He quite literally wasn't aware of the risks. He accepted the consequences with as much grace as human possibly could but he wasn't aware while lifting that his body was already broken and pushing it any further without medical treatment will cripple it for life. He thought that it was just pain, no biggie, nothing unusual and to his misfortune he just happened to have the most insane pain tolerance on this planet. It was his greatest gift and biggest downfall. Had he listened to his body he could have still been a legend and had fully functioning spine.

If you didn’t know this man had an extreme pain tolerance which helped him lift heavy weights for long periods of time, so he overtrained a lot and one day he heard a loud crunch in his back during a heavy lifting challenge but never got it checked out and continued training for 10 years. Apparently the thing he had was something that if it didn’t get fixed more of it would keep happening so 10 years of training after it happened almost paralyzed him.

Thanks I'd never heard that part and always wondered why other olympians and powerlifters didn't seem to have the severe consequences he had. Was the crunch an entire vertebrate collapsing? The sad thing is they can now put something akin to bone concrete in the vertebrae and fix that pretty easily today.
