  • Nebraska started playing football in 1890. We've been told through the decades since that the team was called by several nicknames, including - Old Gold Knights, Antelopes, Tree Planters, Rattlesnake Boys, and Bugeaters before they settled on Cornhuskers.
Is that true? We they really called all these nicknames?
No, not really. In this video I examine the history of Nebraska's nicknames.

"Man Killing Mastodons" sounds the most bad ass. I enjoyed watching this history lesson. Good job, Jon!

A proud heritage swamped into obscurity in the so-called Big 10. I'm no bugeater, but I remember with fondness those dominating teams of the 70's.

I think there was a couple of missed opportunities as far as nicknames sounding cool. You mentioned "Bug eaters as being a bird that ate bugs, called a Night Hawk. To 21st Century ears Night Hawk has a cool ring to it. It may have been passed over because I have heard of night hawks being another name for nightmares, but you can put a spin on that as well ;) Man Killing Mastodons will do just fine ;)

I often tell folks if you see a tree in Nebraska, it's by a river a lake or somebody lives there and for a lot off years that was pretty much true. Corn husking used to be a competitive event at fairs and such.

It’s so funny that Nebraska wanted to change its colors to be more unique and then chose red and white seemingly the most common color arrangement in the country for major colleges

Well done Sir. Surprised more people didn’t know the “Man Killing Mastodons “ since there’s a statue on campus. There was also a Local band that adopted the name around 8-12 years ago.

I saw your page of Man Killing Mastodon designs. I didn't know where to vote so I'm putting my vote here. I really liked the one with the mascot., so that's my #1. #2 would be the "logo" one. I thought they were all great though. I wish we had an animal mascot instead of what we have now! Thanks for your great content!

Mr Johnson. Outstanding video on the history of our beloved Cornhuskers nicknames. Absolutely mastodons is more appealing than mammoths. I an still a bit more favorable to The Rattlesnake Boys. A painful strike that disables if not kills!

‘Hoosiers,’ if I remember correctly, was a term applied to the former indentured servants who moved northward, seeking new land in the Northwest Territory, after completing their 7- or 10-year service in the southern states. The term initially comes from the English settlers in the southern states who (mostly) came from southwestern England. It was a disparaging term for (I believe) the lowland Scots & Scots-Irish.

I grew up in Indiana, and never heard that before. The story that I remember best is that it came from the dialect the pioneers had. When someone knocked on their door the Hoosier would call out "who's aire?"

For this offseason my plan is to stay around the 1890-1928 range so I don't have to deal with copyright as much and I can figure out how I'm going to work with historical societies, etc.
Plus everyone's dead and I won't have to argue with them. Ha!
