In multi-storey buildings its common for families to panic and run out of their apartments. Due to this the staircase will be filled with smoke from the level the fire started to all the way up. The smoke is extremely toxic in building fires and will corrode your lungs quickly, resulting in respiratory failure in mere seconds.
