Left the last day by a devine mircale as I didnt own a vehicle but I thank the lord I was able to evacuate with my sister, her boyfriend, 4 cats and a dog. 18 hours to Houston Texas. Katrina changed everything.

I remember all too well, sitting in that traffic. It took us 10 hours to get to Jackson, Ms. THEN they steered us back to Northern La. Took us 15 hours to get to Monroe, La., via Jackson. UGH! Sure glad we did get the hell out of there.

It wasn't just New Orleans that was like this, but the entire Gulf Coast. I live in Gulfport, MS, and we left our house at 1 P.M. the day before Katrina hit. At 4 o'clock we had just made it to Pascagoula 30 miles east.

Absolutely, the entire Gulf Coast: I am a long time Moss Point, Mississippi resident...my first hurricane was camille in 1969...

My daughter and I did not evacuate, last time the traffic was so bad so we decided to stay in my house in biloxi, it was scary, boards flying off my windows and roof ripping off, new orleans did not get the brunt of the storm , the levees just didn't hold is why it flooded so bad.

Wow, I hope New Orleans has learned from the Hurricane Katrina disaster and created a much needed evacuation plan. Thanks for posting

Build a BUG OUT BAG - be prepared and learn from this amazing footage, Remember a motorcycle is the best means to escape in a city setting. Remember these people had over 5 days to pack up and leave, but yet look at all the people who waited till the last minute, and the thousands who didn't even bother to leave...
    Learn from these mistakes...

many pepole did not evacuate because some do not have a car, live below the poverty line, or because of a disability

Here's my dumb question. I know they use that lane reversal to get people out of the city quicker, but when the evacuees get to the end of the contraflow, where they won't be allowed to continue outbound on normally inbound lanes, how do officials deal with getting all the traffic back onto normally operating roads?
