The nurses who care for these poor babies are truly angels.
They're just doing their job
Yes and they cry over it
It‘s their job 😂😂
I’m a long time foster parent and I specialize in newborns who come out of the hospital addicted or having effects. When I see a mom work hard through treatment, do everything she has to, and I get to see the happiness on her face when all her hard work pays off, and she gets custody, it’s amazing. I’m also always willing to stay involved, if mom has questions, needs respite, etc. Everyone deserves chances to improve. ❤
Thats amazing. I would love to be a foster parent one day.
Thank you for being so amazing. So many people are judgmental and think that every baby should automatically be taken away permanently from these mothers. It sounds like you are not only a person with a big heart, but also a very smart, compassionate person. Your foster children, and the parents, are very lucky to have you.
God Bless You ♥️🌞♥️
My 6 year old was born addicted to meth. We have fostered many babies, and worked closely with the Mothers and some Fathers. It changes your perception once you work with these Mothers. We got 37 children home to recovered Mothers. My 6 year old's parents lost their battle with addiction. Addiction has only victims all around.
How do they act when addicted to meth?
I’m so proud of that doctor for calling addiction a disease and mentioning that we need to remove the stigma. Bravo.
Bravo...and a lot of the stigma is based in a mislead sense of right and wrong that comes from religion
I agree with u
Absolutely
Yes! We need every doctor to think this way about drug addicts! Loving them like Jesus would.
Yes so good to see,
I don't like what she has done to her baby, no baby should have to suffer. However, she is making an effort to be a good mom and I hope her and her baby's journey is a positive one.
Wow how was she able to keep her baby? In the crack era the automatically took the babies away no question asked. Especially if you were black and brown.
@@TheYoli182 The crack epidemic was decades ago. Doesn’t apply nowadays
@@TheYoli182 I believe she was only able to have her baby because she's in whatever program that was to stay clean? It's still very much the standard to take drug addicted babies away from the mother at birth, regardless of race.

Good on you mumma, you did the right thing by coming forward! As long as mum is clean and getting the help she needs we need to keep these babies with their mothers!
Dr. Maxwell explained this process so concisely and his compassion for the mothers is honestly so nice to hear. If more people thought the way he did about addiction and how we can help people caught in the disease process, we could actually start to fix the opioid crisis.
I think that is the main road block to ending the drug crisis, is peoples’ stereotypical biases and judgments. People don’t consider that there is SO much more to the story than people just “wanting to get high”. Especially with the opioid crisis, many people were first introduced to the drug by their own doctors for legitimate pain. Many of these judgmental types believe that addicts deserve whatever pitfalls come to them in life and they should be left alone to suffer it all. Then you have the ones that still refuse to believe that it is a disease. And as these attitudes continue, the drug epidemic continues to rise and we ALL suffer from the consequences; whether that be from crime rising, higher taxes, or being personally involved w/a loved one battling addiction. I just wish that once and for all we could try something different. The criminalization on drugs has failed. That would be like trying to fight diabetes or heart disease by throwing the victim of such diseases in jail. How much do you think that would help??? It wouldn’t, at all. And that is pretty much where we are at with the drug epidemic. I pray that people can open their eyes enough to realize that even if they DON’T agree that addiction is a disease, that they could at least admit that the way were handling it has failed miserably. Another statistic is that something like 70-80% of addicts had some form of sexual abuse as children. How people can still be so judgmental with facts like that, I’ll never understand. Addicts are people who are hurting so badly emotionally that they’re willing to risk killing themselves just to take the pain away temporarily. These people need help, not hate, judgment, and definitely not prison. Now if they commit crimes such as robbery to get the drugs, I believe they do have to pay for that crime. But the people whose only crime is being found in possession of small personal use quantities of drugs, those are the ones who shouldn’t be sent to prison just for that. I hope one day things can change, but I’m definitely not holding my breath. The comments I see on UA-cam alone let me know that there’s still so much ignorance out there regarding addiction.
These babies born addicted do a high pitched scream like I never heard come from an infant. It is heart breaking how much they suffer. Makes me sick that these women allow this to happen. A lot of them act like they don't even care. It is obvious they are still HIGH. Use birth control if you are a druggy. Shame on you. A lot of you already have children you don't seem to care about and don't have custody of and here you are doing it all over again.
Plus their mothers are going through their own struggles. I was born addicted and my mother never really bonded with me. She just kept saying how i cried all the time and never stopped. That same dynamic of her coldness towards me continued into adulthood. I am not making any generalizations b cause some mothers bond well but I suspects many don’t. Many are either returning to their drugs or going through withdrawal so they never cuddle and nurture the baby like they should
IT IS I HAVE HEARD IT WHEN I WAS IN ST.JOHN HOSPITAL ON MOROSS ROAD IN DETROIT MI THEY HAVE A SPECIAL UNIT FOR DRUG ADDICTED BABIES THOSE AWFUL MITTS HAVE TO GO NEVER TO BE USED AGAIN RESTRAINT MITTS SHOULD CUT OFF THE OUTFIT
@@cici736You are correct. I quit while pregnant but started back right after. She was born 8 lbs and healthy, but I didn't bond with her. I was so caught up in it all that I didn't cuddle her and make the memories that I could have. I quit for good 13 yrs ago. By then she had already been raised by her grandparents. We're a lot closer now though. She's so much like me at that age, it's crazy. 😊 I've had so long to think about regrets that I'm determined to be the best I can be for her now. She needs me now and I can't let her down.
Drug addicted babies have nothing to do with the drugs their mothers took.
Just like aborted babies have nothing to do with the act of the father to the mother.
Exactly. And they are always unmarried or have bad relationships with the dad
I’m glad she’s trying to turn her life around, but I automatically detest people who hurt children. Having to go through withdrawals from ingesting it in the womb is one of the worst pains a baby can go through. I can empathize with addicted mothers but those babies had no choice in what they ingested. Addiction is a disease, but a conscious decision was made to do the drug or drugs the first time.
The screams these babies do are totally different from regular babies. Poor angels are in so much pain. God Bless them and May he bring continued health and healing to them🤍
Wishing continued health, strength, love and compassion for all families going through this brave process.
As soon as I heard the baby cry, I rubbed my belly and said " Oh No" I'm 33 weeks pregnant today and it's very important to do your best to stay clean during pregnancy but thank God we have great Doctors in place to assist these infants.
poor babies with addiction problems, they are such precious inocent babies.
Keep up the good work momma. She is beautiful. She will need lots of cuddles but also find healthy ways to make yourself feel comforted. Thank you for sharing your story it really brave.
Lawd I hate seeing babies go thru this. All they ask for is love and comfort, not pain!
@lexys l you were quick to judge too sweetheart. op said nothing bad about the mother. just stated their concern about the baby. so please stop calling people judgemental and judge people in the same sentence lol 😇

The sad thing is, if she got on subutex immediately after she got pregnant rather than starting at 30 weeks, that baby likely would’ve been born without withdrawal. Many are. If they do it’s typically less severe. Whether she knew about that or not, I don’t know. I’m glad she did eventually get help though, there are so many moms who don’t care and don’t.
Good luck with ur baby. She’s beautiful.
This hospital is near me and the epidemic in this city is so terrible. Breaks my heart for all these babies, they definitely don’t deserve this.
The baby cries pulled at my heart 😭😭😭
Why does America have such a terrible drug problem? What is wrong with your society?

Beautiful program! Huge shout out to all involved including the mama’s 🎉
So sad, praying for the mom and baby that all works out for both of them
I understand 100% your fears and struggles with addiction and knowing that you need to stop but have struggles and can't. Even though you know that it's so very wrong. I applaud you for becoming the person you are today. Everyday is recovery and having a good support plan and group is a must. Keep up your great work thus far! ❤
Why would you have a baby under those circumstances?! I wouldn't even have a baby as a non-addict because I know I wouldn't be a good mother.
If the mom is mainlining heroin, not a lot critical thinking is happening.
I can’t help but judge women who use knowing they are pregnant. Get an abortion if you don’t believe in abortion get clean. It’s heartbreaking what those innocent babies have to go through
So sad that these mothers did not get help immediately upon knowing they were pregnant !!!
What horrifies me is not babies born addicted, but how so many addicted parents sell their babies to pedophiles and psychopats that molest and torture them from the moment they are born, just so parents can have money for their addiction.. I'm glad this mother was willing to change and help herself and the child, God bless them❤
I've not heard of this happening in first world countries specifically selling children where have you seen this happen ? I've grown up with addict parents a dad who was a high up drug dealer and now I work with people who have addiction pasts I'm in Australia.
@@Efhgilook it up there are alot of stories where moms sell their kid or kids for drugs
@@Efhgi In most big cities in Europe, as well as USA. I'm glad you didn't experienced it yourself, or anyone you've meet.
@@Efhgiof course that happens here. Child protection thought my ex who was a drug addict was better choice than me, the shizophrenic 🙄 I won in the end cause I had a lot of professionals in my Court, however my ex sold my son to a pedo within his family to abuse my son so he'd have drug money. In Australia. Happens alot
This poor baby already looks exhausted from life. She deserves to be with a mom who actually loves her and will put her first. Yes, true love that is accompanied by actions that prove it. Every abusive parent will cry crocodile tears and cry oh they miss their child they're so regretful and other BS. I feel so sorry for this child.
Do you know anyone who has been yanked away from their bio parents? Honestly even terrible bio parents (which this mom clearly is not) the kids are permanently traumatized if they are taken from them.
We need to do everything to keep children with their bio family- it would be easier if that wasn’t the case- but there is a biological pull towards your bio family and it lasts into adulthood. Causes severe trauma for most to lose bio family .
Just a little correction, babies aren't born addicted. They do go through withdrawal, NAS (neonatal abstinence syndrome). When a person is addicted there is more going on in the brain than just physical withdrawal. It affects the parts of your brain that control judgment, compulsion, the reward system, joy, anxiety, and alot more. This is why it's not just a matter of physical withdrawal that keep people locked in this disease. And it's also why you don't see babies crawling around seeking drugs. We need to watch what we say because it makes an impact. There is alot of stigma that keeps women from getting medical care or treatment already. Working with moms in WV like her ismy career and my passion. I feel really lucky to get to know the incredible women I work with! I am also a mom in long-term recovery myself. Moms do recover. ❤
you're trying to show off your knowledge in a way that won't garner the validation from the people that matter. And on top of that you are wrong. So wrong that it's laughable. Do you know a baby isn't crawling around looking for drugs? Because It has not learnt where to get it from. It can't even comprehend what is going on. Compulsion, judgement and all these things you mentioned, as well as the behaviour rgearding drug seeking are only not present in the baby, because it has not learnt yet all the things that someone who is older with addiction, has learnt. All it really knows how to do is feel pain and screm for help. why is the baby not crawling around looking for crack?!?! lol. that is hilarious! For all intents and purposes, this baby is addicted. I am not sure why someone would want to argue otherwise. The baby is dependant. You are just arguing about semantics. You are being...pedantic, and showing off about it.
most of these comments are disgusting! Praise to this mom for having more strength than anyone else on this thread, get it mama, dont quit!
That's the problem she should've " quit" the drugs to begin with.
God bless this organization..
So important to help the mom and the baby❤
Good that you tried to get help, you will have to live with the pain you caused for the rest of your life, but use this as your motivation to give your kids the life they deserve and be the best mum you can be. You got the support, use it. Good luck. 👍💙

Addiction can be called a disease but it’s also a choice the children aren’t given the choice 😡
No, it’s a disease. End of story.
Drug addiction is a choice, not a disease. A conscious decision was made to do the drug or drugs the first time.
@@khfan4life365 It’s a disease. Keep thanking whatever god you pray to that it hasn’t affected you yet. A choice to try it doesn’t mean they deserve it. I tried marijuana. But I was able to resist becoming addicted to it. Some people are genetically predisposed to addiction, it can run in families.
As far a doctors need to care, it is a disease but the rest of us still know that it is a self imposed one. Doctors are there to treat disease not make value judgements. A lot of diseases are consequences of bad lifestyle choices, even cancers. The stigma is not helpful in most cases. These mothers put off getting help because they are scared of judgement, potential criminal charges or losing custody. If we created an environment where this mother wasn't so afraid she could have accessed help in time for her baby to not be born as badly impacted by drugs. Harm minimisation is the goal.

Why these women allowed to keep their babies.
I hope Courtney and all the rest stopped having children. If you know you want your drugs more than your children, get your tubes tied etc.

God bless these women for having the strength of confessing their drug usage. A lot of the girls that I went to high school with her in the same scenario and what’s even more heartbreaking is the fact that they were teenagers as well. Those young mothers used to really verbally harassed me. And I mean I was in a dark headspace, but I didn’t realize at the time what allowed them to go into that state of need to verbally abuse, me. I was only 15 when the toxic verbal abuse started. Hurt people hurt others but those girls never ever deserved what they’re going through especially as young teenage mothers. Words cannot even describe the amount of sadness I feel for them, but words can describe the amount of bravery and courage. These women have to confront their past, and to strive for the fact that they want to write their wrongs and become better mothers. 10 years have passed and while I am a little frustrated and disappointed that 99% of the girls that I went to school with her in almost identical scenarios as the women in this video. But they are much younger when they enter motherhood. And although I am a little irritated for lack of a better term that they didn’t invite me to their a 10 year high school reunion party. I could see where the awkwardness could come from. I just hope and I pray that these girls find the right associations to help them. I hope and I pray that somehow, these girls find the correct form of assistance to help them. That they have a chance to get out of poverty.

I want to add an additional bit since my time working with these children special-needs kids. I was a teacher from age 18 to age 26. These kids are angels. Their parents were just a bunch of very hurt and confused teenagers. They honestly thought that making fun of me. Because I have a high functioning set up learning disabilities. And for reasons that still escaped me they honestly thought my family had a lot of money. Hurt people hurt other people. And as a former teacher, it hurt me to know that I liked the credentials to help those special-needs kiddos. It hurt me to see that their parents were so desperate for somebody or anybody to look after their special needs children. That the pressure of looking after their special needs children all fell on me. pair that with a lady who ran a church preschool. Whose daughter is in the same scenario. But unlike the kids who I went to public school with. Had a very entitled personality. She wants her mommy to raise her special-needs baby. She doesn’t see the harm done to her special needs baby. And her mommy wanted to outsource her unwanted grandchild rearing to me. A lot of these girls parents want to outsource their unwanted, grandchild or children rearing to me, because despite the fact that all other former stereotypical beliefs, put up on my family, have since disintegrated. I feel sad. That all these teenage mothers. Who used to ruthlessly probably abuse me. No me as the girl from a well respected. Well educated Indian family. So their mothers and the grandmothers to the special-needs kids. want to outsource child rearing to me. I can only hope and they pray that he is brave girls get opportunities to not only afford the expensive healthcare and medical bills for their drug affected special-needs babies. But I wish to God that they don’t stay in abject poverty.
There's no excuse for continually putting your baby in harms way and then feeling bad for the pain already caused. Cool, she made an attempt to get clean.. farrrrrrr later than she should've. Cancer is a disease, gestational diabetes is a disease.. drug use is a choice. She chose to force her baby to be born as an addict and it's absolutely sickening that there are so many mothers that do it.
My new born born 26th April and it’s 11May my baby boy is still in ICU. I feel the baby is having alcohol withdrawal. Mom isn’t seeing drinking 90% of her pregnancy was an issue.
I just don’t get how these women won’t use birth control.
In the South(where this apparently took place), there have been certain states that have tried to ban birth control... and ban abortions at the same time, which makes 0 sense
My cousin has had 4 kids and she’s an addict and has not raised any of them.. her oldest is gonna be 10 and she’s never had him since he was born and same with her other 3... she’s never had birth control.. still doesn’t..
Stigma against it, being forced to not take it (like an abusive partner or a parent), not having access to it, lack of education on birth control, simply not knowing you got pregnant, and also the fact that birth control can still fail. There's lots of possible reasons.

At least the state of New Jersey should try to help these with ladies, I said this in my last few comments, but the fact that they had to resort to outsourcing their parenthood of such profound special-needs babies born to them in such identical circumstances, with the only difference being that they were young mothers. The stigma they face the object, poverty, they face they do not deserve it. And had society not have such a negative stigma attached to drug usage. I honestly feel like so many of my fellow high school graduating batch mates wouldn’t have this nasty disease.
Stop having kids!!!!
I wish I had the power to take their addictions and inflict them on people like you instead
Booze and pot do the same.
I think you need to educate yourself a little more before speaking on certain things . I can tell you right now that pot does not do the same thing as alcohol smh
Umm... No that's completely different
Pot doesn’t.. you could technically smoke pot during pregnancy and not have it pass to the baby
@Juece says who
My mother smoked pot & cigarettes through out her pregnancies and all 3 of us girls were low birth weight and have asthma.
Why are women allowed to keep their children when they do this? Why does the system enable addicts
I HAVE SEEN DRUG ADDICTED BABIES CRY FOR THE FIX THEY NEED I SAW ONE DRUG ADDICTED MOTHERS LEAVE THEIR BABIES BEHIND AT THE HOSPITAL AND WALK AWAY FROM HARMING THE BABY
