Modern engines with GDI, plastics, electronics = more 💩to break. There's beauty in simplicity. The bean-counter engineering (build-em cheap, sell them at a king's ransom) rampant throughout the automotive industry has led to more efficient but less durable vehicles.

Personally I don't think old cars are that great either....
I PERSONALLY think cars peaked in like the late 90s-2000s. That being said IMO all cars are far from "perfect". Even "simple" cars are still so complex that the average person just can't maintain them for long periods of time. You could have an amazing engine, but a bad transmission, you could have an amazing engine and transmission but the interior falls apart, the climate control falls apart, constant starter issues, constant electronic issues.
If you can't start the car it doesn't matter how good the engine is, or the transmission. If the vehicle isn't safe to drive it doesn't matter.
There are so many critical components to a vehicle beyond the engine, and auto manufacturers have COMPLETE control. They can change things faster than people can keep up, and most 3rd party parts nowdays are COMPLETE TRASH. So when your old car eventually needs new parts are you gonna just fabricate all your own parts yourself? Some dudes can do that if they have a shop, most people can't.
Cars are always gonna be a scam.

That's called confirmation bias. You believe something and then go and find evidence that supports your beliefs. On the contrary, you should first look at all the evidence and then formulate your beliefs ie, there's many examples of gdi engines going well past 200k miles with no issues. To me it looks like the civic owner used the wring type of gas, bc yes with gdi you gotta use premium

In general I am not a fan of direct injection because of the carbon issues. A solution is doubling the injectors. Adding injectors back into the intake manifold runners. You could run one set at lower rpm and switch to direct injection at higher rpm for example. If tuned properly, it wont actually use more fuel, it just would adjust where fuel comes in. Audi does it with their new 5 cylinder models.

Honda actually did good with this design, in my opinion, with designing the fuel injectors to spray at least the valve seats and as much of the rest that would enter the chamber.
I digress, engineers are the backseat drivers nowadays for the accountants at the wheel.

Have a 2020 Veloster N performance package with a 2.0 liter GDI and have had no issues other than a HPFP replacement. Currently have 60,000 miles with perfect maintenance and beat the crap out of it. Only mods are Injen CAI. I've had Honda's and Toyotas and BOTH had more issues than my current car. The issue with GDI cars is YOU MUST KEEP UP WITH EARLY MAINTENANCE INTERVALS 💯 USE TOP TIER GAS ONLY. EVERY 30,000 miles, get a BG 3 stage cleaning done. It's about $200 but worth it. I already knew what was getting into with a GDI turbo when I bought it but honestly, I haven't spent a penny out of pocket except for BG treatment. Just my personal experience so far with GDI.

I think about how the VW Golf GTI and Jetta GLI were the first popular common cars to get it in the USA. People learned quickly that GDI had a set of problems.
However, Honda added their own problems when they went T-GDI. I think about how the L15 was designed from day one to be a high fuel economy NA engine, so it would be just fine with a huge open deck and tiny bearings. A proper turbo engine has extra material all over the place when compared to the NA variant, or the NA variant always had lots of extra material. At least the VW TGDI had a chunky iron block and big crank bearnings.
People might not want a non-GDI engine. However, just don't get a non-GDI engine is a bit like saying "Get an engine with no smog devices."

    • @robertmaybeth3434
      @robertmaybeth3434 Місяць тому +1

...concur, a properly designed turbo engine has several features not present on non-turbo motors. A dedicated separate oil filter, inline to the turbo is one of them, 4-bolt main bearings is another. If it lacks these things, it's just a normally aspirated engine with a turbo slapped on as an afterthought.

For the average consumer I agree DI engines are no good. From a performance aspect though it’s great technology. What we need are more automakers doing what Ford does and having DI engines that also have auxiliary port injection. I personally don’t mind the setup of a DI engine except for the fuel system. I’m someone who always modifies vehicles and the cam driven fuel pumps are a restriction on almost everything I’ve built in the last 10 years. Other than that I enjoy DI from a performance standpoint because it allows more compression to be run with more boost and increased timing which in turn = more power for a given setup for each pound of boost. It’s not hard to deal with keeping valves and everything clean because I’m OCD about maintenance anyway. For the lady driving her Honda CRV to work everyday though and just taking it to the dealer every 10k for an oil change DI is a nightmare though which is unfortunate because almost all popular vehicles are GDI these days.

Walnut blast or baking soda blast the back the intake valves. I would recommend Valvoline Restore and Protect at 1,000 mile intervals for the first four oil services to clean it out and then every 5,000 subsequently with the Valvoline RP to keep it clean. Hope this helps.

As such all the new garbage cars should then be 1/5th of the cost they are. If EPA mandates unreliability, the opposite of longevity and sustainability, then the government mandate should include an automatic $30K rebate with each new vehicle purchased. The EPA is not just a failure, it is an abandonment of sensibleness, wisdom and everything that is holy as well as green to the planet we all share and inhabit. There must be no engineer and no mechanic left these days at the EPA.

Turbo GDI is race engine tech that is in wrong domestic auto application. Power, performance remains marketing gag. Race engines only have design life to finish one race, then rebuilt or scrapped. As video explains, GDI is needless high pressure complexity.. It's fire hazard if fittings leak and spray high pressure fuel over hot engine.. High pressure pump loads timing chain more, likely causing stretching. GDI can cause oil dilution.

No oil consumption, no notisable blowby and finally... less fuel consumption. The Mokka being 50 kg lighter, but 2 dl less fuel consumption (5dl in Mokka and 7 dl in Insignia) per 10km than the Insignia cant be just because of the 50 kilos.. If we look at the total energy and waste that is a result of Direct Injection, with extra maintenance, engines and cars that have shorter useful service lives, is this less than the older style port fuel injection?
