  • Phil Mickelson made a huge impact on the opening day of The 145th Open at Royal Troon in 2013.
The 2013 Champion wasted little time in starting his challenge for the Claret Jug by playing one of the finest first rounds that The Open has ever seen.
It was hard to deny that the American was playing at his peak as he chased down a record-breaking round score.
This spectacular display sowed the seeds for the epic final-round showdown between Phil Mickelson and Henrik Stenson.
This is every televised shot of Phil Mickelson on day one of the 145th Open.

Is this the best ever opening round at The Open? If it isn't, what is?

Media always used to say he’d never win a British Open… he’s pretty good at making them look foolish

The putt on #18 convinced me that there actually are supernatural spirits that actively prevent a man from shooting 62 in a major championship.
Of course, Branden Grace promptly dispelled that (or simply vanquished them) the very next year.
Wish Phil could've been the first to do it, but oh well. Still a fantastic tournament for him, at age 46 to boot!

I'd like to say something silly as well:
12:26 sounds uncannily similar to the sound effect for a long putt going in in Wii Sports.
