Have you ever checked out the Olympus XA? Its a tiny rangefinder camera, with an almost silent shutter. It's also all black and very incognito and very, very small. Also has a lovely lens and short throw on the rangefinder, or just set hyperfocal and treat like a point and shoot. The shutter button is very light tough, so you can shoot easily at slower speeds.

    • @ribsy

I have! Well I know of it, but never used one. I’m def considering getting a small point and shoot style. That one is a nice hybrid

    • @MsElleBee

@@ribsy Its a really cool camera. In fact, all the XA's (with the exception of the XA1) are great. XA2/3 are three zone focus, so really easy to use and the XA4 has a 28mm close-focus lens on it. I went back to the UK this time last year visiting family and the XA was the only camera that I took with me on the trip. It was more than enough to be honest. Load it with either black and white or color or slide -- you'll get really good results.

@@MsElleBee the XA is definitely a little beast for street shooting. Sharp and contrasty 35mm 2.8 lens. I set mine to f16 and 9 feet. The DOF at these settings is huge.

Yeah man. Looking forward to shooting street with you man. If you can shoot street in Brixton comfortably, you can shoot anywhere haha. When I feel uncomfortable and shy, I go ahead and take the shot anyway and just pause with my camera to my face. Most of the time they think I’m still framing and they walk on and don’t say anything, but that level of comfort shooting takes a bit of time.

If you want wider focal length lenses for the Canon 7 without paying for expensive wide angle LTM lenses, you can use the "Canon Mount Converter B". It allows you to mount inexpensive and readily available Canon FD lenses on the Canon 7 with infinity focus. This opens up a huge range of lenses like the 24mm, 28mm which you can zone focus with more depth of field for street.

Curious what you think is a good lens for street? 50mm you have distance with your subject but you don’t have that inmate closeness in photos. Or you think something around 24/28mm? Or 35mm which almost everyone uses. Just curious 🧐!? Lol thanks awesome video 👏🏼

If you want to shoot totally inconspicuously, on top of shooting from your chest, you can use your left hand, casually covering the camera, while taking a shot with the palm of your (left) hand. It isn't hard to do, it's even easier if you have soft release button added to your shutter button (it makes it easier to reach with your palm).

Welcome to the world of street photography bruh! You'll develop your flow and style in time. No need to rush. You're coming into it at a very strange time given the impact COVID-19 is having on the world not to mention the UK. That said, you will learn more about light and shadow than you've ever known by shooting street. Very different than shooting in a studio setting where you can control the light and how it behaves. You seem to have a good crew there in London. Put those guys to work. I'm from Harlem, so you know we got a different flow in NYC but that flow has to be fluid it because the Bruce Gilden approach to street photography doesn't work everywhere in the world. 🤣🤣🤣

Lately when I've been out shooting even if I'm not shooting images of people I get these paranoid individuals that break out their phones and start videoing me lol. I was shooting some images of this cool looking stair case on the side of this warehouse the other day and one of the employees came out and started standing in my shot holding his phone up videoing me (so I got a shot of him too lol) then a number of employees started peaking out the door like I was doing something illegal. I was simply shooting an image of a building from a public street. Then yesterday I pulled my car over and I was sitting waiting for someone to move away from a subject I wanted to shoot and she saw my camera so then she broke out her phone and started videoing me because she assumed I was sneaking pictures of her LOL. This seems to be a relatively new phenomena that I haven't really experienced until recently. I give big props to those who can do blatant street photos and don't care about the reaction. It's getting tougher these days I think.
