  • Gymnast Simone Biles says on TODAY that it felt “incredible” to tumble her way into record books after nabbing her sixth U.S. title with a historic triple-double last week. Asked whether USA Gymnastics is changing in the fallout of the Larry Nassar scandal, Biles says: “I feel like you can always talk the talk, but you have to show up and you have to prove.”

    US Gymnastics should also apologize to Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman as well! Gabby was abused at the Olympics and then brainwashed by everyone around her, leading to that statement on modesty, which she erroneously made. The press turned on Gabby as soon as Simone and Aly showed up! It's just so hypocritical!

    • @captainbryce1
      @captainbryce1 5 років тому +12

      I think they have issued general apologies to everyone who was abused, but apologizing doesn't make up for the harm that was done. With respect to Gabby, she made a bad statement and she was appropriately called out for it by the other gymnasts (Simone and Aly) and that's why it made the press. She has since apologized for her statement, and it hasn't been an issue since. I don't think USA Gymnastics needs to apologize for her making a bad statement. That's something she needed to own herself, and she did.

    • @fredrika27
      @fredrika27 5 років тому +14

      @@captainbryce1 Regarding Gabby I totally understand about owning what she said. However, do you see how her parents used their religion to make her believe that it was some how "her fault" because she wasn't modestly dressed! Do you see how all the training to react like a robot lead Gabby to say what she did? Not only that, the hate campaign against Gabby for not being "patriotic" enough because she stood at attention to get her medal instead of putting her hand over her heart? It's all a form of controlling women and girls to be puppets in order to manipulate them into being submissive! In 2016 it was not okay for Gabby to be upset about how US Gymnastics treated the girls, but it's okay for Simone to curse and cry on camera! I call that a double standard!

      @@captainbryce1 I couldn't have said this any better. You have to own your ilk. Gabby will grow from this hopefully and has learned to not side with wrong even if you lose millions of stans. Gabby's fans are the ones that lulled her into that false narrative. The desire to be accepted by those fickle fans are not the fault of USAG.

    • @TxHoneyBee
      @TxHoneyBee 5 років тому +20

      McKayla Marooney settled in 2016 (though this was known inside the organization since when it occurred in about 2011 or 2012) and was forced into non disclosure over the abuse she suffered, and USAG still did not inform FBI, OSOC, MSU, local police, even congress about what that vile criminal Nassar did to McKayla, who was traveling also internationally when she was abused. Yes in fact they did silence female gymnasts for the last 30 years or more, maybe since the sport's inception. So Simone and the hundreds of others who are not letting this be swept under the rug are doing something historic, not just for the sport but for society as a whole. Never before have atrocities like this been dealt with publicly, where the pervert was properly punished. Now we are going through the several organizations who also enabled said pervert.

      Yes and I hate to say it but I saw her as just wanting attention/trying to stay relevant at the time. It seemed to be sour grapes on her part--would she had made those accusations if she had been Olympic champion in 1996? Also, since she also had major problems with her parents it seemed like she was a troubled young woman lashing out at everyone. And I didn't want to believe the Karolyis were abusive. Honestly we really need to take a look back at the whole system through the 1990s and 2000s. I wonder where the Karolyis are hiding out.

    • @captainbryce1
      @captainbryce1 5 років тому

      @@candacebordelonph.d.8890 I don't think the Karolyis themselves were sexually abusive. But they were physically abusive, and they did look the other way and ignore sexual abuse allegations from the gymnasts because protecting their athletes wasn't the priority - winning was. It's not that they were intentionally fostering sexual abuse, it's just that they didn't care, which is sad and pathetic.

    Gymnastics fans have to realize how lucky we are to be living in the era that we are and witnessing the greatness that we are witnessing. There has never been a gymnast like Simone Biles before, and will likely never be another. She is a one-of-a-kind! There have been many great gymnastics champions in the past. Larisa Latynina for decades had more Olympic medals than any other athlete (until Michael Phelps came along). Nadia Comaneci, the first gymnast to record a perfect 10 at the Olympics and really popularized the sport internationally. Mary Lou Retton, the first American to ever win the Olympic gold in the all-around. The Magnificent 7, the first American team gold medalists (including Kerri Strug and her iconic vault). Svetlana Khorkina, the first gymnast to win 3 world all-around titles. Gabby Douglas, the first African-American Olympic all-around champion. But none of them have ever pushed the sport the way that Simone Biles has. None of them had won every all-around competition they entered for 6 straight years! None of them have ever consistently destroyed the competition by 2 - 3 points over their nearest competitor. None of them invented new moves each year that were previously deemed impossible! Simone does skills that would be competitive in men's gymnastics. There are only 4 or 5 men who've ever landed a triple double in competition, and two of them are considered to be the very best in the world on floor (Kenzo Shirai and Kohei Uchimura). What Simone does is really unprecedented!

    0:16 "Simone's got enough gold medals, someone give this girl a CROWN!"
    TRUE. She's not just the top athlete, no, she's also standing up against a huge organisation. To protect future generations of gymnasts.
    That takes bravery beyond belief and THAT, my friends, deserves a crown.

      "Why hasn't #45 made a statement" - she said that she is doing it for herself and the passion for the Sport. She also said that she has nothing to prove to anyone. 9 times out of 10, she doesn't care about what #45 thinks, says or even if acknowledges her. A lot of people could learn from her wisdom.

    The sad thing is that if it was anyone other than Simone, USAG would have shut her up by not putting her on teams but now they can’t afford to do that because not only is she the best gymnast in the world but is the most well known. If tomorrow Sunisa or Kara came out saying that USAG was not doing their job they would be shoved to side and would be threatened with no placements on teams forcing them to silence.
