They didn't make burnable laserdiscs
@@Z64sports They actually did, albeit for professional use only.
"Sony CRVdisc" or "RLV" are prime examples.
@@Z64sports Yeah they just grew them on trees

The Wii mini shudders with fear.

It almost makes the PS5 look reasonable
To be fair, Wii mini fears even the regular Wii cause it sucks.
This would be a hilarious computer case
Considering that the Wii XL has a similar if not larger size than a Mid-Tower or Mini-Tower case, it wouldn't be impossible to do that

Little bit too thin to fit any good graphics cards in there. Also the plastic would melt if no proper cooling is supplied, after all single fan isn't ok.
@@CHGOfficial512Not wrong, but low profile graphics cards are still a thing, or a laptop could be repurposed into desktop.
All these modders out here making home consoles smaller and smaller... You went against the grain and made it bigger! Nice job!
He says he’s a big wii fan
Then builds a BIG wii
@PseudoWounds hes a big wii fan with a big wii that has a big wii fan
17:27 for future reference: its best not to solder mains connections. Solder cracks and can allow shorting. You should use insulated crimped spade connectors which push on :)
and they definitely should be individually insulated
oh so THAT'S why those weird connectors are used (I hate them they're so annoying)
"I'm a big wii fan"
*Starts buzzing*
It would be really cool to have the blue ring around the disk drive scaled to the Wii xl
THIS DUDE, made a super entertaining like 20 minute tutorial, actually TAUGHT us how to do so many techniques that were hard to do and options we can use for ourselves, such as those screws, didn't do everything off screen, made an amazing Wii and HAS SUCH FIRE TASTE IN MUSIC!! I am so impressed by this, I actually found you from the Game Rant/Nintendo Life article that featured you and your Wii. Keep up the amazing work! Also, side note, can I just say how much I respect how good of a cat owner you are, you actually made a toy for your cat with 3D printing, that is incredible. You have earned yourself a subscriber!!
Maybe try the GBA next? This XL thing is a really cool concept and I think the Gameboy would be a perfect candidate for such a project.
*GBA Deck*
@@mark030a Exactly! With commonly available consolizer mod kits, you can easily create an XL Gameboy.
That reminded me of someone who stuffed some home console (I think it was an SNES) into a Game Boy Advance travel case that looked like that console itself
That'd be awesome. Either that, or a shell for another console/PC capable of emulating it. Either way I'd want Bringus to do it, he's clearly really good at making custom shells
@@AverageMichaelJordans Bringus is really talented. If he turned some of the things he's done into products, I'd definitely buy them. He's skillful enough to create such a GBA XL.
Fun fact: the sensor bar works by transmitting IR to the Wiimote. This means you can use candles instead as flames also emit IR. The sensor bar isn't a sensor. The name is most likely a pun with censor bar due to the TV theming to the Wii.
Fun Fact: The Wii Remote has never officially been referred to as "Wiimote"
@@Chipmunkboyi do refer to it as a wiimote always have
@@Miketheike123 that changes nothing
You should make a larger one that could fit a real PC capable of emulating wii games at 4k
That would be a pc then
Edit: It's like if I said "Imma turn this chromebook into a bigger chromebook" then proceed to build a separate pc that can emulate a chromebook.

2:05 Laserdisc.
Could have a Wii playing the original Dragon's Lair.
Of course burning a Laserdisc would require extraordinarily rare and expensive equipment plus the almost equally rare industry discs, But TECHNICALLY it can be done.
Can laserdiscs hold 8gb?
please for the love of god set your wii's aspect ratio to 16:9
I look forward to the Wii XXL and XXXL sequels in the years to come :)
Your channel is inspiring and extremely fun to watch. Keep up the great work!
You can get a cheap airbrush (they go as low as like 15$) and paint it that way, and then afterwards spray it with a gloss sealer to make it glossy like the wii. The airbrush will probably prevent it from feeling goopy like spray paint too, since spray paints are usually really thick to fill in scratches and the like, but just putting that craft paint with some thinner through the airbrush should feel no different to how your side panel feels. It should also let you easily use those stencils, if you wanna go that route. The gaps could be filled with some epoxy putties and sanded to fit if you cant reprint it. Awesome build though :D
Yeah he kept saying the video had to get done, but had he been will to spend a lot more time he could have filled/sanded/painted the whole thing and made it look super clean. An air brush with stencils could have done the lettering passably too, but I get not wanting to do that lol
You can get sensor bar extension cables. No need to take it off a motherboard. You would've been quite easily able to add a sensor bar plug onto the back.
Yeah I realized that very recently when I came across one on Amazon. Had no idea that was a thing
weird that that's a thing considering how excessively long the cable is
@@numairdubas2688 I thought the same thing too. But there were some people playing Wii on a projector, where the screen often isn't near the console.
It would be really cool to do a larger version that can fit a Wii and a PC inside. And if possible design it so you could switch between the two using the front buttons
Or a pc that could read wii disks
@@Blavinthat actually wouldn't be too hard.all that you need to do is rip the drive out the wii and throw it in the pc
One big tip or us Wii philosophers. For best screen display results, head to Wii Settings > Screen > Widescreen Settings to change between 4:3 Square and 16:9 Widescreen to accommodate for the clean HD widescreen display. Very impressive work I’ve seen for any Wii in recent memory.
that Wii2HDMI is crazy nostalgia oh gosh
Should have made a Wii shell for a Laserdisc player lol
literally was thinking this as i was watching
same. lol
The proprietary connector which you plug the official sensor bar into just sends power to it. All the electronics and logic to figure how far the Wiimote is from the TV is done on the Wiimote itself.
we need a huge rgb fan array taking up 90% of the space bc wii motherboard can be very small and producing thrust similar to a jet engine
22:53 The adapter you used just outputs the raw Wii signals just like mine: 480i for NTSC signals and 480p for 31khz progressive signals. This is critical for playing the Wii with the lowest latency as possible.
Also, you can just use a wireless or USB-powered sensor bar to play your shooting games like Duck Hunt (WiiMednafen or FCE Ultra GX), Lethal Enforcers (Genesis Plus GX) and Big Buck Hunter Pro, so a CRT is not necessary, as the Wii Remotes instead relied on infrared timing.
Put it all together and do Bondo to fill the gaps, then hand and dremel sand to get it looking right, then paint afterwards. Will give you a nicer more finished look! Watch cosplay construction videos for inspiration!
Wii XL with games on Vinyl discs.
You know you can make it happen.
No, with Laserdisc.
Wouldn’t it be easier to just use a prop resizer?
why the HELL is this so funny
#no
Adding N64 functionality would have justified the size.
if it were up to me, i'd disconnect the og wii's faceplate and wire up the port to the front plate on the xl instead of making linkages. this would also allow for the light around the dvd slot and the sync button
I kinda wanna use that giant WII case as a PC case.
Maybe use it as a case for a PC made for emulation, which is a project that I wanna do one day.
13:37 I can imagine that poor PCB Way employee going, "Oh god, it's Jon again."
To help with prints lifting off the bed, it could help to print with a brim to help with adhesion
Fun video, I think this would be great if you did decide to open up the Wii, so you can just seperate the components out to their respectively correct positioning on the large model. Fun though.
The joys of doing 3d printing and electronics work in pajamas
Fun fact: the reason the sensor bar can be wireless is because the cord doesn’t send anything to the Wii. The cord is only lighting 4 red leds and the wiimote picks up those leds and sends cursor information via Bluetooth
Careful with the USB routing, i design PCBs as a hobby, so if you don't have the USB data lines 90 ohm impedance matched - you can get USB issues
make a gba 3x as long and 1/2 the height
Wiide Boii
I’m a “Big Wii” fan 0:01
I think you should have used the entirety of the Wii as the DVD drive for scale 😂
Edit: So like, instead of sliding a disc into the Wii you slide a Wii into the Wii XL
Hey man, I built this using the files u provided! It works great, and I even managed to add the icons for power, eject and reset! I played Mario Galaxy for hours, then took a bathroom break, and woke up from my dream.
Had me in the first half lol
Make a Wii HD using a SBC like a raspberry pi (although Dolphin can run on a Pi 4, I would not recommend using a pi), remake the wii menu as an emulation station theme, and use dolphin to run it at 1080p.
for sensor bar you could use a cheap 3rd party usb sensor bar
"There's no like big format of DVD I can use in place of a regular DVD"
Could've used a LaserDisk
Or perhaps a CED if you're feeling fancy
really puts into perspective on how much design choices go into making an enclosure
You could have used the fan pcb to power the wii sensor bar, all the sensor bar port does is provide power to 4 ir leds, the actual brains for positioning the pointer are housed in the wiimote
One thing I would have done with your PCB was to add a diode on the + line going to the fan. Fans can also be voltage generators. You don’t want voltage back feeding into your USB port or device.
Yeah in hindsight that would have been a good idea as well as a small fuse or something
I like how he said he still got most of the disk at 18:32
"i've been playing this thing since i was a little kid"
holy SHIT i forgot how old the wii was
you can glue pla permanently with CA glue. It sort of welds the plastic together. Need to wet both sides and let it sit for a bit, then push them together with a bit of force to make a good bond.
the song is Whimsical Waters from Mario Party 10 in case someone's wondering
( i had a headache trying to remember where i listened this song)
Your channel blew up so fast, congratulations! Keep it up, you’re doing an outstanding job!

From GameCube Mini to Wii XL. Amazing channel
“big format of a dvd i can use”
Did you forget vinyl records exist, you couldve made a wii style record player, my boy!
you gotta learn friction welding for plastics, you can merge parts way better than using glue
You should shove 4 wiis into one big wii and make it a lan party BEAST
You look and sound like AntDude from memory. Other than that, great video! I love tech stuff that I barely understand and it all just goes into my subconscious until a decade later where I'll remember it all of a sudden and it will help me out a bunch, so yeah I enjoy this kind of content.
I feel you, parts lifting from the plate mid print is a major PITA
you can use a USB sensor bar anyway, they're like $8
If this burns down my apartment I'll do a giveaway for it LMAO
"Perhaps even an answer to that universal question: Why?" - Doc Brown, 2015
Man, I love your crazy ideas. I have no idea of how to make stuff like this, so this might be a stupid question, but could you use some kind of white putty to mask the gaps in the front faceplate?
Yeah I probably could, there's probably some white bondo or something out there. Really hoping that I can find a company that can do the whole thing in one go
I know I'm like a year late and somebody might have suggested this as well. You can get waterslide decal paper and just print them yourself.
TIP FOR WII USERS:
GO TO THE HOME BUTTON, SETTINGS/REMOTE, SELECT CHANGE PLAYERS, THAN PRESS 1 AND 2 TO SYNC NEW REMOTES!

In Japan, it's called the Wii LL.
if you use two levers, it would allow you to press the button, and then all you have to do is adjust their positioning and length to get them to hit the button just right
the alternative is some sort of stupid, maybe hydraulic, system that slides back and forth, that might not work reliably, same for the sync button
you could also use pogo pins and dupont pins that are shoved into the IR connector, and basically make a rather crude, but otherwise functional, connection to the outside for an actual sensor bar, if you didnt want to install it into the MegaWii as it is
I love that he assesss his mistakes
It woulda been cooler to have a retractable plug for the power instead of making that odd adapter. So you vould still have the brick inside but the rest outside, with it going in or out for storage.

"If this burns down my apartment I'll do a giveaway for it'' *SUPER MARIO 3D WORLD INTRO MUSIC*
there are some things I would have done differently, first, I would have made an adapter that can output HDMI to HDMI and composite. second, I would have kept the Wii sensor bar. third, I would have used adapters for the GameCube controllers and memory cards. fourthly, I would have an adapter where you have 2 SD card slots (though it would be hard not having the Wii write to both SD cards. fifthly, I would have allowed the eject button to pe pressed and also replace the Wii disc drive (one for Wii games and the Wii disc drive for GameCube games) and the list goes on including a Wii mote XL and Nun chuck XL, the sync button having a button, upgrading to FOUR usb slots (2 usb-a and 2 usb-c (though like the SD card I would have no idea on how for the Wii to recognize four usb slots with adapters) for usb c compatibility) a second SSD, and something that you would have to carry over is all the text, stickers, engraved text, all the icons, and the ATI logo ( opposite of the Nintendo logo) and also the ability to use 4 or 6 memory cards to combine into one would be great (my issue is with the SD cards and not rally the usb issue because the Wii might write to all 3 memory sticks) and some fun stuff (but completely optional) would be the ability for the Wii to support every video output out there and the ability to run NES, SNES, GB, GBC, GBA, N64, the freaken VIRTRAL BOY, and a lot more (not like the ds or ps3) without emulation.
Hopefully you can use this to improve appon the Wii xl.
There's no big dvd replacement that I could use! lazerdisk:
now all we need is for the 3ds to become XL
"No big DVD"
Laserdisk would like to have a word.
2:05 effing laserdisc would've been hilarious
nah. just worse.
19:43 A little late and probably past the point of worrying about it (also looks mostly fine to me at the end of the vid,) but Bondo or the like is a decent way to deal with gaps like that. Helpful to have in general, really. Helps pretty up all the things I don't want to waste all the time and plastic reprinting.
i think if u just drybrush thru the stencil, it wont come out blobby, might take 2 or 3 layers but since its drybrush, it takes less than a second for it to dry
I think that the body was given was given by the gods because it fits snug in your TV stand without taking too much space
The wife and I still have every console from present day back except a dreamcast . I gotta nail that one down
There's totally a "big format of 'DVD'" you could have used! The first thing I thought when I saw the thumbnail was, "Oh! I want him to put a LaserDisc player in there!" I mean you can't play games off them (except Dragon's Lair) but aren't there modern replacements for the Wii's DVD drive anyway?
I love how the argument why this Wii is better than the original is just that it takes 12 times the volume.
this man is a legend, truly a good time to be alive
With the DVD Drive, you probably get a tab to do a simple usb disc reader like you did for the fan, and tor the girthy prints you can print it diagnoly with supports on it, you can use lychee slicer to automaticly get supports in your prints. hope this help in the future.
"there's no big DVD format i could use"
Missed opportunity to fit in vinyl
A good idea for enlarging the power brick would be adapting an xbox 360 power supply to it. :D
2:05
Missed opportunity to not try throwing a Laserdisc player into the Wii just for the form factor and no other reason
I don't know much about Linux but I've always wondered if you could use it through some combination with retroarch or dolphin specifically to essentially make it a Wii through and through. Like you turn on the system and it boots into dolphin automatically
Would probably work, but dolphin's wii system menu emulation is still a bit rough around the edges and can crash or get random bugs from time to time
@@shadesoftime Nifty! Thanks for the info
Nintendo is going to build one of these for the Nintendo Museum for use with the Giant Wiimotes.
The SD extender alone is so cursed, I never saw that coming. Cool build!
OMG, you know what would be sick? Old radios and that had cd players had three slots that spun around. So you could with cds without taking them out. That system but here.
I have a cricut I could cut them for you if you wish, FOC just would need the measurments of each logo
Save up that Patreon and sponsorship money, it'll come in handy when Nintendo's lawyers find this video😂
Jokes aside, I think you did a great job! I also grew up with a Wii, and I'm really enjoying all your Wii related content.
I don't know why you would need a proprietary connection for the sensor bar if its literally just and infrared LED you can just use 2 candles and you wouldn't fell a difference
