I am 63 and in good shape, and still wearing good quality slim fit jeans. Remember, when you wash jeans, always turn them inside out to prevent the fade.

Gents must be very carful with jeans. Even trim fit men can run the risk of looking a little out of place wearing them. I’m just 40 and see this all to often. They just don’t seem to convey a good look at a certain point. This is just my opinion of course and we should wear whatever we like as long as it’s tasteful, elegant and comfortable.

I’m still on the jeans, but keeping to the dark blue shades only, as you suggest.

Same here. I look at jeans as a very neutral item that is completely changed by the style of footwear you choose to go with them. Wearing a pair of brogues with jeans is a totally different experience than with trainers.

I only have one pair as I threw out my decade old (even though I seemed to have fit them for that long) and have my dark wash as well. I'll use them for when I want to be very casual but look neat at the same time. I highly recommend Levi 511 Dark Hollow jeans. Perfect color. Perfect mid ground fit that's slim but not too tight or too baggy.

Oh, baby, a triple! (Sorry, dead meme.) Here are my thoughts.
    Monk Straps
I think monk straps are excellent for that "I dress up because I want to, not because I have to" look that many young dandies aspire to. Plain oxfords and derbies, while elegant, are a uniform of corporate culture. Monk straps are a more personal, youthful, dapper take on classic shoes. I currently have two single-straps, one black and one tan. Some spezzatura-ists leave the back buckle undone, and I probably would too, were I to own a double-strap. I think monk straps pair wonderfully with almost any outfit, from a button-up and slacks (or even a polo) to cocktail attire. Skip 'em for funerals, due to the uniqueness, and anything more formal, such as black tie or morning dress. Maybe they could work for a stroller, but I wouldn't risk it. Also, avoid those weird spectator/monk strap frankenshoes.
    Tweed Sport Coat Pairings
For dark grey, I think mid or dark blue chinos are an excellent suggestion. I think light beige, green, and dark brown would work great, too. With a light brown sport coat, I think, as pictured with Mr. Connery, a lighter brown or beige would work great. I prefer a look in which the trousers are lighter than the jacket. Dark blue could work, and green is a good suggestion. I must, however, disagree with Ash in the notion that black shoes could be worn with this outfit. Black shoes are, at minimum, for a dark grey or blue suit (not combination!). You can get away with them with certain patterns, like a houndstooth, but I wouldn't wear them with less than a suit. Wearing black shoes with earth tones would look bizzare to me; a total mis-match! I think Ash's suggestion of oxblood is smart, but I prefer oxblood with other red tones, otherwise it can look unharmonious. If in doubt, go with brown.
    Jeans
I have a gripe with jeans. I think they're some of the worst trousers imaginable. They serve as a "middle-ground" between style and comfort, yet do neither remotely well. If you want to look nice, wear chinos or dress shorts or something. They'll look much nicer and be comfier while doing it. If you want something to work in or relax in, wear sweats, or even pajama pants. You'll be far comfier. Jeans are like sand - they're coarse, rough, and they're everywhere. I think the only thing jeans are good for is when you're doing labor that may damage your clothes, but you need to keep your clothes in good shape and avoid buying new ones, or maybe you need to protect your body from injury better than pajama pants can. If you're a farmer or welder, then jeans are probably great. Don't be like I Did a Thing and blacksmith barefoot and in shorts, unless you're I Did a Thing. Otherwise, there's probably better trousers for you.
    Please excuse my memey-ness today!

I have to agree with 'Dandy about Jeans and monkstraps through I'd like to add to the "Chinos and Shades" topic:
It *Is* perfectly possible to wear say a light grey jacket with a dark grey or even black Chinos *if* there are elements like black buttons or a darker upper collar to balance it out. In the best case of course you'd have dark hair or, a tad bit more intentionally manageable, a dark hat.
Yes ist makes you look like an Oreo but who's to say they don't look tasty?😹
      Best regards

Here's a question: Hair pieces. My hair has been slowly thinning for years but really accelerated in my early 40's. I found a place in East London last year and they matched a hair piece to my natural colour and it has changed my life for the better. My confidence has returned. I look younger, I can wear jeans. For me, it has been a fantastic investment. The system is not without issue. I find I can only tolerate the glue for 4 or 5 days at a time and I have to take it off for a day, but other than that, it's been brilliant. My wife says I should embrace balding and let my hair go. I say never! What say you?

I say embrace the bald look. It's inevitable for most of us chaps, why fight it? Personally I was almost relieved to start balding, I cut my hair very close and never have to worry about a hair style or the wind blowing it around. Going bald just means one less thing to have to worry about.

47 and I still wear jeans a fair bit, but not just any jeans, they have to be a certain type, very dark blue, well fitting (Especially the leg), tapered at the bottom (About 5-1/2 inch at each hem, shows off your nice pair of Brogues), with no distressing or anything fashionable added to them. Heritage brands tend to stick to the classics and cater for those who are 40's - 50's who are more than likely to pair those jeans with a pair of shoes & shirt. They can look like a pair of chinos at first glance. My favorite brands are allsaints, &SONS, Levi, Lee. Apart from jeans that are too young for you, you can go tofar in the other direction to the 'Dad Jeans' zone, they can look equally bad. Come on guys, 40's isn't that old.... Is it?

Jeans over 40? I hope so! I'm 55 and I wear jeans to work 5 days a week, and dress more formally on my days off. As a train driver, I need a fabric that is resistant to tearing or, when it is torn or permanently soiled, won't be too expensive to replace.
Maybe outside the purview of this channel, but it is as possible to maintain a personal style with work clothes as it is with formal and casual ways of dressing!

Ash. Just kept one pair of jeans for working in the yard or on the car. I like you have stuck strictly to Chino's. As for the monk strap shoe haven't had any since I was in high school. I wore a pair of Florsheim monk straps in my senior year. They served me well but was not knocked out about them. And yes I wore nice shoes and button-down shirts in high school did not fall into the hippie trend more or less followed in My Father's Footsteps. But I have been learning ever since about Style. Thanks for your show. Cheers Ron

I love the look of double monks over single monks; I see them as being above a loafer and below a laced dress shoe. Each to their own. As for jeans, I have actually gotten back into them when I became 50 as it is a ladder up from my work style of rather plain pants and short sleeve polo I wear to work. If one is not ready to go business casual. A dark wash jean with no extra decorations, straight fit (not too loose and not too tight), paired with a tie-less dress shirt and brown dress shows. It is maybe more of a American accepted look than British.

I totally understand why you don't wear jeans but the argument you make about them being related to workers is a bit harsh even though you're historically correct. Many garments like tweed sports jackets used to be worn for sporting and shooting activities but hardly anyone wears them to do such activities these days. Functionality of the garments has changed over time. Take punctures on brogue shoes as an example.
To my mind, jeans are far better than chinos as they're more durable and can keep their shape longer, especially on the knee area.

Here in America we view jeans as part of our ethnic regalia. The advertising slogan used to be “The West grew up in Levi’s!” Matter of fact I’m wearing them now. The outdoor outfitters L. L. Bean actually make some with flannel linings for extreme climates, so if you’re living in North Dakota Ash won’t mind if you buy some. He’s a nice guy, and he wouldn’t want his American friends to die of hypothermia. So yes, you can dress like a chap while digging your car out of a snow drift.
The double strap strikes me as faddish and even a bit weird, but the single strap has advantages. You won’t have to retie your laces at embarrassing moments, but they don’t flop around the way loafers do. And they can add a bit of pizzazz to a suit. Astute readers of the Fleming books will note that Bond “detested lace-up shoes” and usually wore “moccasins” instead. God knows why, because if you’re giving someone a karate kick in the throat the “moccasin” might fly off your foot and leave you vulnerable. If Fleming had thought of it the single strap loafer might have provided Bond with the perfect solution.

I like my two pairs of double monkstraps.
I will admit with full honesty that I like them especially because these are a proper shoe that saves me a little time in the morning when I have very little time 😅.
Weiredly I fell single monkstraps feel more casual to me, no ratio behind thus just that they are "less busy" ... kind of ilegitimate given that I just stated the simplicity of the monkstraps as tue reasoning behind me liking them... 😹
Jeans... hm I haven't worn any since the age of 25, but that's because of medical conditions and it had soured jeans for me quite substantial Ane na nije na style don't have a place for them anyway, I much prefer Chinos for the less formal dress but mostly dress pants in suite or combinations.

@@jonstern7511 I'm fairly fixed regarding the holes, but truth be told it's chiefly a "Raoul-specific" thing: the less I need to bow down my head at or past ~45° the less Iikely I am to induce a substantially painfull piercing ~10 Minutes of headache from my damaged skull.
The "pull-snap, pull-snap" of the monkstraps beats the disoriented morning "pull-pull-knot-knot-knot-knot-grumble-untie-repeat" of the certainly more dapper laces😆.

Hi Ash -- quick question. I'd like to purchase a G9 Harrington Jacket from Baracuta, but i am stuck on the colour. I'd like to go perhaps a more red colour such as Tawny Port. But they do not have any currently in stock. Racing Green is the next best option I think. In general, how do you choose your colours? For separates, I have found myself leaning towards lighter colour trousers (Khaki, light grey etc) and darker tops like my navy blue sports jacket. All the best, Ken

Great choice - I will answer this rather more fully in a future Q & A video I'm planning, but I tend to choose colours that compliment my current wardrobe and offer contrast to what I already own. Bold colours are great, as long as you have lots of neutrals to wear in the final ensemble. Khaki and navy are solid favourites for daily use, but the green is a very tempting option - choose well sir!

What a great choice for the winter season. I have always admired the Tiger Moth boot for it's heritage aesthetic appearance, but I have been concerned how I could carry off the military-look boot in daily use. It is quite a dominant piece of footwear and will certainly stand out in any crowd. You have chosen very well indeed sir and I have no doubt they will last many decades with care and attention. I have never owned any footwear constructed of Kurdu leather, so I can only assume they will age as well as standard leather, but I suspect they ill actually become quite soft and pliable as time passes and the boot forms to your foot. Let me know how you get along with them!!
