are they like any other products with a nice tag on it to make it unique
😮 Billie Joe Armstrong is so handsome, great singer and songwriter
it's a bit DS1-ish, but more defined?
i don't know, it's a cool sounding pedal and gets pretty close to dookie. kinda hard to get a modded JCM800 through a massive cab double mic'd sound through a pedal and a twin.
Yeah I fucking want it
Damn... Bro.
I play a Fender Strat thru an Orange head/marshall cab set up using just the Dookie Drive for distortion. (Decimator for gate on 9clock)-- it's the best chunk-to-punk pedal option around. Fight me on that!
Sounds like dookie 💥🎸
dammit i wanted this thing
It´s that a fuzz pedal, distortion, crunch, overdrive?
Me likey!
I wish that the pedal on the green day uk store to sell them?
he stepped on dookie
Is he using fender twin reverb?
I'm not a fan of pedal distortion. But man does that thing look awesome.
He said “Dookie”. 😂
Billie got his warning era face back
I wish he put more rock and roll solos in Green Day's songs.
Just buy the MXR FOD instead. Exactly the same circuit, but the FOD has a switch for mid scoop/flat/mid boost.
Oh and it's cheaper.
