The Spurs Are "Ruining" Victor Wembanyama

  • Victor Wembanyama just went off for an efficient 30 points but it’s one of the few bright spots for the Spurs this season. Chet Holmgren is the clear front runner for Rookie of the Year and some people have suggested the Spurs are hurting their number 1 pick. This is a look at why that claim is being made and if it’s correct.

This is he first season. His success is advertisement to get players to come to San Antonio. The Spurs have 3 things going for them:
      (1) It's still one of the best ownerships and front office in the league to work for, second is Dallas, and third is Golden State (2) San Antonio is a nice small city that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to live in, and (3) the Spur Mountain subdivision.

That's the problem right there... that was declared before he even stepped onto the court. He is not playing well enough for it to be "Wemby's Team". You think it will get better if he gets the ball MORE? You think his efficiency is going to go UP when other teams key in on the fact that he's the only one getting the ball? Did you WATCH THE VIDEO? he already has the highest rookie usage rate, he has the most shot attempts on the team... he's been given the keys to the kingdom, and has not been efficient. 2 different worlds. Wemby is being taught to carry a franchise. Chet is being asked to be an efficient floor spacer on a team with an mvp candidate. Both will flourish and succeed. Chet at 19 on the spurs might have ended up in the hospital his first few games.

Chet with Spurs mean the Spurs have way more than 5 wins. Chet is so solid and a winner, he is out here hitting buzzer beater 3's with someone in his face, getting three blocks in the last 90 seconds of a tied game to propel his team to win. Do you think that Victor would do that? Not a chance. Victor is a turn over choke machine and the 5 wins prove that. One or two good games don't change that he ain't money.
Chet with the Spurs getting Wemby's touches = averaging 30 points a game while still being a near 50/40/90 shooter.

What Casey didn't mention is the fact that a lot of Wemby's bad shots are due to frustration. He's getting the ball at the end of shot clocks and then bad situations when he's already frustrated from not getting the ball and so he tends to just jack the ball up at that point which lowers his efficiency. If he would have gotten the ball when he's calling for it in the paint, his efficiency would be much better.

i had completely forgotten about that sonics buildup to the okc dominance... my take on the "wemby situation" was just it was a young team, that had been bad for *years* and needed time and confidence, and confidence takes time. so, double time :P pop was there 30years ago when the spurs were awful and slowly built a team around robinson, he was the guy who drafted duncan, tp, manu and made them a dynasty. he knows hat he's doing. plus, people look a the win/loss ratio and think this team is awful, but seeing the games, they're just young and clumsy, and they're tired, too : they play three quarters *very* good and then they're gased and they lose in the fourth. it has happened almost every single game since the begining of the season. this team, these players, all of them need *time* . the spurs aren't racing the indy 500, they're racing the le mans 24 hours.

Hmm. I think I have to disagree. You got me on the fact he needs development, but you saw what happened when he gets the ball more often. His basketball IQ is up there. He doesn’t look to just score. He creates lanes, making high IQ passes & that’s not even mentioning his defensive presence. He’s already one of the best players in the league but I’ll concede & say Chet is having a better rookie season.

Can’t unsee what my eyes have seen. Keldon and Vassell take dumb shots and they faze Wemby out at the rim. But it doesn’t matter they are developing I trust in Pop and the Spurs organization they know what they are doing

There's an elephant in the room - we all know wemby will - and need to bulk up. he is putting up all those numbers being 7"4 light weight.
just imagine what a beast he will be when he does add 10-15kg to his frame.

Wemby has his own off-the-backboard pass to himself. Chet is actually a 2nd-year player, and is the second option on his team. It is not surprising that he is more efficient. Wemby is getting better with each game. Now that his minutes restriction is over, he will get more experience each game. He is still the favorite for ROY, he is a smart student of the game with a high IQ, and has a HOF career ahead of him. The Spurs are taking the right steps. You did a great job of showing that with your comparisons to LeBron at Cleveland, and Durant at OKC. Hopefully the Spurs will draft more stars and they will stick together. I often wonder what OKC could have done if Durant, Westbrook, and Harden had not gone separate ways.

The last couple of games the spurs have actually have improved on getting him the ball. But despite having things he needs to work on he's still playing very well and is actually ahead of schedule statically. Most thought wemby would progress like Giannis did. Yes chet technically is more efficient but keep in mind he feeds off sga and has better passing guards. Anyways it will be great to see these two players progress over the next few years.

this is a massive cope and wrong. most thought wemby would dominate immediately and could potentially be the best rookie ever, he was also drafted for his amazing shooting ability in addition to his size. he shoots like dog shit and he's a huge reason his team loses. he has one of the highest turnover rates relative to his usage percentage EVER. cope and seethe

    • @johnconnor210
      @johnconnor210 5 місяців тому

@wesjanson6979 not true by any means. Most thought he would be great on the defensive end to start which he has and his offense would take more time to develop kinda like Giannis but he's putting up good numbers offensively. He's exceeded expections but and statically he's putting up better numbers than some of the current stars when they were rookies. Yes he has to work on some things but that will come in time. The main reason why the spurs are losing is to do to the fact they are the youngest team in the league and they don't have a big time point guard.

@@johnconnor210 this is pure cope. you can't re-write history in the age of the internet, the pre draft hype of Wemby is *well* documented and you can't make shit up about what he was expected to do.
Flat out, he is a DISAPPOINTMENT. Accept it now before you spend the next few years in misery waiting for him to take the step forward that will *never* come for this guy. He isn't made for NBA level ball, should have stayed in Euroleague.

Chet actually creates a lot of his shots. He’s better at creating and catching and shoot than wemby. Wembys best FG are back door cuts and fast break lobs

What I don’t think people understand is there so quick to judge this early in the season; outside of Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell they don’t really have anybody else that can play. I just hope people are patient and not expect major things this early. Wemby is going to be great just not for a couple years.

Wemby will learn some good things from pop then go and dominate on another team. We have seen this happen a few times with different players. He is learning the hard way how to carry a team, and he will have some good habits by the time he is out.
