Explanation: the archon separated her divinity and humanity having furina the humanity rule Fontaine while focalors the divinity worked on saving Fontaine from a prophecy doomed to kill everyone in Fontaine except for the archon. Focalors eventually killed herself to return all the power of the hydro archon back to “that guy” the hydro dragon so that as the iudex he could save everyone from the prophecy while when focalors died furina lost her curse of immortality and became a normal human and citizen of Fontaine.people stopped seeing furina as the archon bc the max and Fontaine allogenes held a trial to prove that furina wasn’t the real archon. Furina started crying on her “throne” which started the prophecy but it was never the real hydro archon crying deceiving the heavens and saving everyone then everyone goes hooray.

Allow me! cough as a noob with lore knowledge on Genshin Furina ISN'T the archon, her divine self, Focalors, IS the archon. Neuvilette is just the hydro dragon, not the archon. Technically in this case, yes, Furina is TECHNICALLY the archon thanks to Focalors, but NO, there is no 5th/Hydro archon because the throne for it was destroyed at the same time Focalors was executed. I love Furina btw🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡
I'll take it upon myself to explain it (spolier warnings ahead) So basically the previous archon Egeria at this point had deceased and a big calamity had finished, leaving a new archon spot open. Earlier, Egeria made neohumans out of water creatures called oceanids using the sea where all life came from. As this was a new lifeform, she and her new humans were condemned by the higher gods above for creation and given a prophecy that all Fontainian citizens will dissolve in a flood with the Hydro Archon alone. Following this, Focalors was appointed the new Hydro Archon and granted the symbol of the Hydro Archon (the Gnosis, holding the power of original dragon rulers, one being Neuvilette of Hydro) and divinity. To save Fontanians from being dissolved while not being caught by Celestia, Focalors split herself into her human body and her divinity to curse her human mirror to pretend to be the Hydro archon without knowing the consequences, living until the Hydro Archon ceased and could not fulfill her own life until Focalors had enough belief energy behind-the-scenes to destroy the Hydro Archon role forever and give the Hydro Gnosis' power back to Neuvilette, effectively killing her and ensuring no more Hydro Archon. She basically betted on Neuvilette forgiving the neohuman Fontainians and turning them into real humans and wouldn't dissolve. Furina is TECHNICALLY the archon however with none of the divinity making her an ACTUAL god meaning she's a normal human. While Neuvilette is the dragon sovereign of hydro, and now with his original power, acting as the nation's leader.
TL;DR Neuvillette is not the Archon he's the Hydro Dragon Sovereign and the current ruler of Fontaine after Furina stepped down from her role following Focalors' execution. Furina wasn't even the Archon to begin with, she was just acting as one for the past 500 years in order to perfect the execution method and challenge the Heavenly Principals into fulfilling the prophecy that Fontaine will drown along with its people. She was, in a sense, Focalors' puppet. After Focalors executed herself, Furina stepped down as an archon and became fully human, while Neuvi regained his powers, cleansed the people of Fontaine off their sins and took Furina's position as the nations ruler. Neither of them are an Archon, Fontaine is currently Archonless Also, fun fact: Neuvillette despises the title of Archon and even mocks them from time to time. Archons took the powers of the seven elemental dragons and claimed them as their own, so he was able to regain his powers after Focalors executed herself.

It appears that the Sovereigns are the real owners of the elements in Teyvat which were taken by the Archons at a point. As far as I can see, the story may conclude with the abolishment of other (if not all) Archon thrones.
