  • Here is a third video I recorded of the Seamus Rafter Commemoration 1918-2018 in Ballindaggin Village Enniscorthy Co.Wexford back on Wednesday Evening 12th September 2018. Members of the the Rafter family, including Seamus' nephew and namesake Seamus Rafter and niece Mary Rafter, proudly formed a through the village along with the Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Group, Monageer Volunteer Group and the renowned Ballindaggin Pipe Band. Seamus Rafter addressed the assembled crowd on the life and times of his uncle [at his grave in Ballindaggin Cemetery] and the pivotal role he played in the cultural and political landscape across County Wexford. His pivotal role in the 1916 Rising and taking over the Athenaeum in the Enniscorthy was particularly noteworthy, it being the bastion to fall and only when direct orders from Padraig Pearse were received.** [Parish Priest Fr. Jim Fegan read the prayers and Historian Michael Fortune gave a speech and] there was the most beautiful sunset on the evening as the proceedings came to a conclusion with a performance of a lament simply called 'Seamus Rafter' by Aileen Lambert and a performance from the Ballindaggin Pipe Band.
