She's a grand old lady, that's for sure. To steam again in the 21st century must be a huge privilege for those who worked on her and the Swanage railway for having her on the line. Beautiful engine and in the green livery too.
Living in Australia I will never get to see it as I'm now too old to travel so thank you for the wonderful footage. It truly is a beautiful and elegant loco and a great credit to those who worked on her. It was a wise decision by the NRM to entrust it to Swanage.
This is excellent footage & a huge credit to everyone involved in the restoration of 563 who made this happen!! - I hope one of the model railway companies will do a OO gauge RTR model of this one day......
I can’t imagine how proud the Swanage Railway are at being able to revive the T3 and see it pull trains again. All it needs is some proper LSWR coaches to make it complete.
I agree with every word. The practical problem is that even if the vehicles could be located the boiler certificate of 563 will have expired long before such a train is available. With a few exceptions carriage restoration has lived through the locust years. Very good video
When Pendennis Castle returned to steam, Didcot loaned her to several railways and I have a feeling the Swanage Railway will do the same with 563.. I don't think it'll be long until the SVR want to hire her for a gala..
Out of a cloud of steam comes a pretty "young" lady! Congratulations on the beautiful job of restoring her to her rightful place back on the rails. She's a little Queen. From Phoenix, AZ, USA, I can't get over how green the countryside is. It's a wonderful compliment to your video!
Superb video. One interesting visual effect I noticed around 3-4 minutes in is that you can very clearly see the exhaust steam from the chimney alternate direction slightly, changing from angled to the left and then to the right. I don't think I've ever seen that so clearly before in any steam loco footage.
Yep, I saw that too. Could be a short blastpipe with the exhaust from each cylinder hitting the petticoat just before exhausting the top of the chimney or a trick of the camera angle? I was appalled at the NRM deaccessioning this loco but what a marvellous job they have made of the restoration. I was wrong!
Not only does it alternate side to side but also fore and aft. So I suspect the blast pipe has four orifices, one for each exhaust beat, arranged in a quadrant.
Great to see it back in operational condition after all the negative comments when the NRM gave it to the Swanage railway in the first place about how it was going to left to deteriorate in the goods shed at Corfe. I for one am glad that the NRM let it go as it's my firm belief that these locos should be operational where possible. I think it's very sad that it's unlikely City Of Truro and the V2 for example are never likely to run again because of the NRMs rather dogmatic attitude that everything must stay as original which in itself is an anomaly as I doubt that there is any steam loco in the world that's truly original. Well done to all at the Swanage railway.
Such a beautiful locomotive and gorgeous scenery and weather to match. I could swear she looked pleased with herself (if that's possible for a loco) at the end 😊. Fantastic.
Omg! A perfect train for this Loco! 2 bullied carriages, and MK1, and the Devon Belle Pullman observation car! 😍 AND IT HAS 2 WHISTLES!? HOW ADORABLE! 😍💚💚💚😍 I love this Loco!
Nice video. I must try and make the effort to get down to the Swanage Railway next year after a four year break due COVID and various other various ailments.
Sounds in fine fettle, a lovely sharp bark. Looking forward to riding behind her later this month! Never expected that when I first saw 563 in the NRM at York over 40 years ago.
It is incredible to see the T3 face a fate that guaranteed its future as a working survivor. The team behind it have done fantastic wonders on it but I am glad to see they are coaxing it through its paces. Regards, Samuel Farris.
Magnificent 😊 saw her at Swanage Station today, incredible restoration job. Congratulations to all involved. Looking forward to a trip behind her this month 👍
Be Grand To See The T3 With A Rake Of LSW Period Coaches. She's Such A Beauty. Congratulations On All Those Who Have Brought Her Back Into The Fold. Wonderfull Filming Thank You.
Great video of this beautiful locomotive. Just goes to show that even though this engine may be old and hasn’t run under it’s own steam for 75 years, she still has plenty of steam in her to give and that she can be and still is a really useful engine. A true credit to the railway.
Has got to be the most elegant and beautiful locomotive , I look forward to riding behind it soon , a magnificent effort to all involved, very impressive ,
Lovely video and fantastic to see her running. Is it a trick of the imagination, or does the exhaust change side depending on which cylinder is exhausting?
Another lovely video very good camera work as usual I am really enjoying your lovely videos and camera work keep it up I am really looking forward to seeing your next video I hope you get a nice video next time also when is your next video going to be on UA-cam best wishes Philip xx
Alright then we'd need 6 lorries and beg Bluebell to let us have some Ngl tho they mix in Bullied coaches with mk1s at Swanage, maybe for next year they could put all their Bullieds together?
Perhaps the stuffed animal museum at York could release LSWR coaches they have, or gift them to the railway, along with m7 245. Just shows what happens to freed locos from the stuffed animal museum when they are gifted to restoration groups that really value them.
As crews become more knowledgable with its driving characteristics, and how to get the best out of it, 5 will become much less of an issue. It's a side effect of the fact that, before it steamed at Swanage, no one alive had driven it.
Incredible clips and locations! I'd love to know some of the locations you filmed at since I'm a local and even I don't know where a lot of this was shot at!
Well done - a magnificent achievement! The crew were obviously working hard to keep the boiler pressure close to the line, but not quite blowing off. However, the fireman needs to be more careful to avoid so much coal flying up the chimney.
It's worth remembering, that until the T3 steamed at Swanage, no one alive had driven it. No advice to be given, no tips and tricks. Everything about its driving characteristics, and desirable firing techniques, is having to be learned at the controls. That said, the loco has been noted to be exceptionally smokey even when static. I'd suggest blame lies more with the coal quality than the fireman.
I expect as they adapt to the firing techniques it likes they'll be able to reduce the amount of smoke, but it sounds very good and could probably handle more than the test load (nice idea to include a couple of Maunsell carriages)
Wonderful views of an historic episode in the life of the T3. It truly created scenes that we have all not viewed previously. A testament to dedication, skill and commitment from so many, over such a long route back to live steam. Thank you for your skill and effort in capturing those shots & scenes. Remarkable.
A great video! Lovely to see 563 back in steam I must get up there myself! May I ask, What camera do you use? I find myself currently using my phone which is capable of 4K 60fps which kills its battery rather quickly.
It had a larger diameter blast pipe cap than it should have had so that may explain the exhaust going from left to right. They've since found a drawing/looked at the Adams Radial at the Bluebell and made a smaller diameter cap which improved its steaming ability a lot.
I know nothing about steam engines except when I was a kid waiting for a train my mother would skip the steam train and wait for a diesel due to smoke getting into the carriage and ruining her hair 😂 is the excessive amounts of steam coming out of this first loco normal? Looks great though.
It's convoluted, but in essence. The stock was already coupled as 5. It was far more convenient operationally to take the 5 for one round trip, and then drop one at Swanage, while the crew get used to how the loco behaves under load and its driving characteristics.
Over 125 years old,, seventy-five since it last ran. Great work on a beautiful locomotive.

Adams was a great guy to work for. Very affable and approachable.
Great video! 02:45 - First time I've noticed the chimney-blast going from side to side with the alternating exhaust strokes.
That's such a small thing, I only noticed it on my second watch after seeing this comment.
Awakened from a long slumber, this locomotive looks very happy doing what it was intended to do.
I can’t imagine how proud the Swanage Railway are at being able to revive the T3 and see it pull trains again. All it needs is some proper LSWR coaches to make it complete.

It is a lovely loco, Isnt it? That colour looks splendid, very shiny in that Swanage sun!
@therailtourer
563 is scheduled to stay at Swanage for at least a couple of years.
Try to imagine, you can do it. I can!

Superb video.

Agree 100% and Its a travesty that CoT will probably never run again. I hope we are both wrong!

Not far off, but the Bulleid carriages you're refering to are Maunsell ones. But I agree, a lovely set for it.
Oh really!? So cool! Favorite is still the observation car for sure though!
Great achievement for all of us fanatics of PreGrouping Steam locos ! Sure is jolly good to see her running😊
absolutely bloody fantastic guys, I love it.

A beauty in looks and sound!
Excellent footage there of the T3. She sounds lovely. I'm looking forward to see her run when I pay a visit to Swanage?
Utterly magnificent. Well done everybody. Heritage Railways never fail us.
We Brits do love our steamies.
Excellent qulity video, especially the final sequence of 563 proceeding to the water tower at. Swanage. Well done everyone!
Thanks very much
That is one beautiful locomotive
Superb restoration ,she certainly looks and sounds in fine form
Many thanks for posting the video of an engine working after the railway museum in York gave it away as they did not want it any more

The swanage railway looking lovely . They've done a grand job on those loco's and carriages . Great video 👍🇬🇧

Gosh! What a beauty...
Glorious!😍😍😍
Superb loco defo got to come across & see this for myself !
Congratulations to everyone involved. Can’t wait to get behind her soon !
Great loco, great loco.
Thank you for this fine video!
Best wishes

Glad you enjoyed it

Absolutely wonderful ❤❤❤
Bloody Gorgeous. I remeber seeing her at York as a teenager and thinking how sad it was that she would never run again. I am sad no longer!
Sounds fantastic
As a Volunteer i feel very proud to see 563 in action and will always remember this occasion.
The old workhorse, still with many years to give.
Lovely video and fantastic to see her running. Is it a trick of the imagination, or does the exhaust change side depending on which cylinder is exhausting?
It does. Something about this engine makes that effect especially noticeable...
What a beauty! Congratulations to all concerned with her restoration to working order!
What a stunning engine! Superb stuff!
A sleeping beauty is brought back to life
First train in 75 years! Wow!
Wow! Don’t leave your washing out!
It’s been a long awaited time for 563 to haul its first passenger train the last time she did it was back in 1948 which was about 75 years ago
That truly is a magnificent sight.
Great video :)
Cheers
Incredible
Woah! Well done to those to completed its restoration!
Perfect for decent remake of the Railway Children
A very attractive locomotive in any gauge. No mention of its restoration on National news though (as far as I know.)
Another lovely video very good camera work as usual I am really enjoying your lovely videos and camera work keep it up I am really looking forward to seeing your next video I hope you get a nice video next time also when is your next video going to be on UA-cam best wishes Philip xx

Beautiful locomotive
My dad said they've been seeing how much the old girl can pull. Seemed fine with 4 coaches, seemed to be working alot harder with 5.

Brilliant footage Matthew. Are you going to be filming her first public runs?
Thank you! If all goes to plan...
Awesome Railfan video 👍👍👍👍👍🚂🚂
She is properly steaming!
Cannot wait for the day when the T9 gets its overhaul along with the m7 and we get 3 lswr engines running together

Perfectly normal for the first departure of the day, in cool conditions, after the loco has been stationary for a while.
What was the reason for them going from 5 to 4 coaches?
It's convoluted, but in essence.

@@TheSouthernerYTChannel thank you for the reply👍🏻that’s understandable
does this make it a 4-4-0 american standard type?
Technically, it is, although British locomotive classification doesn't refer to it as such, its just simply 4-4-0.
