There was a single unarmed OH-58D during the Battle of Mogadishu. Urban fighting with the KW was difficult IRL. Generally, we would fly at higher altitudes in an orbit and use a diving fire engagement. If collateral was a major concern, we would use the M4. Another note: The APKWS was introduced at the very end of the OH-58D life in the U.S. Army, so there isn't much experience employing them from the KW in urban combat.
Had these provide CAS in Afghanistan C/S Bam Bam, best pilots and just crazy always up for a fight never let us down. Much respect Bam Bam from a retired Australian Army veteran.
Looking at that list of aircraft you've put through this, the obvious missing one is the Gazelle. I feel like the AI minigunners would rack up a decent score, but maybe they're wipe out the buses too!
The prototype OH-58F model had a state of the art sight that was could be mounted either on top above the main rotor or moved to a mount under the nose. The nose mount was specifically designed for this situation where you needed to look down in an area where there wasn’t a need for masking behind cover (ie an urban engagement/COIN fight).
As I understand it, the Kiowa was used as a spotter/designator for the gunships. It was rarely expected to do its own shooting, which is good. The Kiowas I saw when I was in the Army were not even armed. They were so lightly built that they really couldn’t take a hit. Once they started putting the optics on the Apaches, the Kiowas were phased out. It is amazing that you did as well with it as you did…especially when you went to unguided weapons.
As a career Kiowa Warrior pilot, much of your understanding is incorrect. The unarmed KW pre - 1991 was a reconnaissance and forward observer aircraft. Once they armed the OH-58D, it was a Light Attack / Reconnaissance helicopter, expected to engage targets as the mission dictated, often withM4s. I have seen KWs take an RPG round and keep flying and an Apache take a single AK round and go down, so your "lightly built" theory is wrong. The Apache had optics installed from the very beginning, so that had no bearing on the continuation of the KW in the US Army. I appreciate that you commented and thank you for your service. I just don't want people less knowledgeable on the topic to be misinformed.
Of course they could. I had them provide me with air support in Baghdad and in Afghanistan. Baghdad is a super dense city, so I'm sure it was difficult for them.
We had to call a medevac in Afghanistan, the fricking pilot got out of his helicopter and ripped a stock of Marijuana and brought it back onto the helicopter. I had just seen my team leader get blown up by a ied and i was the designated medic for the mission because we only had one medic for our platoon, so i was kind of shocked when i saw the pilot run out and grab a stock of Marijuana. The weed grew about 20 feet tall and youll get lost in it at night. He grabbed a 6 foot stock and those have roots so it took a little for him to rip it out. Its been growing naturally there forever. Its all indica. I was in the 101st 2BCT 1-502 INF from 2010 to 2013.
Yes, that helicopter was from the 80s and used to pair up with the Apache and if I remember correctly, the duo was called the Apache longboat because the ball on top was not a ball at the time but a circular object that spun and the Kiowa could stick that above buildings using buildings and hills as cover trees While still submitting the radar out and then the Apache could use their laser to fire their weapon now of course they’ve put that all into the Apache so they don’t have to anymore more of strategic reconnaissance et al
You should replay this but use more movement when using the guided weapons. Instead of basically sitting stationary and only having your sector of fire, move a bit more and search out better avenues and target opportunities.
I guess you really didn't pay attention did you? They did move around in their sectors. And you saw in the second mission what happened, you end up having either a friendly fire or an air-to-air accident
I think the friendly fire with guided weapons is due to being stuck in one cardinal direction. Sure you can strafe a bit to the side, but you cannot see who is behind the corner of the building. So sending a rocket to that area to kill a baddie will get you some blue kills as well. If it was not as time sensitive you could have talked with the other cardinal positions to verify if any friendlies were too danger close. Also no appreciation was done before any of the guided attacks so SA was quite low for an urban setup without any cross talk on the radio.
@@Wyomingchief Mostly from the movie but have gone through the wiki in the past. Any specific part you are referring to or just making a vague post for engagement?

I served in US Navy. It is not news to anyone that there is typically a 20-30 year delay in what America has versus what it unveils. It may be news to many that the world hasn't seen the US unrestrained since WW2. Even then, some restraint. I wonder if you lot can imagine this scenario: The US, versus a major foe, but actually current and actually unrestrained. Total war with the sole aim of eliminating the enemy force in total. Due to server limits, I imagine it would certainly have to be a series. I ask this in the small hope that enemies of peace might be refreshed on what they COULD face. And, for the record, while ICBM deterents are not better than 70% today, they are layered. Launch, orbit and re-entry are all covered from a lot of ranges. We have so many bases, in so many locations, for so, so many reasons. The US hasnt been on a war footing since WW2 either. It produced, among so much, nearly 100 carriers in 4 years. Imagine what it could do today. This isn't about pride and ego, it is a message of peace through power. The crazier this and other countries get, the more realistic this becomes. I fear some may look at actions like Vietnam or Afghanistan and imagine they have an opportunity. I imagine ego maniacs like Putin may value money and power above reason at some point. I imagine a day when Lady Liberty throws her book and torch to the ground and grabs a gun. Deterence and horror is all there is.
The wire cutters on the helicopters make me wonder--were they there for the occasional "oops, I just flew into a power line," or could they be used proactively? Can Ukraine make wire cutting drones to slice Russia's power transmission lines to ribbons?
Yeah they're not 100% fail safe. They also are frequently attached to medical helicopters and law enforcement helicopters. I do know of one incident in Missouri where it did not work in the helicopter crashed
Hey Cap, do you guys think you could do a "*ALL* of Russia's navy vs the US seventh fleet" battle? would the server even be able to handle it? for Russia, that would be one carrier, 2 kirov class battle cruisers, 2 Slava class cruisers, 10 destroyers (8 Usaloy, 2 Sovremenny), 12 frigates, and more corvettes than I'm willing to count (however, only a handful of which actually have missiles). the seventh fleet has 1 CVN (the Reagon), 1 LHA (the America), 2 Ticos (CG 54 and 62), 10 DDGs, and 8-12 SSNs (can't find an exact number anywhere. shocking, i know). there is also a third cruiser in the 7th fleet, LCC-19 Blue Ridge, however they are not a combat ship. i don't know how they get away with calling themselves a cruiser. realistically, the 7th fleet would just be keeping them busy until the 3rd fleet arrived (being ~4-5 times larger than the 7th fleet)
They've done this scenario you're talking about, And just a heads up, America wins Also sounds like you're wanting a actual currently realistic battle and in that case the Russians do not have an aircraft carrier and have not had a serviceable one for at least 5-7 years and in fact will probably never have it back in service again. If by some miracle they can get it seaworthy, it's going to be most likely at least 6 years at the most optimistic guess 😂 Current ships assigned to the 7th Fleet: Aircraft carriers: USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) ( technically the USS Ronald Reagan is no longer stationed in Japan it left earlier this month. Also I believe there are only two Ticonderoga class Cruisers currently in service but they are not assigned to the 7th Fleet and in fact I believe are currently at Dockside in Philadelphia. Because the US Navy wants to decommission them but Congress won't let them. The America is not assigned to the 7th fleet, in fact there is no LHA assigned to the 7th fleet.
