I have a 2nd Hour watch with amazing knurling on the crown and it's wild how much better it feels when you are winding it. Especially now in the summer.
i own this watch. many websites say 22mm lug width. i just measured it again and i got 21.3mm when measuring the top of the lugs, and 22.3m on the underside. I have worn this on 3 different 22mm straps and they fit with no extra resistance. Therefore i would not recommend putting a 21mm on it because if it can be sized up to 22mm without difficulty, it means 21mm would leave room for shifting/spring bar failure. also, you said the links and end link are hollow? both are 100% solid. that's what makes this watch amazing - it's a seiko 5 with solid lnks and 200WR!
I really like it. The day/date is a must for me. The yellow hands make it really stand out. Another all time winner for Seiko. I like that you bring us unique watches. I bet it sells out. You're a little funny, but I like that too.
I bought this watch about a month ago off eBay after seeing this review. Its a mad thing to wear, big presence on your wrist and not subdued or subtle in any way. Easy to read, keeps perfect time and very entertaining to wear. People don't really know what to say about it when they first see it and then they make compliments when they handle it and look more closely at the finishing. And these people wear Tudor or Breitling so they do know a watch when they see one. Overall its a good value for money well made interesting talking piece that doesn't just hide away on your wrist. Its definitely not a boring watch.
This is a fun watch to wear. What's particularly crazy is that the bracelet, cheap though it may be, mates with the lugs better than other recent Seikos 4xs the price. It looks really nice on wrist.
I took it to not ruin my skx007 at sea. I immediately got rid of the bracelet and put it on tactical nato strap: it light the watch and add extra security in immersion. I dive at 10 meters maximum and I had no problem with it. Great visibility also underwater, the bezel its not the easiest to rotate underwater but it works. The lume is very lasting. For the compass, its a solar one, so does not make any sense to have any attrition or block, because its based on the movement of the sun wich is always changing.
Great video MWC! Finding little forgotten gems like this is so fun and rewarding! If i ever find the right SKX013 I'll have that on my wrist again for sure - one of the few older model Seiko's I regret selling...

Chunky hands and crown at four o'clock don't bother me as I own Citizen Promaster which has the same but the compass crown is just not for me. Otherwise nice video. I'm looking for something from Seiko I'll keep watching.
Picked myself up one of these last year, I spotted that Seiko was discontinuing a load of lines and pushing prices up on the new models, so bought a few models in the £150 to £250 bracket, such as the Flightmaster, this and a solar diver. I'd have to pay more for all of them this year. I make my living off compasses so that appealed as a toy, but every time the watch moves on my wrist the oversized crown causes the compass ring to move, it just messes with my OCD when north doesn't align with the 12 😂

Ain't it amazing, Russ, how Seiko's release of an amazing "retro" 5 can get us all actively looking about for other 5s we have at least a *slightly* better chance of snagging? I'm pretty much past thinking I'll manage snagging the '68 5 Sports, but like you, I've found something from the "old" 5 catalog that's just about as compelling, and actually provides a missing-link-of-sorts in my collection. Interestingly, it's the polar opposite of the Land Shark, which I've kept coming across over the last handful of years (in quite a few varieties - anybody interested should take a deep dive online for a look-see), but between my Alpinist and my 5 Sports GMT (and - nearly forgot - my Anniversary 5 Sports Spacewalk/"Unicorn"), I'm already pretty Hulked-out. That said, that Shark looks great on your wrist!

While I've seen this watch online in my watch journey the past 5 years, I've not seen a video review. Thanks for doing one! It's really tough as nails looking. I love the knurling on the crowns on SKZ211. I'd love to see an updated version in the Prospex line. Speaking off tough as nails with a compass bezel AND GMT AND 20ATM water resistance like this one is the not remotely cheap SNR025 spring drive model. It's very cool, but I'd love to see a Prospex level "King" model with a sapphire crystal, 4R36 movement (you know they won't go dateless), milled clasp bracelet, and ALL of the print be lumed. Come on, Seiko! MAYBE they would compromise with a 4-something date ala the SRPC31. That would just upset others though.

Great video for a great find of a great discontinued watch. I'm winging my way over to Jomashop as we speak. Think I'll follow that up with a visit to the rubber strap shop tho 👍
Wow, not too many videos on this one! I've had my "Atlas", as it's also known, since my dad bought it for me after college around '07, as we're both into scuba and mechanical watches. It may not be an official "dive" watch, but with that 20bar, its been on my wrist for dozens of recreational dives and had no problems. Use the rotating bezel to time all kinds of things. Also taken it backpacking, but never needed to use the compass. Delightfully chunky, and those yellow hands just pop beautifully against the busy-but-not-too-busy dial. I was not prepared for the number of compliments its gotten over the years. One unfair complaint I hear is that the compass crown is too loose, but if you look up how to use it, this is a feature, not a bug.
It’s nice to read that you have used your Atlas during dives. I have read so many times that you should not swim or dive with this one because of ”compas crown”. I really love my Atlas and would love to wear it even in water. you would say its safe to swim/shower etcetera with this beautiful Watch?😊
@@Itslogica as long as your crown is screwed down, you're good to go. Shower would be no problem. Swim, dive, scuba, whatever. The glass is hardlex, so it's got some scratches over the years.
Beautiful watch. I had seen it only in awful pics. I'm going to try to buy it...and another 21mm strap because I don't like it on the bracelet. Great review.
Just a quick correction, toughness is the term for break resistance. So in this case hardlex is tougher than sapphire, but sapphire is harder than hardlex.
I like the fact it’s made by Seiko. The sapphire made in most watches are third party. So even if you don’t like Hardlex and trust me I’ve beaten my Seiko’s without scratching them, just give’m the credit for making there own glass ?
Loving the channel and damn thats a nice watch. Id appreciate your opinion on the mudmaster gwg2000, i have heard that it cant be serviced if it develops a fault, do you know if thats right, also what do you think of in general? Thanks for your hard work.
Very cool. I’d rather have it without the inner rotating bezel. I have an SNZJ and has the exact same problem. The inner bezel keeps moving from contact with the wrist.
I wish more watches were made with internal rotating bezel as I like that. Maybe not compasses though as I think they're practically useless. Anyone needing to navigate properly would be much better off with even a really cheap and small pocket compass, and with a watch compass you still need to be able to tell where the sun is, not much use for most of the year in blighty! 😂
Why did they get rid of the shield 5 design? I'm not opposed to the new one, but it's certainly not as cool as the traditional. Incidentally, I appreciate the Betelgeuse notebook.
Wow! And thank you! I had forgotten about this beauty! It really is a cracker! And great to see your review! As you say - such a tough looking watch and with 200m water resistance, perhaps that's why Seiko discontinued it - it puts (most of) the current (pretty) Seiko 5s in its (tough watch) shade! that, and I guess it wouldn't fit well in the Pro-specs range. Interesting that you compared it to the Arnie, I too was thinking similarly as I watched the show. BTW, thank you for talking me into buying the Arnie a few months ago! I've sine swapped the shroud for a stainless steel after market alternative - and WOW it looks (even) better for it! Have a think on that. Thanks again for the show! All the best from Perth Australia.
The SNZG-015J is one of my "Favorite Fives", but the prices are going up, even at Jomashop. I paid $154 USD a year ago, but they seem to be out of stock at this point.
Thanks for sharing this "old" discovery. Although, I'd rather have the extra crown on the same side of the watch like the Seiko "Alpinist" (SPB121). In any case, it looks tough as nails. I wonder, however, what type of accuracy you can get out of an older movement like this 🤔 Once again, great show 🙂👍🏼
Whilst on the Seiko 5 subject consider the SNK381, with its background story as used by US special forces in the Vietnam conflict of the 60's it'll be a good edition to any military watch collectors here 😉

Beautiful watch. I had seen it only in awful pics. I'm going to try to buy it...and another 21mm strap because I don't like it on the bracelet. Great review.
My next watch will be a Seiko Flieger Orange. To Join my Timex Scount 40 & G shock.
Can’t see any digital watch being serviced. Just replaced!!;) they are incredible bits of kit!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR thanks very much
seiko SRPE85 / SRP637 are tough looking watches too 👍🔥
Great show !!!
Love the look of this watch.
Wow what a great find!
Solid rubber bands would look good on this. This is on the list
Great work. I've been thinking about buying one for a while but I was waiting for your wife's report and she hates it. Oh dear.
I own one and I love it!
The navy blue one is the one to buy 👍
Is the K1 any different than a J1 ? For only a few bucks more they sell the J1 ? I’m confused. Please any tips on that ?
Great review. I want one!
Very cool. I’d rather have it without the inner rotating bezel.
I have an SNZJ and has the exact same problem. The inner bezel keeps moving from contact with the wrist.
Think I’ve just accepted it’s gonna move!!
Very cool. Thank you.
Great looking watch, was intrigued but emotionally zoned out at hearing "21mm".
Hahahahaha you’d find a good strap !
Looks like this on a NDC strap could be a match made in heaven, and it's 21mm if I'm not mistaken.
@@drongodrib6357 perfect!!!!
@themadwatchcollector What about a video on best visually clear watches for us Mr Magoos out there?
I wish more watches were made with internal rotating bezel as I like that. Maybe not compasses though as I think they're practically useless. Anyone needing to navigate properly would be much better off with even a really cheap and small pocket compass, and with a watch compass you still need to be able to tell where the sun is, not much use for most of the year in blighty! 😂
I saw someone put this on pre-sale for 110 pounds maybe and I was like "MAAANNN"
Got the 2 versions made in japan and they are gorgeous
The end links are solid
They so are!!!
Russ: Have you always used a copy of "The Handbook for the Recently Deceased" for WTWS comments? Great pull, one of my favorite movies of all time! ⭐
A few times! ;)
"Hate it, looks like a plug!" 😆🤣🤣
What are your thoughts on “Bottlecap” Seiko?
I like it!
Need to look at that shroud!!!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR I'll email some photos, tomorrow. Well past bedtime here now (GMT+8)! TTFN Steve
The SNZG-015J is one of my "Favorite Fives", but the prices are going up, even at Jomashop. I paid $154 USD a year ago, but they seem to be out of stock at this point.
Thanks for the review! Very interesting watch. If it was a couple mm smaller (or $100 cheaper) I'd probably snag one.
I hear you Rob;)
Nutty that the k models were $190 new, not all that long ago. Those days appear long gone.
Owning the marvelous piece sooner.
Thanks for sharing this "old" discovery.
Although, I'd rather have the extra crown on the same side of the watch like the Seiko "Alpinist" (SPB121).
In any case, it looks tough as nails. I wonder, however, what type of accuracy you can get out of an older movement like this 🤔
Once again, great show 🙂👍🏼
I’ll test it!
Whilst on the Seiko 5 subject consider the SNK381, with its background story as used by US special forces in the Vietnam conflict of the 60's it'll be a good edition to any military watch collectors here 😉
I’m on it!!!!
Thanks!
Bloody hell Spence!!!!! Just you being a member is enough!!!! Thank you!!!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR Fine show - and another watch I'm educated and motivated to buy. Thanks. And you are most welcome.
I almost got this years ago, but didn't really like it in person.
