A lot of those races I hadn’t seen before and I didn’t know he’d sired Fairy Footsteps nor Wassl , so a lot learned today . Cheers for that , very much appreciated . Something not often spoken about regarding Paul Mellon is the contribution he made to steeplechasing in the United States especially in the Middleburg and The Plains areas of Virginia just outside Washington DC. Quite a few racing related historical markers at at The Virginia gold cup they race around and cross Mellon Field.
I'm 70 and followed racing all my life and 1971 produced the two best horses ever, the best miler brigadier Gerard and the best middle distance horse bar none mill reef and I'm in no doubt that he would have trounced the brigadier over a mile and a quarter and they would have both put Frankel in his place 31:40
Yes 2 Great Horse but you simply cannot compare Generations.Its impossible.As you know Mill Reef got injured before The Eclipse and it never happened but Joe did say Mill Reef would have beat him that Day but there is no doubting the result of The 1971 2000 Guineas.
