Hi America. I'm a 1st year Med student! (oh gosh! it feels so weird to say it!) I'm from Portugal, but from what I gather, european countries work a little different from the US. Here on a doctor is "on call" it means that he/she is working for 24h straight on the emergency unit (because we don't have a specialty called "Emergency Medicine" - we have a general emergency unit that is subdivided into Surgery, Trauma, Medicine, Small surgery, ortho, etc. Basically, every doctor from every specialty has to be working for 24h straight (sometimes a bit more) doing emergency cases, so you're pretty much working the entire time, unless it is a slower day. For instance, my husband is an anesthesiologist, so when he's on call he only does emergency surgery (most for out-hospital patients that come into the ER). Being on call in the US means that you take care of patients on the wards at night, admit patients from the ER and perform emergency cases ?? Do you answer calls from other specialties for patients who need medication, for instance? Do more vlogs :D!
