    Corkscrews are really good at getting knots out of small diameter rope.

    It’s a fun MT to collect. But outside locking and Philips driver, Victorinox Compact provides these functions in a much lighter/simpler package, albeit probably not as much “cool factor”.

    Appears to be the same corkscrew as on the Juice series. A 3/32 inch ferrocerium fire stick will fit nicely into the corkscrew. Wrap it with waxed jute and you have an emergency fire starting kit.

      I think they’re trying too hard with the names. I mean Europe75 to commemorate the trip that inspired Tim Leatherman….when the first leatherman tool was not a pocket knife. And as you said, with the legalities in Europe, the name choice is questionable I think. The only one that made sense was Mr Crunch for batch 001!

    Despite a lot of rather mixed opinions I've heard about this batch even putting aside the issues people have of the entire garage series, I really like this one. It actually brings some less common features to the sak style multitool market, like all locking and one handed tools, and does it with great fit and finish. Also imo it is exceptionally sexy and I just love the touch of color on the corkscrew lever. I'd give it about 50$-60$.

      I do love the toolset on this one. As far as cost goes though, I think the T4 is $70 dollars and it’s the closest analog and that’s a regular production tool. I don’t know how much of a cost difference it is to produce these scales and the corkscrew assist, but absolutely the cerakote is an added cost. So too is the milling done on the Philips driver. I don’t know what the actual value should be, but it definitely is significantly better than T4.

    • @phasesofjc2123
      @phasesofjc2123  Рік тому

      You’re right and even their new swisstools have OHO blades. But still the rest of the tools are opened by fingernail, and I just can’t go back to that. One hand opening on everything and even two handed with gloves on, I just can’t even consider anything that doesn’t allow for it. For example my charge+ with g10 scales and s30v blade has objectively superior materials to my FREE P4, with one hand blades as well…. Sits in the drawer because FREE P4 is just faster and easier to use. Got me out of binds where I had one hand free while supporting something heavy. Didn’t mean to just start gushing over the FREE platform, but the seconds that one hand operation saved me in some critical tasks actually equate to the tool paying for itself in my use.

      This one’s getting so close to a toolset I want! I don’t think toolset in a knife can get much better than Victorinox Outrider, but I can’t quit the FREE architecture. If Europe75 had a saw, it would be perfect in my eyes! I really like their idea of milling out a relief into that Phillips driver.

    • @phasesofjc2123

      Mr Crunch is the best by far. It was a beautiful homage to the company origin. Yea Darkside was practically just the Tom Sachs charge. Parts wasn’t better than any production Benchmade…yea sure it’s a totally original design for leatherman, but that’s not enough to make it good! As far as this Europe75, it happens to have a toolset that I prefer, and the build quality is way better than Parts’!

      @@phasesofjc2123 the entire "limited to x units" tactic is a con. This kind of artificial scarcity is what allows them to way overcharge on these tools and have even some spare springs sell out in minutes to be kept in a spotless glass case for collectors to jizz at or sold by the scalpers who take advantage of those poor sods at 500% markup at least.

    • @phasesofjc2123
      @phasesofjc2123  Рік тому

      @@guy3nder529 I see your point and I don’t disagree. I think there is some nuance though. The garage stuff is supposed to let them try new things without committing to full production, so I think limited production makes sense but they need to reevaluate their unit quantities. I mean 500 of Mr Crunch isn’t enough. But if it’s full production, who’s gonna buy it, because those “needle nose” pliers are really bad. FREE P4 is just better. Batch 003 parts? No one wants that. They even had it go back for sale weeks after it “sold out.” Batch 1,2,4 they really really needed to make more, but are they good enough for full production? Honestly I think this Europe75 would be the only one that makes sense to be put into full production.

      I never like sheaths for pocket knives/tools. Pocket carry only for me! I will say that I don’t like NOT having a pocket clip. Just like a victorinox SAK, this one just falls to the bottom of the pocket horizontally. It’s small and light enough to get away with that though.

    Leatherman USA is company name. It has to have over 70% of components made in the USA and assembled in the USA to get the the Made in the USA. Leatherman lost a few lawsuits because of the Made in the USA over having less than 70% of the components made in the USA along with their multi tool sheath’s all made in China. I love Leatherman multi tool’s but a lot of people are misinformed about being made in the USA.

    • @phasesofjc2123
      @phasesofjc2123  Рік тому

      Close. Company name is Leatherman Tool Group, Inc. Made in USA is a legal term, which as you said, is defined as 70% of it has to be made here. But the label is not applied to the company as a whole, it’s applied to the tool itself, should it meet that criteria. The lawsuit was due to advertising suggesting it was 100% made in USA (if I remember right). The fact is that such legal definitions exist in all industries. Just like “Swiss Made” on a Swiss watch. You’re right there’s a distinction between “Made in USA” and something being advertised as “100% made in America” but I don’t think it’s something to get hung up on. Do you really want to see labels say 80% made in America or 95.4% made in America? How microscopic should it get? This is why we have definitions like that. And if the only thing to get the label will be things 100% made in America, we won’t see anything, I think! The fact is that “Made in USA” is better than “Assembled in USA” and even better than “Designed in USA”

    • @lawrencehubbard2985
      @lawrencehubbard2985 Рік тому +1

      @@phasesofjc2123 No actually it was a large group of Leatherman buyers who brought the the civil suit against them. The other lawsuit against them was filed by the Government because they had bid on government contracts and the contract said 100% made in the USA not assembled from parts from other countries. They have lost numerous lawsuits and they no longer even try to file for government contracts. Bear and Son’s are 100% made in the USA. The Gerber multi tools and knives that the government buys are all built in the USA including the sheath. Ever look at where the Leatherman sheath and pliers heads come from? If you said China you are correct. My point was and is that they can only put assembled in the USA with parts made overseas. The name like Gerber SOG and other knives/multi tools manufacturers have multiple names filed in the patent office.
