Hellblade 2 Preview Reaction: The New State Of The Art For Unreal Engine 5?

- It's been difficult to get to grips with Hellblade 2's previous reveals - the quality of the presentation is not a good match for UA-cam compression. However, direct feed capture from Microsoft is of a much higher quality and we recently received the raw asset. So, this is what we make of the game's presentation based on the most recent materials and it's looking seriously impressive.

The first game was so incredible when wearing headphones. It isn't so much the graphics that excite me. They did things with the audio in the first game that made me feel very much in her shoes and not to spoil the first game for people but I very much felt what it was like to have those problems.
VERY MUCH this. That Valravn sequence gave me goosebumps.
It's called binaural sound. The second game has it as well according to John Linneman.
@@cube2fox they put a lot of effort into talking with people that had mental illnesses and those that looked after them which really showed up well in the game. a lot of the input was binaural and questiong, accusing which is close to the experience of schizophrenia with a slightly lighter dose of visual hallucinations (which are much less common) - it was a good representation of disordered thinking that some people have.
lol that's the reason I couldn't play it. Too many flashbacks ^
Mentions audio first and then graphics. No mention of the gameplay. Hilarious and vey telling.

Lumen reflections are a mix of SSR and raytraced based of signed distance field mesh or quality one using hardware raytracing.
A lot of games do this with RT reflections in water and I get why they do it (fidelity) but I wish they let you disable it as personally I prefer the lowres RT over constantly seeing the SSR fading in and out, its hugely distracting. The whole point to me of using RT reflections is to fix that and the occlusion issues.
SSR needs to die anywhere without a fixed camera, such as racing games. Although those suffer the worst occlusion issues when going under bridges so well I guess SSR just need to die period.
@@alexatkin so SSR is the software "baked in" lighting rendering right? and lumen is a mixture of SSR and hardware reflections.. WE need to know how much is the play within the mixture. Is it 90% hardware accel RT that's not bad at all. Either way, this looks like real real real RT a lot of it, DF can point out some Lumen use, but he knows too, the hardware RT used here, being pushed here, using UE5 as a base engine, is INSANE use of RT and UE5 implementation. One of the best UE5 games, we haven't played yet thoug

@@weplayvrgames you stressed over a game that nobody on Xbox has to buy and those with high-end PCs will run at higher settings. Series X is old budget tech now no 💩 Devs had to use various techniques to run a UE5 game on it. PS5 got nothing to worry about.
@@weplayvrgames I just love how you're saying "quit crying" to someone who accepts the way the game runs, while moaning about that exact thing in the same sentence.
Each person decides what is acceptable. Personally I’d take 60fps with less impressive graphics. Graphics don’t impress me anymore. Last time I was impressed with graphics alone was probably around the original Bioshock and Crysis in 2007. Gameplay and story is what matters to me. But to each his own. 100%, clear as day. All the tech in the world, but none of the attention to detail for the art team to 'put shit where it should be in fixed cutscenes'. Typical of 'AAA' in the last decade.

@@darrenparr7948 Well you can make mistakes like this with offline rendering too. Avengers Endgame had Iron man infinity stone glove clip through Thanos hands. Never thought I would live to see the day that fancy new graphics no longer had any impact on me but here we are. It meant so much back in the day to render what couldnt be represented, fingers, stairs, mouths and tiny details but the ROI on these graphics just isnt making games BETTER anymore.
I'm starved for advancements in deeper things like npc and enemy a.i, emergent systems and simulation.
The extra geometry and texture fidelity just aint that impressive anymore, we are already able to create stunning looking stuff that is extremely pleasing to the eye, the only thing left now is to try make things photorealistic which is really novel but not that interesting from a pure gaming perspective.
Gaming peaked long ago , now it's just for the masses who care more about resolutions than the actual gameplay itself
@@anonymousanonymous3707 i dont care about resolution, but i do about graphics fidelity. Resolution does not add to immersion, but realism does. And audio, especially in a game like this. I feel like the game is so focused on cinemartics that it's going to feel like it's playing itself using the suggestion of inputs from the player.
Lacklustre to say the least.

Can someone explain letter boxing?
Also, is the real resolution the lower from letter boxing or the actual 1440?
Letter boxing is referring to the black bars at the top and bottom of the image. Since the game doesn't have to render in these areas, you could say the resolution is lower by that amount.
@@SimonVaIe So the game is going to have black bars top and bottom? That seems crazy.
@@tylerochs5253 yes, as you can see in the video. You might be able to turn them off on PC.
The problem is effectively that the game is rendered at a different aspect ratio than most monitors and TV's are built: usually those displays are 16:9, the game might be 21:9 or something similar. The mismatch leads to black borders (can also be on the sides, eg. if the game would render at 4:3).
While it's not often that games do this since quite some years ago (we are pretty settled on 16:9 screens after all, so that's usually what games output at, not to mention many games can be run at different aspect ratios as needed), this certainly isn't the first game to do so. In the end it's mostly for performance reasons, they can say it's a cinematic experience (since movies typically have a wide aspect ratio as well and you often see black borders on TV's when watching a movie) but they reduce the resolution to primarily increase the performance.

Agree on the softness, but if this is xsx fidelity, major kudo's for ninja theory for showing the actual footage and setting expectations instead of a bumped up version on a RTX4090. I am hyped for the game can't wait to experience this game, Hellblade 1 was an absolute banger of a game.
This is going to look incredible on pc
I think "concern" is a bit strong for anything you have to screenshot and zoom in to see.
They pause and zoom to overcome small screens and UA-cam compression. Keep up.
@@DroneCorpse I don't understand how that isn't obvious to anyone watching 😂
@@DroneCorpse You're not wrong. However, it IS somewhat the case that the DF nerds (and I love 'em all) ARE extremely sensitive to minor image quality and frame issues compared to the average gamer. That's good, they need to be for the job.. but I also occasionally find some of their criticisms nitpicks that I'd never have noticed in a million years.
@@satekeeperreally? The ones I find sensitive are the ones constantly talking about how DF is "nit-picking" as if detailed graphical analysis isn't the reason we're all here.
@@DanKaschel Well I don't know who that is. I've been a DF fan for many years and this is the first and only time I've mentioned it or even seen anyone else do so. Don't see anyone "constantly" doing it here.
Watching people pull apart this commercial you guys made is rather entertaining. The cuts from CGI cutscene to character models is a little jarring.
Yet somehow they still compared the CGI model with in-game model of first game , these guys go through this stuff frame by frame so you know they seen it , clear advert for Microsoft
I still remember the days of early 3D when a character's mouth moving at all when they spoke was impressive 😄
Or when they finally had fingers 😂😂
Oh man that extra geometry and increased fidelity on textures will COMPLETELY change the entire gaming landscape! This will take our gameplay to the next level, now we can transcend to the NEXT-GEN with this increase in fidelity and geometric detail, gaming will NEVER be the same!!!
30fps , 964p..........are you kidding ?
It is a technique to get more detail on screen. It won't change the gaming landscape anywhere near as much as an ssd or a decent cpu did
I just can't get enough of UE5's post-processing. Nanite and Lumen are great, but the DoF, motion blur, lens flares look like taken straight from a Hollywood movie.
Womp womp
@@12xenn45This "argument" is especially pointless in regards to this particular game. Hellblade is heavily reliant on post processing effects like film grain, DoF and motion blur to capture the filmic look that's one of the key ingredients of its immersive nature. Disabling any of them in this particular title would be rather unwise decision.
Not everything is a competitive shooter where you strive for high framerate and relative visual clarity to spot enemies more easily. The "post-processing bad, I'm a true gamer and turn that shit off" narrative should've died long ago, as the redundant oversimplification it is.
@@zSEN. my exact thoughts, thanks!
@@zSEN. It's difficult to talk to people like this guy. It really is. They want even the narrative driven single player games to look like Counter-Strike. Flat, without flare, atmosphere, taste, punch, style, cinematography. I was like them just few years ago, but after gave these effects a chance (thanks to DF and Corridor Crew), I can't play games without them (except for CA or film grain - that depends.. sometimes film grain destroys HDR black lever floor and CA can be overdone which can ruin IQ)
@@12xenn45that's wild bro who the f asked tho
Did he say 960p 30 in cinematic wide-screen?
964p but yeah he did
"world's most powerful console" mind you , Xbox always a bloody joke it's getting ridiculous at this point dunno how people can continue to defend it
@@weplayvrgames its the unreal engine...
@@iamthegameproA bad worker always blames his tools.
I'm mainly worried that I won't be able to play the game because typically 30fps makes me feel ill. I might have to wait for a new gen (or until I can afford to build a new pc rig) before buying this one.
first Trailer was clearly Unreal Engine 4 /2019!! - so that could be explain the main differences fidelity wise
This game was revealed in 2019? Sheeshh
3-5 years typical dev time + COVID...not surprised honestly. I'd rather the devs take their time.
@@alb6678 I'm more surprised that it got announced so long ago, not that it is taking a long time to make
They didn't fully start development until mid-2021, so it hasn't really been that long.
@@gavinhillick If that’s the case maybe don’t announce it 2-3 years before development starts? The game has already had 5-6 trailers at this point
@@bigjigyeahUnfortunately, they didn't consult me on when to announce it.
First hellblade has in times stunning visuals. Have they improved their gameplay though? The gameplay wasn't great in first game. The puzzles - stand exactly on this spot to solve it - were frustrating.
There’s a reason people only talk about Hellblade’s graphics. The gameplay was mediocre and that’s being kind.
Curious as to how gears 6 will run since they are targeting 60fps on series x and their ue5 benchmark showed series x averaging 45fps in a lumen and nanite demo at 1080p
UE5 was no where as complete as it is now... & it's still not. But if any team can make sure it's 60fps when it comes out. It's definitely the coalition.
@@mikebrown9051 thats not how it works they already started development back then they are using an old version
@@xtr.7662 But they get the updates as they become available, it's not like they stuck using the old version of a UE5. HellBlade 2 is example of that, because the facial animations are significantly improved from the demo we seen of her fighting the giant. That's because they received the updates and was able to implement those improvements into the game over time. The main thing holding back UE5 now is the upscaling technology is not ready yet. So everyone is still using their own upscale solution or FSR on console which have mixed results.
@@RekathonPrime ue5 uspcaling tsr is pretty great better than fsr2 they are gonna use that
@@xtr.7662 TSR is good but it can be taxing on the hardware at this point. That's why it's not implemented as much as it could be.
I didn't expect near photorealism in games yet, but wow.
We're 3.5 years into this console generation and only now are we getting access to this game that was shown in pre launch console footage 😂
And I bet it won't be all that good.
UE5 was not complete either. It's still not. So it's fine that it's just now coming out.
@@mikebrown9051mfs even announced Ue6 before completing the current engine
@@Johnjrambo75 depends on what you expect. If you liked the first game you'll surely love the sequel. If you expect a game like God of War yo'll be disappointed. I don't think Hellblade is a game with a broad appeal. It's more niche. It get's all the attention for its visuals.
@@apfelschorle1988of course it's not a game like God of War lol because God of War is more like a hack and slash with godlike powers and stuff while Hellblade 2 is more cinematic, story driven, and the combat is more realistic to real humans capabilities 🤦♂️
This is going to be a real test for the PC I just built. Hope my 4070 + Ryzen 7 are up for the challenge.
This feels like a tech demo more than a full-length game. Kinda like Matrix Awakens
Or Stellar Blade 😅
@@josesalgado1870 Not sure if you played the demo of Stellar Blade but it has great gameplay. Not the best visually but gameplay wise its great!
Good work DF.
Hellblade 2 i am very much looking forward too Playing, ashame it's only gonna be 30fps but it's gonna be a quality Game nonetheless.
Digital foundry did a poor job with this "analysis" there was a lot they over looked that they already been called out on
And people call death stranding walking simulator.
P.D: For the record, I played death stranding and I didn't like it.
Hellblade 2, from the little they have shown, apparently seeks to focus more on how it tells its story and its graphics, which is fine.
We'll see how it goes, after all it's a very niche game.
well, yes? the game is about delivering packages primarily by walking... Of course linear games will require the MC to walk towards their goal, but walking is not the main goal in this one. If you feel more comfortable you can call Death Stranding a fedex simulator then, and good for you if you actually enjoy it.
Well that's because it is. This game won't have you walking for 40 hours. Death Stranding will.
Played the first one?
Blurry and dark, it's really hard to make out any details. Most scenes are so dark that I wonder if it's done not to have to render too much at any given point.
It is.
Probably. All developers find ways to cut corners for other aspects. Are you new to video games or something?
Literally every game uses tricks to reduce the render budget but making the game dark doesn’t really reduce the budget the assets still have to be rendered
It's style with technical reasons ..
Stop it looks amazing must be PS fans…😆😎
That framerate is so cinematic
Hoping my 3080Ti can push this at 4K with DLSS
