I mean, you're not wrong, but as you showed, potholes encourage going faster, and the idea behind the speed bumb is to get drivers to go slower
if there's anything I learned from this video, it's that potholes do less damage the faster you go, unless they're too big in which case your car will be equally distributed across the road
"bump" there you go i corected you
well the potholes can stop people going 30 in a 60, its just as useful, it keeps slow drivers from causing disruptions on fast traffic, and fast drivers from causing disruptions in slow traffic
"corrected" here you go your typo has ben fixed

You should test this again with speed bumps and pot holes of realistic size.

The problem with speedbumps is that they are usually excesively tall. You want people to slow down, not to fucking destroy their oil pans.
I’d be happy with that for me I’d probably lose everything at the bottom of my car from my exhaust, oil pan, and suspension since my car sets low

You should be doing these at more normal speeds. 25-30mph, cuz those are speeds most people drive at, and it's not fast enough to create a velocity where the wheels barely fall off the ground. At 25mph, there is more time for the front of the car to dip.
Dry potholes aren't a bad idea but when it rains and fills with water, you've essentially induced aquaplaning unnecessarily. To rid this problem, expensive infrastructure is needed to keep them functional but bumps are rather cheap and self maintaining.
Also bumps are way more dramatic, that's an automatic win!
Actually when there’s water there may be more grip that in the air, so it’s actually aquagripping

The worst is when they fill with water and just look like a puddle, until you hit it and damage your wheels or suspension. Been there done that...
actually is a bad idea, you can see that there's no demanding even though they're going too fast, the principal idea is: if you don't slow down this is going to happen
with actual potholes that you come across on the road, their jagged edges can tear up your tires. plus, potholes are rarely long enough to affect both tires, meaning the suspension and tires will be more worn out on one side than the other, causing an imbalance.
Speed bumps are designed as a penalty system. You go fast, you pay the price of hearing your car suffer

Sort of, but that's more a byproduct of it not being able to stop you from going faster. They should be tuned so that you can go the stated speed limit without any issues and go a bit faster. We've got ones that are engineered to travel at roughly 30mph without any problems. But you will be tossed around a bit if you're going excessively fast.
@@SmallSpoonBrigade 3:26 lol. That's what speed bumps feel like.
Generally I would recommend drivers to slow down whenever they approach speed bumps or potholes. The video is just an illustration of the danger of not slowing down on speed bumps, but taking note that potholes are not 100% safe
Yes, speed bumps are installed with a specific speed in mind, if you drive that speed, then there should be little issue with driving over it. The ones that people are most used to are ones that are designed to be driven at like 5mph, but I've seen ones engineered for 25-30mph by making them much longer and going the designed speed you still have a very smooth ride.

haha youre right
Realworld physics? i dont think so, have good destruction physics, but cars couldnt jump this way, with bumps o holes, simply because car´s suspension. Lowers car could suffer more in bumbs, and the holes could do a lot of damage in cars without low plate. Vehicles with bigs wheels are less afected by both.
Meh, "real world physics" could be interpreted as many times different as many laws of kinetics * calculation simplifications there are. Simple fact: lab computers more expensive compared to gaming ones, while having less Flopps, why? They are more precise.
100% not real physics
Thanks for showing us why speedbumps are more effective than potholes , pothole do basically less damagr the faster you go so they encourage you to go faster , speedbumps damage your car if you go fast over them so they encourage you to slow down , and also if you go slow over a pothole your frontwheel will get stuck ... And if you go fast enough over it you wont even get slowed down ...
The issue here is that most of the potholes you placed made the car smack into a curb while mid air. I get that both of them are supposed to do damage but a realistic pothole (which wouldn't even be this big) would have an even height both on the entrance and exit.
true, but potholes are usually non-perfect circles tho, making the entry and exit not sync-ed.
@@Looo0007 It still wouldn't rip the entire bottom end off of the car though.

This test is totally unfair. Given the reason for which speedbumps exist you should try to approach both the structures with a lower speed, instead of faster. And then you'll see which one of the two deals less damage with speed being slower (a little spoiler: it's the speedbump). It's a funny video, and beamng crashes are entertaining to watch, but it's definitely not informative.

also for this to be fair potholes would need more rounded edges, reversing a shape doesn't make it fair.
You are comparing apples and oranges. Each serves a different purpose. To teach laws of physics this is perfect.
Big fan of the simulation, placing beams and all. Good work
I would argue that the biggest issue with this video is the high-speed testing: your previous video about "what speed do cars have to go to jump over potholes?" showed that the faster a car moves, the larger a pothole it can safely cross.
At extremely high speeds, everything can cross potholes with minimal damage, since at most it will only be the bottom of the tires falling enough to hit the far end of the pothole.
At the same time, the faster you go into a speed bump, the less time your car's suspension has to adjust to the new road height, and the larger your vertical velocity will become after some of your horizontal speed is changed to a vertical bounce by the bump.
Speed bumps are literally designed to be crossed at low speeds, and potholes are also the most devestating at medium speeds (slow enough for the car's frame to fall into contact with the far end, but fast enough to have a large amount of kinetic energy at play when the car's forward velocity instantly drops to 0).
This plus the speed bumps seemed so fucking steep in this, and it literally launched cars into the air. Maybe it's just a country thing, but I have never seen a speed bump this tall and this steep.

@@EmilyAliceTempest I have seen some nasty speed bumps in Slovakia, having the T3 Syncro I usually don't slow down and hit them easily in around 30mph, but the bad ones did launch me in the air even in those low-ish speeds. So yes, they do exist at least somewhere. :-D

Try the hospital speed bumps in NZ, those sob’s are like squares and are angry as hell
I have a lot of them in my city deigned at a pretty high angle and it suck since my car sets low from factory
either does the potholes, especially the part after the lowest part, wich looks like a speed bump set diagonally, otherwise the violent surface change would make the wheel jump at regular driving (and encourage speeding up), so they are a bit less deep, but longer

Try some of the plastic inserts some industrial lots use. It is impossible to drive over those without feeling like you're on a knifeblade.
Speed bumps are made so drivers learn to maintain moderate vehicle speed and slow down when they are visible. Speeding towards a speed bump is indeed damaging to the vehicle to teach those drivers to drive responsibly
Yes, and that's entirely the point, you're going to have knuckleheads that ignore the speed bumps and speed anyways, but for the rest of us, the penalty is usually relatively minor as most people don't speed by that much and it helps avoid having to write traffic tickets.
Hence proved that speedbumps are effective tools to deter overspeeding.
Hahah exactly! This test is dumb. Need to go slower

ua-cam.com/video/5g5Orxs6An0/v-deo.html🧡🙂
Depends on the size of the speedbump. If it's smaller than the loaded suspension travel on your vehicle then usually it's more comfortable to cross them at extremely high speeds. Some guy made a video testing this in real life.
Bro you're vids are great, love the detail and realistic scenarios.
I suppose it all depends on speed; if you’re going fast enough, you may just glance straight over the pothole without being affected by it too much. On the contrary however, if you speed into a speedbump, it’ll send you flying much like in the video. Alternatively, if you go slowly over a pothole, your car will sink into it of course and it’ll be a much bumpier, disorienting maneuver, whereas if you go slowly over a speedbump, (like you’re supposed to) basically nothing will happen, unless you’re in a very low-to-the-ground super car, then the bottom may have a risk of getting scratched up a little. Probably not, I don’t know much about cars lol

In the state i live in (arizona), im starting to see that cities are starting to use more potholes than speedbumps, specifically in neighborhoods. Main point being that speed bumps are more visible so one can easily slow down and minimise damage. With potholes on the other hand you are less likely to notice until it's too late. As a mechanic it's more likely that people have troubles to their vehicle after a nasty pothole they missed rather than because they got their car airborne off a speedbump

The major issue with a pothole is when the tyre smashes on the edge of the pothole which almost certainly destroys any wheel with a low profile(small sidewall) tyre as the tyre cannot absorb the impact leading to rim damage. On the other hand the suspension should be able to adjust according to the profile of the speed bumps when the vehicle is traveling whithin the bump's designed speed range. BTW Great Video 😁👍🏻

7:34 The real reason the 1900-1940's cars have the most safety is because since cars in those days were so dangerous, people were preferring horses instead, so most car companies made the cars less dangerous (of course they were still dangerous, but since they go so slow, it was a major win for the car companies in those days.)

...when car encounters pothole car's drivetrain slows down, but driver has tendency to fly out the car's windshield (blue car on 4:30 basically has destroyed windshield). Speed bump on the other hand forces whole car upwards keeping driver inside. Unfortunately when car ultimately lands driver will suffer secondary hit from below where there's no airbags.
Hitting a pothole with wheels can make significant damage to rims and tires since potholes have "sharp" edges. Speed bumps on the other hand have rounded edges so in theory there won't be any significant damage to the rims and tires is speed is adequate...

BeamNG is pretty accurate, though potholes will never be an intentionally made concrete trench. Thus in real life, it's not often so rewarding to skip over a pothole quickly. They're randomly shaped, placed and there can be more where there's one. Plus their elevation levels can at times be different. So you simply just wanna avoid going over/into them. Speedbumps... well apart from them never being so huge as in the video, are usually best if ya go over em slow. That's why they're speedbumps...

Car manufacturers to customers be like : we don't want peace, we want problems, always.
New title "speed bumps working as intended"
Engineers are much educated for this that they made speed bumps not poth holes . In pothholes only speeding car or vehicle can pass otherwise it ll stuck but that's not the case in bumps.pothholes causes very acute pressure on the tyre which can lead to breaking of alloy of car or other mishaps like suspension allignment issues.
I was walking and hurt my leg on a speed bump.
I walked a bike path for 15 years, no bump.
The walkway declines into road to allow bikers to ride on smoothly, but with the speedbump there now I slammed my foot into it while power walking and almost hyper extended my leg and tripped.
So fundamantaly the aim is to slow cars down. That's why we put speedbumps in areas like residential zones or school zones. We don't want cars barreling down at 100mph just to avoid some beam deformation in those areas. So the right thing to hit on the road would be the breaks.
SUV : *lost one tire
Also SUV : It's okay
Well, here in brazil the bumps are called “spring-breakers”, because you can ruin your car’s suspension by going too fast. This is what makes it work.
Disclaimer: "No cars were harmed during this"
You've got one acting like a ramp at high speeds...that's always going to be worse 😆
Midtown madness!
Also that old monster truck pc game built into pcs way back in the day
I have literally lost a tyre to a pothole while driving at 60kmph. These tests assume a perfect suspension which can uncompress and compress perfectly without any delay or without passing on any of the impact. It also does not take into account what the sudden lip does to a fully compressed tyre.
Wait wat, this is an actual serious video from carpal
Luckily for us, Speed Bumps aren’t just placed randomly into highways where you are going way over 30 miles a hour. Fun to watch car flailing about but not really riveting commentary on Speed Bumps and Potholes.
Nice game I like it 🙂🥰🙏 pls upload more such as..
A simple explanation is that with enough speed, the wheel does not have time to descend deep into the whole, effectively making it shallower, whereas the wheels have to clear the full height of the bump all the time.
In my country "speedbump" is called "spring breaker" (Quebra-Mola), I think you can see why
I'm Brazilian
So unless you want to die you have to slow down, so it's effective 😅
Well pot holes are generally just a nuisance but speed bumps are a huge headache. The speed bump are often made larger then needed so people don't just fly over them, but often the only reasonable way to safely pass speed bumps is to completely slow down.
In India, both speed-breakers as well as potholes are huge at places. Moreover, many of the speed breakers are not even marked. Also, some potholes come up on an otherwise good road, so cause more damage due to speed..
Basically, watch your speed if you want to save your car, and more importantly, your life..
Yeah, but what about lower speeds. As in someone doing a 60 in a 30 mph zone. Or someone pealing out of a parking lot doing 40? At more realistic speeds rather than highway speeds which is worse? When you're fast you can possibly glide over a pothole, but when you're going fast, but not so fast as to go over the pothole you're looking at a much... different situation. You always do high end, worse case scenario speeders, but this doesn't answer my question around actually driven speeds.
Maybe because you made the speedbump a half cylinder which isnt really a speedbump, more like a really bad ramp. And the car going over the pothole is going fast enough that it just goes right over the "pothole"
K, after watching the whole video, ill rewrite my comment (lil too eager to share my thoughts).
The tests were good, but quite unfair and unreasonable. If youre gonna test something, test for its best form/shape. Both need to be the best shape they can be to test which one is better at the job without doing unnecessary damage to vehicles. Secondly, how do they wear, as time goes on and more vehicles pass over and weather beats on the devices. Ik its just a game, but im incredibly curious as to applications. We have very small "buzzers" on each side of the rode but they are meant to make noise, alert the driver. I did truly enjoy the tests, very interesting. Just being overly curious about realistic application.
“maybe a pothole will do more damage on a low car”
**speedbump launches car into air seconds later**
lets say u are driving on pothhole on speed like 60km/hr the body of the car might be fine but he suspension will it takes suspension a certain time duration after at it's initial position and if are driving fast then the suspension will get pressure from the mass of the car and affect it and might even cost u to repair or change it, it also affects the tires also if they are old.
