This is taken from my Star Trek The Next Generation Moments project that I'm working on. The project will show the best of STNG in a series of memorable moments from each episode. Still have some work to do on it, see what you thank.
But please watch it from my STNG Moments Playlist, that way you can see each episode as they are meant to be seen.
• TNG Moments Season One
Summery.
Episode : 10 Q returns to the Enterprise to tempt Commander Riker into joining the Q Continuum with the lure of the Q's powers.
"Oh, your species is always suffering and dying." ROFL
the new always strong JJ Abrams movies star trek intodarkness
"always conflict, no matter the era"
LOL
2020:
"Is it that which concerns you?"
I got the chills, man
Interestingly enough one can interpret Q's action to be that of a frustrated parent dealing with their teenage child who had a taste of independence and can not yet comprehend real life as the parent does.
Interesting if you consider the possibility that this Q is the deification of the human race and that the Q collective is the collection of all the species that passed the deification phase.
As in the final stage of evolution for a species is becoming a God-like entity and the Q collective is the collection of these entities that constitute a race of their own. Q breeding/procreation is probably an euphemism for new species evolving into existence, since they exist outside our spacetime continuem they would not be constrained with linear causality (as Q loves to rub in Picard's face all the time)
@@tuqann exactly. Early Picard is extremely Smug and naive and corny and confident. Yet starfleet doesn't even know about the existence of the borg and the dominion. That's why Q thinks the humans are delusional and funny
You can see Q becoming genuinely angry there for first time. Good stuff.
Humans are gonna have to survive the ruthless hegemonic galactic Gangsters like the borg and the dominion before they can ever dream of becoming gods on par with the Q. "There are levels to this"
The federation was teetering on the brink of destruction against the dominion
That bit at the end was brilliant. I liked how Q threw the book at Picard when he suggested that Q's objection to Humanity was that they might one day become equal to Q...
The action of a child throwing a tantrum. Akin to a certain man who "occupies" the White House in Washington D. C. At the moment.
@@ginnyjollykidd Yes or many men and women to be exact, but it's the common actions of the ignorant, elderly or young, to ascribe those traits on a single person when an entire group is guilty.
@@ginnyjollykidd One might even call that honest, as opposed till waiting for the cameras to be off to reveal a persons true nature. Like some past "Occupants".

I'll survive. I always do. Middle and old age is not for the faint-of-heart, so to speak. But you build stamina no matter who's in office. And each to their own gifts. Including Q, who is quite the blowhard and blusterer.
We people want the same things in life. We only have different ideas how to do it. Love and
Peace.
lol yeah good luck beating Patrick Stewart in shakespeare plays
Larry Olivier
well if you count dead people you might as well say william shakespeare himself :p
but you're right olivier might have beaten steward lol
Pimsleurable I have the 1948 version of "Hamlet" on DVD.
“Games?! did someone say games?”
“To the game!”
Q should have saved that book for Worf! I don't believe he's eaten any good books lately! :-P
You don't think that Worf devours culture?
No books for Worf until he takes a bath
Worf has probably seen Hamlet in the original Klingon.
Riker: "We don't have time for this games!"
Q: "Games?! Did someone said games!?"
Me: Oh crap Riker! You are giving him ideas!
I was amazed that Worf restrained himself from kicking Q's ass after he became mortal. lol
Who says he didn't kick his ass? I'm sure Picard would have looked the other way
I certainly would have cracked up especially if it were Guinan who beat the crap out of him.
Dom Oranzi
Guinan, albeit not in front of Picard, stabbed Q in the hand with a fork when he became mortal. lol
I'm amazed that's _all_ she did!
Worf is, after all, an excellent Starfleet officer.
This is one of my favorite scenes in all of TNG. The chemistry between these two, even here in the early years, was Gold. Add in Stewart's poetic mind and his love of Shakespeare, and the scenes are epic.
Dude, Q is the greatest character in sci-fi, theres no one that compares. Who would have thought that an invincible, omnipotent god of all reality and time/space would be so damn interesting.
Q is but Mark Twains, "Curious Stranger"
they nerfed him in the end :/
and hilarious! (: ))
@@user-jo5fq5ln5c they nerfed him in the woke ds9, and yes ds9 is the star trek discovery of its time
You can't take your eyes off him. Every time he visits, it's gonna be a great episode. It's crazy that he was only on about 7 total TNG episodes. Just a handful. But had this massive impact
3:10 That smile on Q, priceless.
This was my first TNG episode in 1987. I fell in love with it instantly.
Trippy, I was working my first miserable job .🤣
I like Riker's attitude at the start of this clip- one of my big issues with the Q episodes was that the cast would never just unwind and go with the flow. There's NOTHING you can do against a being as powerful as Q, so instead of getting high-handed with him and antagonising him, why not just go with the flow, play along? Riker here was at least willing to admit that, under less urgent circumstances, he might find Q amusing.
John de Lancie is such a brilliant actor! I wish we would see more of him on film and stage. He clearly honed his acting skills on all of the classical plays. Did he go to Julliard? Bravo, Q!
Never quote Shakespeare to Picard.
"Games..!? Did someone say GAAAMES!?" He's biting hard at the scenery and refusing to let go like a playful dog. Love it :D
Actually, Q has a point. If Shakespeare had been alive then, he probably would say 'galaxy'!!
It would be funny if that was just an improv from Patrick correcting John considering Patrick's background in Shakespeare.
All the Universe is a stage . . . Galaxy is so . . . small
@@t00by00zer cosmos
2:00. He's like Sméagol. "GAMES!? Oh, we love games, doesn't we, Precious?! Does it like games? Does it? Does it? Does it like to play?!"
And if we win-we eats it, my precious!!😂😂
😂😂😂😂
That was one the most beautiful lines in star trek
Where Picard answers back with Hamlet
Seized my vessle, ... Seized my vessle.. 😂😂
Brilliant piece of acting from both of them. God I loved this show!!!!
When Q left after Picard quoted Shakespeare at him, that's the only time the "Q flash" doesn't just have the high-pitched whine, but also has a slight rumble and crackle, like thunder close by.
It strikes me as if he "slammed the door" as he left, which makes this the only time Q was angry with Picard.
Q deserved to get his own spin-off Star Trek series. It would have been fascinating and entertaining watching him meddling, manipulating, scheming and aggravating the Federation, Starfleet, the Klingons, Romulans, Vulcans and all the other humanoid species in the Trek universe. Q would have been the ultimate cosmic joker and stirrer because he detested boredom, rules, routine, monotony and anything that wasn't fun for him.
"Q deserved to get his own spin-off Star Trek series."
Well he kind of did: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/8a/Star_Trek_Borg_cover.jpg
But what is an 'interactive movie'? Is that like a modern-day 'Choose Your Own Adventure' game?
I wish Star Trek:TNG would have made a whole movie around Q ! ... may be in the new Picard series.
The Vulcans would too boring for Q - the Romulans too dangerous! If Q gave one of them the power of Q, they would use it to give all Romulans that power, hunt down all Q, take their power and wipe them out!
Nah. More like a Star Trek video game.
Picard struck a nerve. :)
It was like Kirk with Trelane!
@@crystalidentity
And I found out Gene Roddenberry did indeed base Q on the character Trelane.
Sisko just punched his face instead and he never came back. Picard should’ve done that lmao.
The last one from Picard was right into his face
Q is like a fly Picard always wants to swat..🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
0:33 - "Oh your species is always suffering and dying." He's got a point there. Especially to someone like him that can remember the entirety of human history in one small corner of his memory. 3:15 - With all of Patrick Stewart's experience on the stage, he could probably recite a great portion of that book Q is holding from memory. :)
Hey look! It's Riker without a beard! I remember when Riker didn't have a beard, aaahh the memories...
Ahhh, beardless Riker is so amusing :)
[Quote from Deja Q]
Riker: I don't need your fantasy women
Q: Oh, you're so stolid! You weren't like that before the beard.
q for president 2016. Trump vice president .
Love the "oh I know hamlet" line, since Patrick Stewart is a Shakespearean actor and had played hamlet
"i see us, one day, _becoming_ that, Q.
Is it that which concerns you?"
Checkmate, Q. 🤙
Great comments on this episode, thank you all. All the best, DarMok.
With arms wide open! 😀
Miss this show the writing the cast and just everything was so well done and unmatched today by any Star Trek show since
Poor John de Lancie, having to recite Shakespeare in front of a classically trained master like Patrick Stewart. I would have shit myself the moment I read the script and knew I had to do that!
@Hockeygod98 exactly my point. Stewart is very celebrated for his work in Shakespearean theatre, so it’s like playing ball in front of Michael Jordan or some shit lol. Even pros fear that lol
John De Lancie was a shakesperian actor before this tho, so
@Hockeygod98Let's all calm down here. He is just reciting it. He doesn't have to transform himself as he would in a play.
@@DefSquadFan
FINALLY... thanks for seeing and noting the painfully obvious.
@@mckinleymac3452 You'z Welcome.
I'd still rather be Q than any other person in the Star Trek universe.
Seems like hell to me
Not me. No. NEVER!!!!
But how many centuries would you be willing to spend as the scarecrow?
@@mymartianhome Being the dog might be fun. I could lick places...
But seriously, how long a life is too long?
What is Q?
I like how Q was debating Picard on Shakespeare but the actor Patrick Stewart comes from a Shakespearean Actor background
“Nooooo! No one said game!” Lol
LOL Q is so hilarious and so smart.
"Oh your species is always suffering and dying."
got me.
I hadn't seen this before-and to listen to two actors such as these do a Shakespearean interchange in an essentially escapist sci-fi,well,it's brilliant-& the sort of thing which puts Star Trek on its classic pedastal.
Among the various times Q gets away with quick-witted, sarcastic moments in any of his notions or anecdotes, Picard was able to break him at least once. In other words, Q is not all-knowing about humanity and its flaws.
Maybe that's one of the limitation if our race was indeed chosen by God.
@@sebaszwarc6028 yes, q is the accuser
He growled for him.
John de Lancie is so awesome.
Sir Patrick reciting Hamlet, thank you!
Seeing inspired, intelligent mortals, duking it out in a battle of wits with "gods" and winning is a recurring theme in human literature and media, and I hope it never dies.
It is tales like this that inspire people to be the best that they can because of the promise of an amazing future for our species rather than to rot in apathy and hedonism for want of a belief in something greater FOR themselves, not THAN themselves.
They call that the "mischievous" God right? Like Loki and many other deities from mythology. The "devil" plays a similar role in the Bible. Often subjecting humans to various tests and games, including Jesus. The Olympian gods got off on that kinda stuff too. Its some type of hazing ritual. I think the hindus have stories like that too
Then in Voyager Tom Paris evolved himself forward to see the future of what mankind will become and it turned out to be a pretty average swamp lizard kind of creature.
No that wasn’t what happened at all. He was morphed. Also so was captain Jane way and he banged her.
@Steve P Modern humans suddenly appeared as a separate species. Neanderthal was NOT an ancestor, but lived along side modern humans for tens of thousands of years. Academia has no explanation.
@Steve P Modern humans walked the earth WITH Neanderthal. They overlapped for 10s of thousands of years.
Look it up.
I don't know what "science" books you read, but anything that claims modern humans "evolved" naturally from Neanderthal is bullshitting you. Modern humans appear "suddenly" in the fossil record. The fact is, THEY DON'T KNOW, but they're too arrogant to admit it.
@Steve P you're missing something . . . Neanderthals exist in the fossil record BEFORE modern humans show up.
There is no ancestor for modern humans. Why the gap? Who was Neanderthal descended from? If we have a common ancestor, WHY THE GAP??
Evolution as you're taught is a complete sham.
Q was the BEST scene stealer in this series.
Yes. You can't take your eyes off him
It’s worth reminding Patrick Stewart is British actor and he played lot of Shakespeare on stage, it’s great screenwriters made homage to that several times over the course of the show..
picard is the only captain that give this kind of asskicking just by speaking. hes the perfect adversary for Q
Then again, Sisko's literal ass-kicking was also very effective.
I love Q. He was always my favorite character/species. The way Picard hands him his own ass on a platter by reciting Hamlet, and Q's reaction...Golden.
And it's always a pleasure to hear Sir Patrick Stewart recite Shakespeare.
Wow, the first time picardy won the Word of the Wits battle against a Q
just a reminder that Sir Patrick Stuart worked for the Royal Shakespeare Company as well as performing in many plays written by Shakespeare. He's VERY familiar with Shakespearean literature 😅
Probably one of Picard's best moments on tng. A real Q smackdown. Delancie was a great choice for Q. He really nailed that roll.
You AGAIN SEIZED MY VESSEL! "And that angered you did it *Mockingly* seized my vessel seized my vessel..." Best part lmao!
"oh your species is always suffering and dying." sad but true.
0:10 This Is My Funniest Star Trek The Next Generation Episode Ever. Thanks Mate. X
Q actually takes Picard seriously for the first time, and probably for good reasons!
When you can shut up a God, with the words of a man. You are not getting there, you have arrived sir
The beauty and joy of Roddenberry-era Trek.
Nothing like the dark visions offered by today's writers.
For all of Q's sarcasm, stirring, games and provocation it seems to me that humanity is a species of special interest to him. A kind of pet project in which he and possibly the Q Continuum is closely monitoring. The reason? The answer is in Picard's Hamlet quote. Humanity may in the distant future evolve to the level of God like omnipotent beings. In other words, Q beings which the current Q and others like him, may consider humanity a future threat to their way of life and absolute mastery of the universe.
Also as various Star Trek series have explored stories involving multiple and parallel universes such as the mirror universe in DS9, I wonder what might occur if Qs from different universes met? Would they be able to coexist in mutual tolerance and friendliness, or might it result in a kind of multiverse war between Qs from different universes? Now that would make for an interesting two part story.
Sounds like a very interesting idea, I like it.
Thats because the human race is his favorite species. In the Spock vs. Q, Spock pointed that out to him when he had to play a game with Q to get him to save humanity. (you can find part 1 and 2 of Spock vs. Q on youtube or order it from Amazon.)
I just got to correct this:
The Q are from the Q Continuum, the Q are able to travel between dimentions at will.
Any Q meeting a Q is from the same Q Continuum.
So they would threat eacthother like a Q from the Q Continuum.
Q went from being arrogant, pompous & judgemental to becoming kind of an interested observer / cultural anthropologist, & then interfering when 1 ) he tried to recruit Riker into the Q, & 2 ) when he flung the Enterprise - D into Borg space ( Delta Quadrant ? ).
In one of the voyagers episodes they showed what the Q life was like and they had a book on all that was is and ever will be. So why then do they wonder if humanity might pose a threat? Since time isn't linear can't they just see all points in space or is time like a wobbally thing like in Dr. Who?
Your species is always suffering and dying....😂😂😂
Q is an aspiration to the Star Trek series! And Picard is usually one step ahead of him!
Am I the only one who thought that it was awesome to hear Patrick Stewart read the "What a piece of work is man" speech?
Goosebumps, I tell you!
3:47 Q is like, “damn it! Who told you? That’s not till season 7!”
3:49 -> I miss the first Q appearances in TNG because the sound of the Q flashes were somehow louder and more intimidating.
Is it bad that I laughed when Q said, "oh your species is always suffering and dying."
Amazing character.. Brilliant acting from john de lancie
Yes
“Don’t rely too heavily on one single view point” hmmm, an interesting thought; they certainly seem to.;)
Q just loves picking on Worf for no apparent reason 😂😂
"Is it that which concerns you? And don't call me Shirley."
I was lying on the sofa with pneumonia and a 106 degree fever when I first saw this. I had been one of the naysayers of the "new" Star Trek. But from this episode on I was hooked...forever :)
Q is the only good thing about TNG.
"oh, Commander Riker, who I noticed before" oh man - he is the best.
When you have angered your opponent and they lash out, you're going in the right direction: you have made them sit up and take notice.
This was where Q acted the most like Trelane. This led me to theorize Trelane was a juvenile Q. Q Squared is fanon, but it made since, revealing Q was Trelane's Godfather and possible Father.
I interpret Q's disgust at 3:34 because he sees Picard slipping into vanity and recklessness. He's interested in humans because they have the potential to ascend mortal limits, but that potential relies on them being humble and recognizing their shortcomings, while striving to overcome them, rather than believing themselves not to need anything more, like the Vulcans or Klingons
Exactly. Q understands that there are far more ancient and technologically advanced species out there capable of destroying the federation. Like the borg and the dominion
When Patrick Stewart thought Star Trek was beneath him as an actor, he was told "Trek is the last place you can do Shakespeare on TV." I don't think it was meant THIS literally.
Picard: I used to be an adventurer like you, then Q seized my vessel!
SEIZED MY VESSEL!
The little noise Worf makes lol
That was a funny catch.
Q is hilarious
Q always reminds me of John Cusak in the "Crazy Hitchhiker" scene from The Sure Thing.
3:23 whelp Q just threw the game, he revealed his personal feelings and goals.
Normie PFP
Macro head with a micro brain OMG ;DDDDD
And then he growled...
*Worf* barks
Acting at its best.
Complex and the tone.
And for some reason, I don't remember either of those scenes.
Q is wearing the collor of the order of the golden fleece
Q getting pissed off with humans!
Epic! ☺
The worf growl makes me giggle
Looking back at some of these shows years later, they've achieved their own vintage look. Might be nice to redo some of the special effects like they did with TOS.
+Earl Grey What is trolling? Saying terrible things to generate responses? No.
+Earl Grey Excellent links. Thanks very much. I noticed some of it, like the planets being redone. I didn't notice any of the film gear in the shots but your links mentions several of them.
I’ve noticed a slight personality change from Q over the season. In the episode The Tapestry I think that was his best.
In this episode, he's never been so very Q-ish.
Q's character reminds me of Endora from Bewitched always causing mischief
Never realize getting rid of Q was as easy as quoting Hamlet... 😁😜😈
I hope Q appears in the new Picard series
didnt even think of that but now if he doesnt ill be super disappointed. thanks for planting that seed
An elderly Picard vs Qs antics. That would be interesting to say the least.
@SinistaN He can appear as any species, with any look. He could just say "Well... I just happened to want to look like you... Admiral."
According to the actor himself (Patrick Stewart) Picard will not be TNG, I assume by that none of the aspects that made TNG great will be there
well dont hold your breath.
Picard kicks ass..
That was a great catch!
A test of strength !
the interactions between Q and Picard were always next level
Sisko just KO'd him right off the bat. Not interested in banter
I agree. However i am 15 and have been watching star trek since i was 12 :D i have seen all tos, tng, voy and i am getting through ds9. It makes me sad too :(.
You following Discovery? You must be 19 now!
Hmm, must read more Shakespeare. Seems he understood something.
Q makes me laugh when he tries to fill Picard's head with ideas with things he's not interested in or curious about.
And the final season episode, all good thing giving picard a very HARD test.
It's a precious scene, isn't it?
The only man who's acting chops could ever match Patrick Stewart's.
Picard: The only captain to get the better of Q.
