Love seeing inliners doing ice skating. Had to check what temps are needed for this amazing outdoor ice track. -4C to -20C in Toronto holy shit ! Only mildly remember my last -20C more than a decade ago.
I started on ice and then went inline off seasons not long ago after ankle fractures, and the big C shutting down the rinks (I ice skate in hockey skates for fun, and am a tendy) my hip flexors I always work on for better or worse 😂, but like you mentioned in your video my hardest thing with transition to inline was the powerstop, I didn’t use my back legs edges properly or for me firmly for the longest time properly, and my upper body weight properly and I have to say thanks to your videos that’s changed dramatically! So thank you. People say inline can create ‘bad habits’ off ice- I disagree, so long as your aware of the differences and trade on and off a few times a year you’re solid. You did great for not being on ice for two years. But I like your drive to push to be better. I’m looking forward to seeing you ice more.
@@BillStoppard, that’s one of the reasons I love skating‘rockered’ on inlines. It gets me closer to the feel of hockey skates. Keep up the fight my brother
I started on ice and transitioned to roller hockey also. During a tryout I tried to do a ice stop on roller and I ate it bad 🤣🤣 but as I continued playing roller I got down the roller quick turn stop. During that tryout I was just playing hockey and didn’t even think just tried to stop like I usually did when I played ice hockey. This was all when I was a kid though. I played from 6 to 17 now I just coach my kids teams but want to play in an adult league.
I love how admittedly it is a goofy start from inline skating to ice skating and I like how you show the transition from getting a decent start to gaining confidence...😎 Too many times I feel so weird and awkward going from inline to ice skating.... This video clears up a lot of theories I had that had yet to be proven. I feel like it is one of your better videos of explaining rollerblading to ice skating... Exactly the same but different.... I too was digging too much into the ice and using the back of my foot to stop.... I will practice these techniques next time I go ice skating.... Thanks Bill!!! 😊
Glad to see you doing all the crossover skating! I "just started on ice" myself... so fun! Just learned quads last few months... Now to learn to brake like "Stop Master Stoppard" on all of the above...
Been addicted to freestyle ice skating for 3 years now:) Recently, obtained a fantastic job as a scientist in the mountains of NM with a beautiful outdoor rink. However, that means it is open only 3 months a year. As a result I picking up free ride inline skating. It has been a transition but the freedom from the rink has been eye opening. I LOVE IT! Anyhow, thank you for your videos and tutorials! They have been great source for information! Keep up the great work and be safe oot and aboot;) Cheers.
Thank you for this Bill! I went out on ice for the first time in 2 years as well and I was just awful. I tried power stopping, or even just stopping but I didn't want to hurt my ego and myself physically on the first day. I also didn't help that my skates were really dull. Like butter knife dull. Got them sharpened after the session and going back out tomorrow. I'm gonna watch this video a few more times to help build my confidence and I'm going to keep ice skating until I get it. Also, to everyone wondering yes. Staying low still applies even when on ice =)
About time! 😎 Great to see you back on the ice Bill. As a long-time ice skater who also skates inline, it always takes me time to adjust my weight placement and distribution as well for stops switching between the two. Going back to ice, it takes a while to not dig in those edges and to get my weight back on my toes. Now I need to take a day off work and go ice skating... 😁
I still don't dare the powerstop on inlines due to the friction with the surface, but on ice it's beginning to come along. Really nice feeling to control the skates better and better.
Yet another great video from one of the best city skaters ever! Thanks Bill great video and great tips in between even greater skating! Best regards from Poland! Oh and happy to see your foot is back to normal size again that video a few months ago was kinda worrying... Stay low!
Hi Big B, This was fun to watch. Boy...I haven't been on ice skates since the 90's at Harbourfront. That was a nice place to skate...a bit small though. But those cold lake effects were the worst when I was there last. I wasn't a good ice skater as a kid. Just never put the time in like all my friends did playing pick up shinny or hockey. I was always envious of good skaters. It wasn't till the 90 and I was in my 30's that inline skating took hold. I ran with it and loved being able to skate halfway decent for the first time. Then when I did try ice skating I was amazed at how good I could be...once I made the adjustments that are necessary. What a nice spot for skating you found there. Where are all the sheeple? They should be out there in droves having fun on blades. I guess there inside in front of the tv getting programmed with fear. Anyway...nice to see you outside and mask free...like it should be. Take care my skating friend.
It's crazy how people get better at ice skating by inline skating. I've felt that! Yes, the spot is gorgeous, glad to have it to myself, though it's a little worrying.
God i used to love Ice Skating as a young teen. My Bauer ice skates were my first really big purchase! Shame there isn't much chance for ice skating in Scotland. That bentway looks incredible.
Can you do a video for ice skaters who wants to learn how to powerstop on inlines? I.e. how should you translate the skills from ice skating into inlines skating? Thanks!
Power Stops Ice skates: drive through the camber of the blade nearer the front. Don't drive through the heel as it will dig in. Inline skates: drive through the heel to start the slide.
Awesome video. I am hooked on ice skating, but man is it tough to learn coming from a non skating background. Have you tried Marsblades yet? That would be very interesting to hear your feedback on them.
yeah that inline habit to stop with the deep tilt of skates really corrupts my ice skating. I ice skate on a small lake nearby and think that i will go under the ice someday cutting to deep into the surface. Other from that skating on metal baldes after the wheels make me feel so much lighter. The jumps on ice skates are like flying, i'm really surprised that we don't yet have the highjump discipline on ice.
I find going from inline to ice makes my glutes ache for a few weeks until I get used to it again. Nice drifting hockey stop there, very smooth. Would love to have a go on that track though for sure, we obviously have nothing like this in London.
This might be a stupid question but where does the ice come from? It's so smooth. Is that normal? I live in Australia. Never seen ice like that outdoors.
Just started ice skating after having only done some inline as a kid and again recently. On inline, I was able to do powerstops from the start on the first try. On ice, I can't even make snow at a stand still as the edges feel like they're dug in just way too much.
Looks like a riot, is that public free access? Keep using hire skates whenever I go to my local rink but never truly happy with the experience knowing how to skate but not feeling like or confident enough to use my full (not however comprehensive) skill base. Think I need to pull the trigger on a pair of my own.
I can do a one foot stop from any speed on my front foot on ice and a powerslide transition into a fast slide on inlines, but all these years skating and it still hasn't clicked for me on how to control the inner foot on the outside edge. Every time I tried I ended up in bruises for weeks 😂
In austsralia, so learned to inline first, there aren't loads of rinks here (they're expensive to run and the sports aren't big enough to fund them well.) Going from inline's on your heals and large motions with angled wheels to learning to stop on ice was so strange. Now i find if im regularly switching between them i can do both okay (I play hockey with both). but if I go too long one and not the other my legs do funny things. Too long no Ice? my pivots have my heals to far down I clip them and fall over. My turns want to dig my heels in way to hard and i grind the shit out of the ice and don't make nice turns. Too long no Inline? I want to skate backwardws and squeeze to slow myself down which doesn't gracefully slow down it either bites and trips or does nothing and im rolling backwards and 100Km/h with legs spread. Last thing i need to do is get comfortable in backwards crossovers on ice, it just doesn't feel as flowy or as natural as it does on wheels. Love your stuff. Thanks for the vids.
I've ice skated over many years and have no problem with parallel stop as we use to call them, including using only the rear skate. However I can't for the life of me stop on inline skates they just seem to grip to well.
This really demistified the stop on ice for me. I have nice Bauers but only go like once a year and just hadn't yet figured out how to get it at high speed.
You don't quite have the same spring in your skate as you did a few years back when you were skating on the frozen waves at the lake. I fear that age is slowly clawing away at your once vibrant stride. This saddens me :(

Had to check what temps are needed for this amazing outdoor ice track. -4C to -20C in Toronto holy shit ! Only mildly remember my last -20C more than a decade ago.
This was -20 and the wind was intense. I was a bit shocked on day 1.

I started inline first but fell in love with ice skating more entirely because of the stopping glide.
