Just an odd history fun fact: hitler once recieved severe chemical damage for this exact reason. His mustache was compromising the seal. And this is when his iconic mustache was born
Just a 'small' tip. Crushing up the activated carbon in a motar'npestle or ball mill would yield a higher surface area of carbon and thus end up being more effective in filtration
The important surface area of the pellets is actually in the micropores and internal surfaces of the activated charcoal pellets, which can have anywhere from 300 to 1200 square meters of surface area per gram of pellets (the weight of a paper clip) (Source: "Transport Processes and Separation Process Principles" by Geankoplis). That means an amount of activated carbon weighing as much as 5 to 16 paper clips would have about the internal surface area of a football field. Each square nanometer of that football field could catch a molecule of spray. That's about 1% of a mole of spray molecules, but that's a conservative estimate. If you want to recharge the activated carbon, heating it up allows the adsorbed material to escape, thus preparing it to adsorb again. Just don't be nearby when the stuff comes out of your carbon. Maybe use a solar oven to heat it outside... On a windy day. Hopefully it releases slowly. Chemical engineering is a fun field :).
I am genuinely impressed at how well those worked, well done guys! I thought I would point out that one of the reasons military regulations insist that soldiers stay clean shaven is so that gas masks will create a total seal with their face. Civilians with beards are advised to either store an electric razor with their gas masks, or a large container of Vaseline. There is an Israeli company that makes gas masks for dogs, and in their instructions they say to shave/ trim all of the hair around the dog's neck where the mask will be creating a seal. As an action medic with a fair deal of field experience volunteering at political events where mace is often used - there are urban legends that need to be cleared up around maalox as treatment for OC. It *is* a useful tool when applied properly. It is *not* a miracle cure and should *not* be taken as a substitute for other treatment. Liquid antacid solution provides fast-acting but *temporary* pain relief from OC. It does *not* permanently denature capsaicin, nor will it remove it from your skin any more effectively than ordinary water. Liquid antacid solution should only be used for immediate pain relief before removing the OC resin with grease-cutting soap (If available; if not, with liberal amounts of clean water) as quickly as possible. Too many people assume that they're fine after applying maalox then wind up in even worse pain when it wears off and the OC has had time to work into their pores, at which point it's nearly impossible to wash off.

Ya, I thought they were going to grind the charcoal, makes more surface area for chemicals to bond with. And also use a better filter then cotton, like HEPA filters or even coffee filters.
Also you could probably make a even better gas mask with a halloween mask or a modified scuba mask and a plastic water bottle so you can take the top off
First off, huge fan. Second, damn good masks. Third is a couple of tips from research and a couple of people I know who've experimented with similar things: - Surgical sponges allow a better freedom of airflow while maintaining the padding effect. - The less movement from the charcoal the better, though a dense pack is obviously going to restrict flow. - Unless you have a baby-face (I say this as a fellow of the bearded brotherhood) then nothing short of a full head mask is going to provide a full seal.
I think it would be more practical if you used the lid of the charcoal container as the top filter and every time you change the charcoal, you just poke a few holes on the bottom of the container and screw it on the mask?
Why not just get the cotton covered in activated charcoal dust? Or, you could make a powder into a kind of mud with a little water, and then soak the cotton in the dust to impregnate the dust in the charcoal.
They're already using cotton. I'm saying that they could have powdered the charcoal into dust, and dunk the cotton into the dust. That'll help with the surface area issue.
"You're figuring the more you're breathing through the better, right?" "Uh, yeah and-" I'll never get over the fact that Jason didn't get to finish his statement
I used several large rockstar energy drink cans (with the resealable lids) for my filters. and used an old (and clean) vacuum cleaner hose to attach the filters to onto a carry case/satchel
Another way, to improve design would be, to create separate exhaling hole, to make breathing easier and to prevent re breathing of carbon dioxide. Basically, you could do it by cutting a hole in the mask and seal it with a peace of balloon rubber, from outside. So, the rubber flap seals the hole when inhaling and opens when exhaling(just like regular gas masks).
3rdHalf the king of random has a video about making a one way valve using a marble and PVC pipe with a rubber gasket that the marble falls on top of.. I think it would be alot more sturdy then a rubber flap. Shit if I was designing a really nice mask I would use the solid state tesla one way valve, then you would not hear the flaps or whatever opening and closing and there would be no points of failure.
@@carolynmmitchell2240 The tesla valve only makes flow slower in the other direction, but doesn't stop it. You have to have moving parts if you're dealing with, say, phosgene. Though, I wouldn't trust a homemade gas mask with protecting me from an acutely poisonous gas anyway...

Brillant! I love this video; however I would have done it slightly different. I would have used powered activated charcoal mixed with water containing colliodal silver. Next I would have saturated cotton gauze in the mixture and hanged it up to allow to dry. Then I would have layered the infused gauze in the can. I believe you hearing the pellets rattling is an indication that you were creating large enough gaps for a small amount of gas to rush pass the pellets unimpeded. The colloidal silver should keep the gauze sterile while drying and give you added protection from biological warfare as well.
i bet 100 dollars that these two will at least have 1.5 mio subs on december 1st 2017 every video i watched i found awesome! its allready one of my favourite channels. greetings from Austria
needs an exhale valve (a woopy cushion flap should work for this, also needs a valve for the intake) also crushing up the charcoal (this will require a better particulate filter on top and bottom) and making a larger filter can for more surface area and ease of breathing.
Fun fact, tear gas can't be used in warfare as it is deemed a chemical weapon and so is unethical. However it is perfectly legal to be used against protesting civilians. Sound about right to me?
Michael Edlin The reason it's vanned in warfare, because the rules were made EXTREMELY general on PURPOSE. They know that if the rules were too specific, then there may have been technicalities that were legal, but against the idea of the law. (ex. a liquid that turned into gas after exposure to hot climate, that contained unconventional toxins, like red phosphate. Would be just as legal as this tear gas, but a mich deadlier effect on the soldiers.)
Michael Edlin I suppose it's a counter to the popular argument against the 2nd Ammendment right to bear arms. "They didn't know we would have these types of weapons".
the problem is that you forgot to pad the charcoal down. When you breathe in, the charcoal "dances around", and that is bad because now your airflow is bigger in between the pellets because of the bigger spaces between the pellets. That is also why it works better when you inhale slowly, because the pellets arent dancinng around so much
The important surface area of the pellets is actually in the micropores and internal surfaces of the activated charcoal pellets, which can have anywhere from 300 to 1200 square meters of surface area per gram of pellets (the weight of a paper clip) (Source: "Transport Processes and Separation Process Principles" by Geankoplis). They walked in when the tear gas had allready been dispersed and when they had the door open. That is not a control test. They need to be in there with the door closed and with a new can.
Michael Crosby It's good enough when, even after most of the gas has been vented, they still couldn't enter the room without the gas masks. That's a very legit control.
Certainly not tangible for thermonuclear war or intense radiation. Or even nerve gas or probably bugs too. But for tear gas and pepperspray it seems to keep them stable enough to fight the worst of its effects
another thing is to use two filters, try doing two cans with one on each cheek, even more stuff to filter, and more clean-ish oxygen to breath, as well as putting in an exhale port that way you can breath EVEN easier
Trying to breathe in, while covering the the vent on the filtration cannister, was how we checked for a proper seal on our gasmask in boot camp. If it sucked down onto your face, you knew you had a good fit and a proper seal... Then they made us take it off in a room filled with CS gas!

The colloidal silver should keep the gauze sterile while drying and give you added protection from biological warfare as well.
i bet 100 dollars that these two will at least have 1.5 mio subs on december 1st 2017
every video i watched i found awesome! its allready one of my favourite channels.
greetings from Austria
oh, man... I'd love for that to be the case.
Kann echt gut sein, dass der Channel richtig hochgeht.
Der Content is wirklich gut und bespaßend! :D

You know hes probably right.
Its pretty high quality and likeable.

I dont get it
Update: watched the show. Get it now lmao
needs an exhale valve (a woopy cushion flap should work for this, also needs a valve for the intake) also crushing up the charcoal (this will require a better particulate filter on top and bottom) and making a larger filter can for more surface area and ease of breathing.
inb4 someone pokes eyeholes in the mask.
The charcoal filters were gas mask used in WW1, you would have a large can with the charcoal with a tube connected to the mask
Fun fact, tear gas can't be used in warfare as it is deemed a chemical weapon and so is unethical. However it is perfectly legal to be used against protesting civilians. Sound about right to me?
more like riot mob tbh, even rubber bullet is still hurt a lot and can be lethal at close range. blank ammo still hurt a lot tho.
That makes sense actually! Still a bit weird the whole concept of it, but that would explain it
Michael Edlin
I suppose it's a counter to the popular argument against the 2nd Ammendment right to bear arms. "They didn't know we would have these types of weapons".
used in Syria recently
the problem is that you forgot to pad the charcoal down. When you breathe in, the charcoal "dances around", and that is bad because now your airflow is bigger in between the pellets because of the bigger spaces between the pellets. That is also why it works better when you inhale slowly, because the pellets arent dancinng around so much
Tips:
Crush the charcoal
Use more
Compress it a little better with cotton
Reduce the number of holes
Use a layering in between
shave the beards
Beard don't need shaving. Just get a rubber diving mask it seals on that. Rubber on rubber is better than rubber on skin. Look it up

Shouldn't you be using carbon powder instead of pellets?
Wouldn't the powder fall through the air holes?
Jacob Andrews Don't know about this setup. Powder is usually preferred due to it's larger surface area -> it works as a better filter.
Maybe you could press it into a tissue or something
Large grain powder in a fine mesh would probably work.
Thanks, guys! Nothing adds more to my wholesome house than the Fox Five Point Three tactical pepper spray grenades.
to do a control test, you need to be in their without the homemade gas mask.
their
Michael Crosby at the end
They walked in when the tear gas had allready been dispersed and when they had the door open. That is not a control test. They need to be in there with the door closed and with a new can.
Michael Crosby It's good enough when, even after most of the gas has been vented, they still couldn't enter the room without the gas masks. That's a very legit control.
They mentioned videos of other people being sprayed with the gas in the open. That is enough of a control, if you believe that such things happened.
Consider also crushing those charcoal pellets a bit to increase their individual surface area, and reduce the airspace between the pellets.
well i new it wasnt going to perfect but i would rather have one of them than nothing

OuijaXIII Same.
Did you ever see the RTAA boiling gasoline video? It was a story about finding the cookbook as a kid.
Lucky
@@teamcybr8375 I did. The guy was named Burnie and he was trying to make Napalm if I remember correctly.
@@MLGRDR Yep. Burnie Burns.
wait. thats illegal
You need to have the activated charcoal very fine and compact to prevent the chemicals from slipping through, an exhale valve could help as well
How to tell if it’s compact enough is checking if you can hear it clanking in the filter
the exhale breaths seemed to flow out over the cheekbones rather well... as soon as we started inhaling, the seal would re-establish nicely.
looks like they are trying to make a homemade fallout shelter
heh. it eventually became a chicken coop, but I see what you're putting down.
try using Gauze Bandage with smaller pieces of charcoal.
Certainly not tangible for thermonuclear war or intense radiation. Or even nerve gas or probably bugs too. But for tear gas and pepperspray it seems to keep them stable enough to fight the worst of its effects
I don't remember this episode of breaking bad
thanks for putting the ad at the end of the video
7:29 When tha squad hotbox
Improvement for the gasmasks grind up the pellets increases surface area. Could work
2:19 is now my desktop background.
another thing is to use two filters, try doing two cans with one on each cheek, even more stuff to filter, and more clean-ish oxygen to breath, as well as putting in an exhale port that way you can breath EVEN easier
Hey you messed up you should crush the charcoal so there is more surface area to obsorbe
that might block the air flow..
The reason I said to crush the charcoal was to add surface area to bond to but the blocking airflow thing may be a slight problem

"Feel like I'm about to commit a murder" how far you two have come
-Hong Kong protesters: *IS IT POSSIBLE TO LEARN THIS POWER?*
Tear gas is a particulate, activated carbon (charcoal) is used against vaipour like chlorine gas so that explains the result
Didn't you do this on hacking the system
Love how this is on my recommended during a pandemic. We need face masks but gas masks still work.
10:06 when somebody lights a cigarette next to me.
Trying to breathe in, while covering the the vent on the filtration cannister, was how we checked for a proper seal on our gasmask in boot camp. If it sucked down onto your face, you knew you had a good fit and a proper seal... Then they made us take it off in a room filled with CS gas!

I really like your videos. I also like the card tricks
awesome!
The Modern Rogue wow. I remeber you :D hello
If u thin the 1st layer some more and add a thin layer on top it works better because the charcoal doesnt move
Holy shit how have I not found you sooner 😂 you plus the guy from scam school is the best combo!

BRIAN!!!!! I just finished reading all of the current books in the Gentleman Bastards series (the first book is the Lies of Locke Lamora) and it is my favorite book series I have ever read and you are in for a real rollercoaster. HAVE A GREAT TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
imagine someone in hong kong sees this
here i am, but the police updated there tear gas by importing it from china, so the mask is a bit useless now
You should retry this, but with the cotton pad on top taped into place. It could help with the filtering and movement of the Activated cotton.

Yo Shwood and Murphy. One thing I dug is that antacid is completely ineffective against pepper spray of any grade, because the burning is not caused by a acid compound (ergo capsaicin not being an acid). Your best is something that can dissolve fat soluble substances, like veggie oils or milk.
