So this is how the legend of the grey sweater began... legends truly aren’t born they’re made!
Ed bassmasters "chip diamond" sweater is better.
💪🏻👍🤙🏻
It's the grey sweater. I thought he stole that from Mrs. Voorhees' corpse at the end of Friday the 13th Part 2.
@@MrErichonda30 I’ll have to check him out!
PHSSSSS!
God bless Jess. Heart warming and breaking to see how it began. I never saw this and have been watching all your other videos. My wife and I lived in an RV for almost a year on and off until we had our first kid. God bless you Steve. Thank you for the comfort and joy your videos bring us all. Really cool to see your punk rock past before Beautiful Wife came along and cleaned you up ;) May you find peace in these times.
I can’t believe I haven’t seen this either. he’s such a good man and I’m heartbroken for him as well 😢
Great comment❤️
I come back to this video every so often to see the history of Steve and all the changes through the years. His videos always make me feel good. So many millionaires in the world, and we really just want to be like Steve.
@@arkansasmike5474 money Can't stop you from living like Steve.
Just spending it can.
I feel such sorrow and sadness for him. This was his first video that UA-cam pushed my way. Peace.
I think after watching the notice of your Steve's wife passing, a whole lot of us who thought we were long-time fans got the sudden realization we never watched "where it all began". What seemed like just a footnote on the end was very special to see.
Sometimes -- just sometimes -- the algorhythim does right by creators.
Who is here watching this in late 2020?
Love seeing the early beginnings of the Steve Wallis journey!
Today!!
Yeah buddy
Love it!!
Yes,
Me
I’ve been watching you Steve since I found this documentary 5 years ago. I was working 60+ hours a week in a kitchen. You were my hope that one day maybe I’d be brave enough to take a journey and figure out what I really wanted out of life. Fast forward to now. I’m living non conventionally on a small homestead supporting myself boss free. I just wanted to say ‘’thanks’’ formally, haha. Keep your head up Steve, there are thousands of people that think highly of you and the amount of positive influence you’ve had on us can not be formulated with modern math. Your are a Saint, Saint Steve of the Boondocks.
♥️
Just watched this today for the first time. I'd have to say it was hard to watch because you could see the weight of everything in your face. Your transformation is incredible and it makes me happy to see how well you are doing. Keep up the great work and God bless
so true
Insane to think that this is the same honest and wholesome man who cleans up garbage left by others. I think it's safe to say he knows where he came from. You're the man Steve. So happy to be on this journey with you.
In this, he looks like he walked straight from the movie set of "Strange Brew." 😆
My fave movie
I'd say that Steve's journeys have taken him in a very positive direction and made him a better person.
It's so weird hearing Steve swear so much... you can tell he was in a different place at this time. Both physically and mentally.
It's so heartwarming seeing his latest videos where he genuinely seems happy.

Heartbreaking
Prayers for Gods peace to you Steve. My sympathies for your loss
She didn't change him, he gave up his freedom for her. He traded freedom for comfortable captivity. Now she's gone. Once you've given up your freedom, you really can't go back. I know he'd say it was worth it.
She didn't change him, he willingly changed his lifestyle for her. There's a big difference, my husband also changed his lifestyle ( to settle down with me from his wild partying ways) it was his choice.
The same things you've spoken of, are of my thoughts also. I love Steve. Serious. He is such a down to earth person and unique personality. Wish I knew Steve personally.
Started watching Steve's stealth camping channel in late 2020. Am now watching some of his earlier episodes. This documentary gave insight into how the journey of Steve Wallis began and was excellent.

Once a bum, always a bum they say
Watching this now (2021), for the first time, looks like a "origin story" and this one is beautiful Steve
Steve might have a few bodies put away
Same, just diving back to figure out where this guy came from.
Also watching in 2021, October. 3 minutes in and already clicked thumbs up. Steve's story is a compelling one of 21st century disenchantment with corporate mediocrity. Not a small number of his viewers likely have stories of their own with similar beginnings: running away.
It just popped up in my feed today
Steve looks like the forgotten burglar in Home Alone.
This changes everything about what kind of person I thought you were. I always figured you were just a guy who started random camping and decided to film and make a littler series out of it. This video explains perfectly how you became/evolved, and it makes me appreciate your work on an entirely different level.
Thank You! I've been sitting here trying to figure out how to word that exact comment. Very well said. 👍🏼

Me too huh! I've been following his 2019 - 2020 videos and I happened on this. What a surprise. It's awesome to get the backstory. I love both 'Steves' they are very different too and it's not just the hair.
Nailed it! This was not what I expected. Mind blown. A younger, wilder Steve. So awesome in all it’s beer, cigarette, dog, and F-bomb goodness. I lived on boats, and in tents, campers, and travel trailers, for most of 20s and early 30s, much of it with two dogs. All over the country and the world. It was a wild ride. Now I own a small home with my wife, and have a small boat and Aliner pop up for overnights and long weekends. I see my younger self in this video, and my older self in some of Steve’s new videos. Holy moly, just like all the recent comments, I’ve never stumbled upon this documentary that’s been mentioned in so many videos! It’s amazing to see a young Steve. It seems like such a long long time ago and it's only been 5 years this was posted. Didn't start out a fan but quickly became a weekly viewer. STEVE seems to be one of the most genuine people I have ever seen. On TV or in my real life.
The first video of Steve's I watched he was just camping in a campground and drove past a hut full of free firewood and hit the brakes and said be still my beating heart and then he lit the wet firewood with a blowtorch - I was hooked. Steve, we are all thinking of you.
He looks like a teenager here.
@@freeandhappybumblebee Thanks, I was wondering why he looked sooooo young.
@@melanies.7740 the beard
He's the absolute best.
What I LOVE about Steve's old videos is seeing how much he has matured and mellowed. In the old vids, he strikes me as an angry young rebel, (not in a bad way, just in the usual way that we transition from "young & rebellious", to "settled & focused") I had even forgotten that he smoked back then! 😂
Steve is such a humble Dude,... salt of the earth. He was back then, and he most definitely still is today!
Here we are in 2021, Steve has close to a half million subscribers, a beautiful wife, awesome home & land, and of course a "Crazy Neighbor". 🤠
He's loved by millions of people around the world! Had someone told him what was in store for him in the future, I doubt he would have believed it.
I'm so proud of the man he has become and grateful that he hasn't lost his love of nature. For me, "Camping with Steve" was the only bright spot in the Coronavirus pandemic of 2020. God bless ya Steve! May you enjoy many, many more years of exciting adventures! 👍👍(love to Jess as well) ❣❣
P.S.- is this the boat that you recently burned in your firepit? 🤔😁

It's also really weird to hear him swear.
He's the kinda bloke you'd love to randomly meet camping. Not all camping Rando's are the good sort.

I saved up money for three years to boondock out of my 4Runner. It’s going great but I have no idea what I’m going to do after. It scares me to think about and honestly it’s pretty depressing. I’m in no way lazy, I’ve worked very hard jobs in my life with long hours and making decent money but I was so unhappy it nearly killed me. Being on the road has made me happier than I’ve been in a long time but I still feel so lost. I’m sure I’m not the only one but it sure feels like it sometimes. Watching this and then seeing your more current videos definitely gives me some hope. Not much though. Normally this comment would get written out then I’d hold backspace until it doesn’t exist but... fuck it
Hang in there Garrison. There is hope until your last breath my friend.
This is just my, maybe dumb rambling, thoughts that might not even address your real concerns but I read your comment and have often been in the same spot. So disregard if this seems senseless or preachy and pretend I didn't write.
If you can learn to enjoy the time in the present- you're golden. I spend so much time worrying about the future and wish I didn't. Meanwhile the present has just flown by and I still have hardly figured out any future plans.
I try to focus on something daily that has really brought me joy. For a start you have a fucking 4runner. Kick ass, I love those trucks. Also, you seem to have freedom. That's truly the best. Every time in my life I have had ultimate freedom I've taken it for granted. But I imagine you worry about the next step. I spent a ton of time worrying, and worrying enough that it has impacted my health. I always worry about the next step.
STEP TWO
If you can get any type of work in a place you like or a place near friends go for it. Having people around is so important. Good friends are hard as hell to make but there is nothing more valuable.
As for the job, go for whatever, don't worry about status or the future, just get something mellow where you can collect your thoughts, then you can figure out your next step while at that job, just don't become complacent. But the important thing is that you are enjoying your life through all of this. Everything doesn't have to get figured out immediately. That's not important. But as long as you are trying and then also enjoying your day, you're kicking ass. Once you have any sort of job, you can live much in the same way that Steve is here. Quit the job if you need to hit the road again, no biggie. Then repeat.
You'll keep talking to people and eventually, maybe in a week, or maybe a year, something will come up. It's daunting but things have a way of shaking out OK. If you are kind to people, mind any addictions and keep them in check (or consciously address them), keep actively looking for whatever you want next (job, travel, friends, partner etc), things will happen. But the challenge is to stay happy and healthy in the process.
I really think you'll get it though. Cause you already had the guts to take off in a 4Runner and that is pretty bad ass. Later in life you are gonna look back and miss these days. It may sound crazy but you probably will.
Butt fuck it?
@@glenmchargue5461 Pretty sure step 2 is to crack open a beer. Just sayin' :p

I just found this channel tonight and started binge watching his newer videos(fall 2019). Then I landed on this... wow what an adventure, what a change he has made in his life. I found myself a little sad at the end of this and I'm not sure why - perhaps it was the end of an era and the beginning of another, or perhaps it was just the hauntingly reflective music at the end. I loved the music throughout. Steve seems like a really great guy and just wants to live free while having pure respect for everyone and everything around him - sadly that seems rare in our me first society.

Wow, watching this made me really emotional. I started watching this channel just a month ago, then suddenly this popped up in my recommended. This whole thing reminded me of how fast your life can change and how there is so much to be grateful for. At the end of 2010, age 23, I lost my home, my car, my job, my relationship of 3 years... I moved around a lot, roomed with people, lived in basements... but I kept a positive outlook, discovered hiking and biking, discovered how to be my own best friend. In 2014 I was finally able to get my own place, a small apartment close to the parks where I liked to get away, and in 2017 I met the woman I would end up marrying just this past year. Seeing the journey of someone who was just kind of going with the flow, not entirely sure of where life was taking him and with potential for things to not turn out great, but who got lucky and met an amazing supportive partner.. it really made me reflect! Awesome stuff, awesome to see real people out there living life and doing what they enjoy.. so here's a step 2 to that journey.
Even though I love this, it makes me feel sad too. A happy sadness. Maybe that makes sense to somebody out there.
It was a change in life, and for the better for sure... I’m just happy I documented what was going on
Steve Wallis Awesome, can see the joy in your eyes these days. Speaking of joy, thanks for the inspiration and calm - I watched loads of your videos during lockdown and found them very soothing, but you’ve heard this stuff before. My Nephew pointed me in your direction, there’s a bunch of us here in the UK who love your videos !
I like your simple approach, reminds me of some aspects of Buddhist philosophy, maybe that’s why your way of camping strikes a chord with people.
Boondocking movie reminded me also of George Orwell’s ‘Down and out in Paris and London’ in some ways, Orwell was a writer who decided to adopt a hobo lifestyle and became immersed in it and had great empathy for the people around him going through the same struggles - he then went back to his life as a writer after a few months. Obviously, Boondocking was your actual life, rather than a stance that you adopted as an experiment, but the general arc of developments reminded me of that book (one of my favourites !).
Anyhow, best wishes from the UK and thanks again, Alex 👍🇨🇦🇬🇧
It's fun to be an angry young man. You may not want to be that again, but that doesn't mean they weren't good days.
Came across this channel and kept seeing this documentary. It answered a ton of questions. God bless and hunker down. 🏕🐟
I'm so sorry for your loss, Steve. I can only imagine what you are going through right now. You're in my prayers, in Jesus Almighty name. ✝️🙏☦️
For you Steve, in the loving memory of your beautiful wife. Life is a journey and there are good times and bad times, but it's all worth it from the people you meet and the people you love, and those great memories will never be forgotten, you will always have your wife in your heart and soul where ever you go, and one day you will see her again. Your wife has passed from this life to the next. Her soul lives on, she is with the Lord Jesus Christ, to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
Steve, let the Lord comfort your soul while you grieve, cry and let it out.
God bless you Steve and your wife, in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, our Lord, God, and savior. ✝️🙏☦️💪💪💪
Yeah, you can tell this guy's got his s*** together now in his newer videos. I don't know you man, but I hope you're doing better. I wish you the best of luck. I love watching your camping videos. Let's hunker down. LOL
@You Tube i dont think hes trash talking. Its obvious Steve is doing way better now. Nothing bad about his condition in this video just great to see Steve grow as a person and a channel on youtube!!!
Me: watched “Boondocking” a few years back
Him: shows up in my feed as “Camping with Steve”
Me: this guy seems...familiar.
LOL
NO SHIT, me too! Just watched a bunch of his vids, subscribed, then learned he was the “boondocking” guy from that vid I watched five years ago! Life is funny sometimes. And I’m stoked on where he got on to: after watching this at first, I wasn’t sure if he weren’t a few months away from that van breaking and he becoming legit homeless.
Saaaaame. You do rock.
Look s like in the last 3 years you have aged funny.
I did it in reverse order. Feels like watching old home videos with the family!
This is heartbreakingly beautiful. You have come so far Steve, but you are still you. Not enough words to describe what this film means to me at the movement and the challenges I’m going through myself. You have given me another little reality check and I’m thankful for it. Peace and love to you mate.
Thanks Steve. I really dig this early stuff. I personally think your evolution to the present day camping with Steve show is very positive and uplifting progress. I'm praying for you and for the repose of beautiful wife's soul during her wake. God bless you Steve. Your insights and tips are helping me define my new post cancer hobby. Cheers Friend.
How fabulous. Puts all your later videos into context. Best wishes from South Wales.
Been following Steve for a couple years, never saw this video. Really gives a new appreciation for the channel. Keep on camping Steve, we’ll keep watching 👍🏻
Wow. This was a really good documentary. I started watching Steve's more recent videos about two months ago and finally watched this one. Seeing this different side of Steve was pretty cool to see how much he has matured and grown. Loved it!
Thinking about you right now Steve. Can't imagine what you are going through. RIP Beautiful Wife you will not be forgotten.
The best boondocking vid on youtube, period! Very raw and real. Video work, music and commentary is excellent!
BTW boondock comes from the Filipino (Tagalog) word bundok ...as in ... sa bundok ... in the wilderness. WW2 Veterans supposedly brought the word back and then there was a 1960s sing called "out in the boondocks" which further popularized the word or expression.
The song is down in the boondocks by Billy Joe Royal. Just saying
If only I could have told Steve back then that things are going to get SO much better for him!! I love seeing those who truly deserve it, do well.💙
Wow Steve, beautifully done. It seems you have changed a great deal in some ways, and I'm betting life with Jess had a lot to do with that. In more recent videos, you seem to radiate peace and happiness. I hope you find that again after your unimaginable loss. I'm so very sorry.
You have had quite a life journey, Steve. I can't believe it has already been three years since I watched this video for the first time. It suddenly popped up again today, and I watched it all the way through for the second time (I usually don't do that). An amazing film you made there for sure. And I can see that I forgot to give you a thumbs up back then. Fixed that now. Hope you are happy with the new property and that you and beatiful wife are living the good life together. Have a nice sunday, and have a good day, all.
"Sometimes you have to lose yourself to find yourself."
That’s deep for a chicken 🐓
We all might just be one meal away from homelessness. Rock bottom comes along to each of us in our lifetime. Good video Steve!
Like others i started with your newer videos first and stumbled onto this one and am so glad i did; you killed it with the soundtrack selection on this - giving me all the feels
Thanks Jordan!
Had to watch this today. So sorry for your loss Steve.
This early Steve production is one of my all time UA-cam favorites. Steve your a pioneer and truly a Pro. All of us outdoor enthusiast's truly appreciate your talents, especially when we're stuck in our normal work lives. Cheers My Canadian Brother. -Jason Thompson Milwaukee Wisconsin
Been watching this channel for a while and I love going back to some of these older videos and seeing the progression between then and now. You seem a hell of a lot more happier now and I hope all good things keep coming for you 😊😊😊🥰🥰🥰
Steve, I was going to say you have no idea how this hit home, but you indeed do. Being without a home was and still is the most free I've ever felt. This film and Joe's music is soul searching stuff. Amazing piece, really touched my heart. Thanks ...my son actually turned me onto your work, wow!
PS. We're watching together to find the inception of Step 2.
He really related to you, the message here is priceless.
From a fan in Texas
hearing Steve cursing is great 😂 makes me realize he's not just a g-rated camping god, but just a regular guy.
This almost made me cry
Over all those long lost
Beautiful Days
Of FREEDOM...
love Ya Steve
Now great art can sometimes be very artificial, but sometimes it can be very real at other times. And this is a prime example of art being very real and down to earth but still having this ascending quality to it. In german we have a word for what you are Steve, and it's called Lebenskünstler, a life artist.
I've been watching all your vids lately and they are just so comfortable to me. You really are a person that is, in one way incredibly talented, but then again so chill as fuck, that we don't know how to react to you. You basically are a modern day Diogenes ('Get out of my sun Alexander') through and through. Your practical philosophy and authenticity are something to be cheriched. You are one of the good guys Steve, in the grand scheme of everything, and I hope you know it.
So well said.
Beautiful

Damn Steve in his day-beer drinking, stoner days... I can related in my current phase... Steve is awesome, could see myself hanging out with him in this video 😂
Been a long time fan and just watched this for the first time. I've already been on this path for a minute but I'm finally boondocking. sitting in my trailer right now just south of the Canadian border on lake Osoyoos. It was really scary at first and I felt anxious, but I found out that was because I always had to be somewhere, all my trips were one or two nights then back to work. Now that I have no where to be, nobody waiting on me, I make new friends everyday, see beautiful sights I would have never seen. Nothing like that feeling of sitting somewhere and laughing to yourself about "how the hell did I get here?". Thank you so much for the inspiration Steve.
Hope you find healing in the knowledge that you have helped people so many people overcome their fears and anxieties. I'm sure I'm not the only person you have helped, thank you.
Keep making new friends Collin.
Although you may have been free during this time, I can see in your eyes that you are a much happier man today. You have built a good life for yourself my friend and continue to do so. You should be very proud of what you have accomplished. We all look forward to your future adventures both on the new homestead as well as on the road. Cheers!
Even back in the day Steve never really showed the effects of step 2. He’s still keeping it classy. Nice
The recent vids look like they're from this guy's dad.
No kidding. The voice is the same, but most everything else is different.
Totally
Its all down hill after 30
@@harorider96 if you say so il let you know in 11 years when im 40
Lmao
This came across my feed today . I watched it thinking how awesome it was . Then you said you had meet someone and you where getting married. Now you have to say goodbye to that person . Such beautiful memories where made .Jess saw the real you . That is a beautiful thing .
Been struggling with anxiety on and off for a few years now have good and bad patches but something inside me has always said that going and spending a few months in nature and travelling would fix me up these videos make me want to get out there all the more
Dave Christiann that’s not true everyone has different triggers for their anxiety.
It worked for me, I haven't ever been this calm or self-aware. It's taken 7 months of living alone off-grid, but I spend more time interacting with my family than ever before and I keep making more friends. It's truly liberating to have this degree of independence.
The dog was the best part of this film. What an awesome dog! Now HE was enjoying his life!
@@reidsticksmorrison2652 I agree with Holly. Glad to hear he's doing well. He stole the show.
The dog running in front of the rv made me cringe so bad. Dog was seconds from death but luckily it was smart enough to avoid it.
Boondocked once on the Cambridge side of the Charles River in Boston . . . however, was tagged by transit police one morming, across the street from MIT. Got that regular demand - ' license, registration & insurance . . please ! Due to no insurance . . all my possessions were towed away, and, state of homeless was first experienced. Marched towards Cambridge center on Massachusetts Avenue, and gained a bed . . a few nights at the Salvation Army. Soon gained referral to a new facility for homeless veterans at Government Center in Boston - 'The New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans' on 17 Court St. There for a year+ however, my life stabilized !
The algorithms really do work. From all my camping videos watched, eventually I came across my first Steve video: stealth camping in the roundabout. I was like, WTF? But I loved it. He's so relatable. It cracks me up when he apologizes for cooking something you wouldn't make when "real camping". In reality, he's doing what we'd all do if we were brave enough to go and do these crazy adventures. Going to enjoy watching Steve for as long as he does this.
