The comment at 11:30 about the television broadcast he saw about the families that fled in a balloon is incorrect. The families referenced didn't flee from East to West Berlin (which was a closed city within the DDR with three sectors on the West (GB, F, US) forming West Berlin, and the Soviet Sector on the East forming what the DDR referred to as their capital, but was referred to by the West merely as East Berlin), rather they fled out of the DDR ( Take off in Oberlemnitz, East Germany, and landing in Naila, West Germany) and across the border into West Germany proper, not West Berlin. The families referenced were those of Peter Strelzyk and Günter Wetzel, who fled on September 16, 1979.
I grow up in Cuba . Left in 2005 , I still remember by first time seating with an government officer in a small office because I wanted to travel abroad . All the time I wanted to leave , I had to go throu the same horrible bureaucratic process. Always scared that they will deny me exit . NOTHING COMPARES TO FREEDOM , my friends ! 😢
I remember that vividly and we joked about it, saying that the iron curtain wasn't enough and now they had to build a roof over eastern Europe too to keep the people in.
neuvěřitelný příběh. Už jen přeletět ty hranice balónem by byl čin hodný obdivu, ale tohle je ještě o mnoho odvážnější. Sednout do samodomo postaveného balónu, bez předchozích znalostí. Bláznovství v dobrém slova smyslu.
Strange that the border didn't open fire. I like to think that they (or their officer?) just thought "...Cufk it. Man gone to all that trouble, just let him g'wawn!"

Brave family , sad to think of the people who tried and got shot
Wonderful watching this flight to freedom.

If you never try you will never succeed

Rest in peace brave man.

R.I.P salute....
I believe this story inspired the film Night Crossing.
I think it was a similar story of two East German families escaping to West Germany that inspired Night Crossing.
It's not from this, google East German balloon escape or Peter Strelzyk and Gunter Wetzel
Is the other way around, he saw the story about the german escape on TV. See 11:15
I remember the German family that did this but did not now anyone else had. American democrats should see this.
They really do want to bring back similar government as East Germany. Look how the FBI acts.
