CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Kirk (William Shatner) and Chang (Christopher Plummer) do battle as Chang quotes iconic Shakespeare.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The plot involves a peace conference between the Federation of Planets and the troublesome Klingons. The Klingons are hoping to perform a little damage control after triggering a mining disaster on one of their moons; their spokesman is the seemingly contrite General Chang (Christopher Plummer). All negotiations abruptly cease when a Klingon vessel is attacked, and Capt. Kirk (William Shatner) and Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) are accused of the crime. As they stand trial for murder, Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and Vulcanian trainee Lt. Valeris (Kim Cattrall) try to locate the real culprits. It turns out that Kirk and McCoy are victims of a conspiracy to foment further hostilities between the Good Guys and the Klingons.

Wow, after all the many times I've watched this movie, I've never noticed that. The torpedo is launched, Chang stands, the other Klingon stands too. It hearkens back to the line earlier in the movie. "Better to die on a our feet, than live on our knees". They certainly mean it. This is why Nicholas Meyer is a great writer, little moments like this.
"I am as constant as the Northern Star..." Well, Caesar was killed shortly after he said that.

I remember seeing this in theaters when I was younger. At the end, when the Enterprise and Excelsior opened up and started pounding that Bird of Prey with torpedoes, people started cheering and clapping.

Christopher Plummer’s “cry havoc,” is one of the franchise’s iconic lines.
You can say that about pretty much everything that he says in this movie.
What Mark Antony said upon seeing Cesar assassinated. Basically, saying should I walk away and not say what I have seen? Or cry HAVOC! And let slip the dogs of war?

I love McCoy yelling "WE'VE GOT A HEARTBEAT!" -- about a torpedo.
Logical for both Spock and McCoy to be working on it as because of Spock sharing his Katra with McCoy, McCoy now had Spock's technical knowledge.
The main thing I love about these final scenes is that each character has a significant role in them:
Kirk: Leads the crew
Spock: Makes the plan on how to track Chang's ship
Uhura: Mentions rather mundane equipment that'll actually track the ship
Bones: Modifies a torpedo with Spock
Chekov: Fires the torpedo
Scooty: Stops the assassin down on Khitomer
Sulu: Provides back-up to his former crew
Took me years to notice this and it truly showcases how well the characters clicked
Even how Excelsior backs up Enterprise in destroying the Bird of Prey.
That's one of the reasons I loved Nicholas Meyer as a director. He knew how to make these characters feel like they were needed to run this ship. It wasn't just two hours of Kirk saving the galaxy.
Sulu's line about "fly her apart then" was epic to me too. He absolutely refused to leave them to their death
No OTHER crew in Star Trek has had that Chemistry NUFF SAID @@@!!!!!
I love how the Excelsior took some hits to give time for them to modify the torpedo.
No doubt one of the best Trek movies ever made.
It's only fault is that it's the last one.

I never understood why it was that we could see the photon torpedoes coming out of an invisible point of space but a state of the art 24th century starship with a mega computer and targeting systems that the US air force could only dream about , just was not able to fire back until they saw a big explosion. 😮😮

"To be, or not, to be" is still one of my favorite final lines uttered by any Star Trek villain. Plumber delivers it with such finality, with hints of pride and shock. Once he realizes that the torpedo is going to hit, he doesn't cry out in rage or terror, he simply accepts the fact that Kirk has outsmarted him, stands to his feet with the rest of his crew and accepts his death.

First Star Trek scene I've witnessed the whole audience hooting and hollering due to Chang getting HIS. Great, great movie memory.
Kirk is only as good as the quality of his villain opponents. Christopher Plummer was marvelous.

And Chang took it like a noble Klingon warrior would, stood up, didn't tell evasive or anything, no honor lost being bested by Kirk and his crew and the Enterprise. Enterprise took some shots that would have destroyed others, but she gave it back too

2:02 Awesome explosion of the Bird-of-Prey. It's too bad they re-used it again in the next movie Star Trek: Generations.
Andrew Chapman it totally took me out of the moment for Generations to the p point that this many years later, it's still a major distraction to the conclusion of Generations.
Not only did they re-use the shot, but they re-used the whole idea of the Klingons seeing the torpedo come at them.

Bones and Spock give best one line quotes in the best possible ways in this scene. I also love the way Bones says "This is fun" in the beginning of Chang's attack.

This movie is one of my favorite Star Trek along with Wrath of Khan
Both directed by Nicholas Meyer, who Rodenberry despised.
Of all 6 of Star Trek Movies involving Shatner-Nimoy-Kelley etc, this was my favorite. The ending was especially thrilling. Some of my favorite quotes are here: "Cry havoc!! etc."
Seconds later, lunatic Chang spouts, "I am as constant as The Northern Star!! (Why didn't he say 'North Star?')" And the always sarcastic Bones comes back brilliantly with, "I'd pay real money if he'd shut up!!" Which is exactly what he and Spock do .. forever ... when they send Chang a special gift .. the torpedo.
Probably the best Trek film but you forgot to mention one of the best lines in the movie. "Sir we'll fly her apart"

They could have probably gone to warp, or at least did a short, emergency warp-jump. Anything but take a torpedo in the face.
177SCmaro a cloking device requires massive amounts of energy. Same reason shields can't be put up. Same reason you can't engage any form of warp. They might have temporarily dodged it at impulse but then the torpedo would have come around again. It's literally following their engine exhaust which the ship emits while stationary or at impulse.
Christopher Plummer did a superb job in his role as the Klingon Captain. What a varied acting career. He will be missed.

This is just one of the absolute best scenes in star trek imo. The enterprise doing the torpedo surgery with sulu racing in to back up his old m8s and then joining in with the salvo- and the way it immediately cuts to Sulu to show you he wasnt wasting even a single moment before he could jump in

Say what you will about Shatner...but the man had iconic line delivery down....that fire is equal parts epic and hilarious. Also, it is no wonder this and Wrath of Khan are probably the 2 best Star Trek movies.

I saw Star Trek Vi at the Grauman Chinese Theatre in Hollywood with my parents. I was celebrating my 25th. Birthday at the time and going to see the movie was my present from my parents. When this scene came, the whole theater erupted and applauded. It was awesome!!! Very few films have achieved this feat and I have been lucky to be at some of them.
Hate that Shatner and Takei got crossways, but together they pulled off a great scene here. Love this..."Fire!" Two Starships with all that firepower making short work of an enemy ship. Great Star Trek moment!

I agree, watching those signatures during the credit roll really made me feel like I was watching the end of an era. In my mind, then and now, that was the 'happily ever after' to the crew of the original series.

What separates an ok Star Trek villain from a great one is the ability to quote the classics while engaging the heroes.

RIP Christopher Plummer, William Shatner knew him very well as he was his understudy at the Canadian Royal Shakespeare Company and that Mr Plummer was a mad Star Trek fan he used to watch it in the late sixties when he lived here in England.

Really loved Chang as a villain. Watching this as a child, he really stood out in a classy way. First time seeing this in over 20 years and just realising that it’s the amazing Christopher Plummer playing the role.

At 1:49, Chang should invoke the closing words -- amended slightly -- of every Laugh In episode. Say goodnight, Chang! (Chang replies ...) "Goodnight, Chang!!"
I love this part especially before were Spock to bones "Care to help modification of a torpedo" or to that effect. Plummer was awesome as the Kilngon captain

Such gr8 acting by the original Star Trek cast members. Never again....sad. People today don't realize how really good these actors and actresses we're, doing intangible roles regarding space. LEGENDARY ACTORS AND ACTRESSES!!!

The reception dinner between the Klingons and the Enterprise officers has to be added to the list of great scenes in this movie. Kirk's anger at Spock for committing him to escort Gorkon is another one.

You're absolutely right- and I believe there is no comparison between the two, although having each of the actors "sign off" with their autographs before the credits reminded me that I was watching the finale of something great. A wonderful company of players. . A great Sci Fi series.
