- Stuck at home, lets dive into my sketchbook and draw something together. I thought this was a good opportunity to redesign an old character of mine that doesn't spark my interest anymore (and since I love the other two characters she hangs out with all the time, I want to want to draw her...if that makes sense.) Giving her a dog should help. XP
What do you think? Is the new design an improvement?
Oh hey, also, what should I name this 'girl gang'? Something mobile, something fast, something not lame? XP

the old Dex design feels like what she would look like when she gets into her teen years, the new one feels like what she look like as a 11-12 year old

The old Dex reminded me of like someone's older sister who grew up only with brothers and was very influenced by the steryotypes the boys were brought up with. She felt like a rebel character who didn't quite fit in with the real young vibes the other girls gave off

What if Dex's pug (Skid) had turquoise ear's to match? I know of some pet owners who dye their dog's tails (with a pet-safe dye of course!) and I think it'd just be really cool. It would also in a way match with the idea that someone in her family is a hairdresser/ everyone had colorful hair! :D

so re: the realism of having colored hair. my niece is seven and has a bunch of different colored streaks in her hair 'cause whenever her mom bleaches her hair she lets my niece get a new blonde streak, and every so often they make some diy temporary hair dye so she's got a lil mini rainbow on top of her head. so it definitely is possible for a kid to have colored hair if they also have a cool parent, but it might be against school dress code which was the case in my school district up until high school (i don't know how old your characters are meant to be)

Background story: in these crazy times the gang picks up grocery's for old and sick people and leaves them at their door. Being on wheels makes them perfect to drive back and forth and help out

When skateboarding coming from a skateboarder myself, you would want something covering ur shins like high tops with thick socks so when ever u kick you board up or do a trick it one hurt as much. Maybe u could keep that in mind when doing her shoes, but this turned out really mice 👌

I’ve noticed a lot of people draw girls with long hair or ponytails, but I never see a character rocking a pixie cut. Closest I ever see for short hair is like a bob or something but it’d be nice to see some pixie chicks ✨

Ok in like a story setting they should have a friend/mother figure that's an old lady and when she was younger she was a professional roller skater or bike racer or something extreme and one time she had to go do something heroic and she goes out on her little old lady thing like a badass ( sorry for the language)

I have an idea for Dex, or a new addition-- or even changing a character... I've been thinking, what if one of the characters was a boy? Men often have a more square jaw, so a square seems perfect! But making it match would be a little difficult... Your choice, though! *LE GASP* OH MY GOD YOU COULD EVEN MAKE A TEAM THAT'S SORT OF... THEIR RIVAL! Than the square idea would work! They can also be versing girls or boys. Maybe they could have some different gear.. Like uh... Ice skating, bike riding.. And something else! Hope ya notice this idea! :D

Shape language is actually a fascinating topic in art. Especially stylized art. So like, square means loyal, I think. Round is friendship. Triangle is energy and danger. There are UA-cam videos about shape language with characters which are a lot better at explaining it then me, ofc.
@@valeries9297 square is a more grounded shape, often used in grumpier and old-fashion characters-- like the old man from up- hes made up from squares, and his head is quite literally a square shape.

I imagine that these girls are in like a post apocalypse universe, but at the point where society has started to heal yknow? There’s limited transportation but they found their wheels in a junkyard somewhere and now they ride around the neighborhood/camp/community helping little animals and doing errands.

Hello Rin. I don't know if you'll see this message ( and also excuse my english, i don't speak it well), but i just want to thank you for all your work and creativity. I was in a real hard depression, but one day your art gave me a reason to live. I realized that i want to live to create beautiful things like you do.
So thank you for everything you do, stay in safety and continue to be a superhero for all of us.
I feel like it'd be cute to design "foils" for each of the girls. Someone who contrasts with them (usually in design and personality both) to highlight things about their personalities. I find that's really helpful for me when trying to give characters a story. This can mean designing a boy for some, or even a girl whose personality highlights different things. Maybe another girl skateboarder like Dex who is hyper-girly to contrast with Dex's more gender-neutral or even tomboyish design (depending on how you look at it). They can be sort of a rival skating gang of sorts that act in opposition to our little gaggle of cuties. A common foil for younger characters are bullies, so maybe another group that tends to bully our gaggle? I don't know, just throwing it out there lol

I instantly love these characters! Also, as far as dyed hair goes, my parents were pretty lenient with my self expression from a young age, so I had purple hair and funky clothes as a kid. Dex seems like someone I would've been friends with in school.

Okay but here me out. These three are young right? And remember how dex had a design that was to mature before.Maybe that could be her older sister. And everyone in her family has some sort of dyed hair. Or these 3 get a babysitter and you could use dex's old design!
Im not sure how old they're supposed to be, but the first round Dex looks about 14 or 15, and the second round looks about 11, and I think that's about right.
As soon as I heard Rin say '2 other buddies' I knew it was Wheels, Scoot and Dex. I love these characters SO much :D
I wish I could enjoy drawing and designing characters as much as you do. I just keep criticizing everything from start to finish and never feel happy, but you're so happy with what you're doing and it makes your art reflect your confidence in your choices.
Listening to her get excited about characters makes me happy. A lot of people need to be more like her.

Lost all my sketch books when I relocated to the US last year as they were to heavy to move with me and lost my want to keep drawing. I am so glad I am back into it now
