Flying low and close in for the camera on a very windy day with an Adrian Page 1/5th scale Gee Bee R2. During a low slow knife edge, a wind gust caused it to do a 5/8 snap without enough altitude to recover and pull out. I think another 10 feet or so and I could have made it. It is a great flying Bee Gee plane and the crash was the result of flying too low and slow on a very windy day. The BeeGee is being rebuilt and will fly again. Powered by an OS .91fs turning an APC 14x6 prop. Takeoff weight is around 7.75 lbs.
A good R\C pilot there. Nice job of filming too. Looked like an unfortunate case of pilot error. It happens. My Gee Bee R2 was designed to fly very slowly and had wing washout so it would not drop a wing and stall even at extremely low airspeeds.
Adrian
I just got a UMX Gee Bee and trying to work my nerves up to flying it. I had friend fly it for me and said "it's a plane that's designed to be flown fast and level at all times". Anyway good flying on your part and fantastic plane!!
I love the super slow motion!
I just got the E-flight UMX geeBee R2! I almost got through the maiden, (3 min+) but I started thinking about giving the elevator trim a couple of down clicks as it was climbing too much on acceleration. I took my eyes off it to look at the TX for a second and crashed, I managed to cut the throttle in time. so the damage was not bad, it took me less the 5 min to fix, and I'm ready to give it another try soon. I'm new, and probably shouldn't have started with a GeeBee but love how they look!
oh no.. sorry to see that.. looked like pilot error.. looks like you exited the knife edge in the wrong direction.. pulling out inverted that low was a mistake...it sure was doing its thing there for a while though.. hope its repairable.. im glad it didnt go in the toilet!!!
These are beautiful kits. Twitchy plane.
Aileron reversal is an aeroelastic problem which occurs at a certain dynamic pressure when the moment caused by the aileron deflection twists the wing to a point that lift doesnt vary, or varies in the opposite sence one would expect. It wouldn't occur at that speed, and if the wing was so flexible, it should have happened before. I thik it was just a stall on the left wing. Apparently the right wing was still providing some lift and that's why it rolled violently.
I'm sorry about the model :(
I believe that is an Adrian Page Gee Bee. It is a very well designed, lightweight kit.
Dude! You stalled it
Well, All you can do is look at the bright side,"you have a great video of it flying well, and even captured it's demise"! If you see this comment (2 years later) us know if you ever repaired it?
Ouch! At least you got the wheels under it!
Why is it that the words Gee Bee and crash almost always seem to go together?
Just too AWESOME! Carry on.
ImO, Pilot error.. Going way to slow with a GeeBee, stalled....
"Aileron reversal" due to the attitude and lack of airflow. If you look, full right ail was being used, but this actually creates a highly undercambered wing section, resulting in that wing with the "down" aileron stalling. The real one does the same thing, ask Delmar!
Pilot error.
What brand Gee Bee was that, China model? It didn't look like a Great Planes. Looked like a Saito in it. Seemed like it had plenty of power.
And, was it repairable or replaced?
Adrian Page design, balsa built-up model, design has good flying record.
My friend, I am allowed to laugh...I crashed 3 of the EMS 1.8 meter ones til I got one going properly...a heli gyro on the rudder solved all the low speed/high speed stalling problems :-) Problem is the big round fuselage in any side slip situation, blanking out the airflow over the retarding wing...very nice flying though mate!!! :-)
Its a Gee Bee.... not an Extra man...
Mine did the same thing when i stalled....damn ......memories!
i just bought one yesterday and flew it this morning it flies great
That was a shame that was a cool looking model
lol that sucks that you crashed it but up until that part you were flying really good
The GeeBeeR2 is a speedster not a 3d stuntplane .You obviously had no respect for the envelope and the aircraft paid the price .
Thats what flight is all about...
this is at tom sayer!!
looks fixible....maybe...not
well you allmost pulled it out of that stall
its unfortunate, but the word crash usually follows gee bee!!
Always good to be reminded of the reasons I went electric.
Yeah, flying foamies its basically airplanes with training wheels.
You'll get there, you can do it!
For me it was the sound. ...I feel so calm and relaxed with electric motors.
But maybe a gasoline engine in my Seagull GeeBee Z....or the Kyosho GeeBee Z. ?..But glow plug motors are a messy nightmare.
😭
No wonder the real plane was called a flying coffin..
Mima como vas colegui
