My brother and I both served on the Kitty Hawk during Vietnam. The hard work and responsibilities made solid grown man of us both. We have great memories of our time with her and have mixed emotions to see her go. What a great ship.
My Dad flew off the Kitty Hawk when I was growing up. She was a beautiful carrier and did her job. The Midway is a permantly docked fantastic carrier museum in San Diego harbor, my Dad also flew off of her.
It's ok alot of her will go back into the next generation Air craft carriers.... And the USS Kitty Hawk will always be in our hearts and the next generation..
Most of her metal will not go back into the next aircraft carriers. Most of it will most likely end up in civilian appliances (as what commonly happens).
Yes it's a shame. they did the same thing to the Charles F Adams DDG 2. an organization took a long time to get the funds and paper work in order and when they had everything ready, Boom, the Navy said No.
It was NOT sold for 1 cent. That 1 cent is what they paid for the rights to dismantle this grand lady. The US Navy still owns the ship. The Navy will also get a portion of the money made off the scrap, metal, and challenge coin sales generated. Too many people got the 1 cent thing wrong.
This is fitting for such a fine vessel. She will continue to serve as refrigerators, razor blades, and rebar for the United States and continue to make the United States
They were willing to buy the Kitty Hawk to make it a museum they had raised tons of money yet they sold it for a penny. Tell me someone cousin has a scrap company with out telling me.
The 1 cent price gets everyone up in arms but is not really explained. The scrapping company has to remove and properly dispose of all the toxic materials on these ships, like asbestos, PCBs, various fluids, lead paint, etc. at their cost. Add to that the levels of security that the USN puts on the dismantling of these supercarriers. It’s not cheap. All those costs are eaten by the scrapping company.
The process isn't cheap, but the government allows exemptions for most costs, and the returns are more than 10x initial investment. The ship breaking company will likely profit 8-10 million after this 18 month project

My dad direct the aircraft on the flight deck Thomas Lawson
My grandpa flew f-4's off this plane. Had so many stories he'd always tell me about his time in the Navy. I'm gonna miss him

I got a 10 pound chunk of the flight deck and a letter of authenticity from her. and they are making coins from the meatal.
My son served on the Kitty Hawk, including the decommissioning crew
I do hope the name Kitty Hawk gets reused again. Maybe the upcoming CVN-82 or CVN-83 Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier
She was NOT sold to the scrappers for one cent! The navy is paying scrappers one cent to dismantle her.
Why you assuming its gender?
Definitely a joke on my part.
My dad was an AW onboard CV63 in the 90s out of San Diego. I was an AW onboard out of Yokosuka 2006-2008. Soo much history being thrown away.......
Would be nice to have as museum ships, at the very least 1
I was on this ship when I was 2 years old
I have a uncle who served on the Uss kitty hawk and my grandpa got to go around it but idk what year it was

I wish i were stationed in the Kitty Hawk instead of the Carl Vinson. ☹️
Mabuhay!
Horrible experience on this ship. Hated every day I was onboard.

Someone has to get rich off of public property, right? I mean, the people, who cares what we want.
