The Community Rule Like the Rule of the Monks, the Regula Coenobialis was drawn up for one of Columban’s monastic communities, possibly a different one from that which received the previous Rule. Walker takes chapters I to IX of this Rule to contain the nucleus which goes back to Columban himself; he would regard the later chapters of the shorter recension and the extra interpolations of the longer recension as having been added by Columban’s successors in Luxeuil. These show some relaxation of the stricter prescriptions found in the earlier part. This Rule provides a more detailed commentary on the daily life of an early Irish monk than any other source. Yet even here a lack of systematisation is obvious, and the Regula Coenobialis would seem to have grown out of a collection of practical decisions given in the case of the breaches of discipline rather than being a conscious effort to draw up systematic regulations to order the whole life of the monastery. As a sample of the Regula Coenobialis, chapters III-V, which deal with the omission of prayers, disrespect for sacred things and abuses of speech, are included here: The monk who does not prostrate himself to ask a prayer when leaving the house, and after receiving a blessing does not bless himself, and go to the cross - it is prescribed to correct him with twelve blows. Likewise the one who shall forget the prayer before work or after work - with twelve blows. He who on his return home does not prostrate himself within the house to ask a prayer, is to be corrected with twelve blows. But the brother who confesses all these things and more, even as much as to deserve a grace penance, gets off with half penance, that is, a medium penance; and so on with these matters. Mitigate them thus for the moment. The monk who through coughing goes wrong in the chant at the beginning of a psalm - it is laid down to correct him with six blows. Likewise the one who bites the cup of salvation with his teeth - with six blows. The one who does not follow the order for the sacrifice - with six blows. The one who smiles at the synaxis, that is, at the office of prayers - with six blows; if he bursts out laughing aloud - with a grave penance unless it happens excusably. The one who receives the blessed bread with unclean hands - with twelve blows. He who forgets to make the oblation until he goes to Mass - with a hundred blows. The monk who tells idle tales to another, if he censures himself at once - with a mere pardon, but if he does not censure himself - with an imposition in silence or fifty blows. He who defends himself truthfully, when questioned about something, and does not at once beg pardon and say `It’s my fault, I’m sorry’ - with fifty blows. He who in all honesty sets counsel against counsel - with fifty blows. He who strikes the altar - with fifty blows. He who shouts loud talk without restraint, unless there is need - with an imposition of silence or fifty blows. He who makes an excuse in order to get pardon must do a like penance. He who replies to a brother on his pointing something out ‘It’s not as you say,’ except for seniors speaking frankly to juniors - with an imposition of silence or fifty blows.

The biggest problem with how medieval Europe came about was the concept that 5he Roman Catholic Church was the heir to the. Roman Empire In this it alleged the brotherhood of humans while retaining all authority over “ Client Kings” .and through that, the entire populace. This played out in the notion that the pope was infallible, and was above all politics when no such thing existed. While the dimming of the sun event of 535 and the famine after 542, 5he closed mindedness expressed by the Church manifested in 5he teaching of only a religious nature. All educated references such as ancient books were restricted t9 the ver6 few and there started the list of banned books. What the populace was taught came through the religious filter and any ancient references to a non religious view was punished under the vague condemnation of heresy. It was the independent creative thinkers that were accused the most while with some their creativity was circumscribed by religious commissions. And yet those that would be considered as part of a Cabal, were able to still have independent thought and education from wherever it could be found and in. Many cases portrayed through art based on figures of antiquity and through that, circumvent the restrictions placed on them.

Uncontrolled diversity destroys harmony. Harmony is essentially a carefully selected variety that aims to create a pleasing outcome. Uncontrolled diversity in its natural process either completely collapses or if nurtured correctly may grow into a beautiful harmonious culture . The opposite is usually the case though.

Being forgiven every day is a New Testament teaching. In the Lord's prayer we pray: Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. In John's first letter he writes: 'If we confess our sins, God will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.' It doesn't therefore originate with Columbanus, but the Bible!

Not in any significant way

Great subject marred by this globohomo narration. An anti Catholic agitator trying to conflate an Irish Catholic hero with her squalid so called progressive ideas. He would have fought against her.
ABSOLUTELY!
In spite of the obviously propagandistic appeal to ‘unity’ the world’s idealistic dreamers, however dissonant with reality, are precious assets deserving tolerance and worth preserving. The potential value of the “Crazy Eddies” of the world is pervasively under appreciated!
I'm really interested in this story of documentary which I watched to the end. Excellent work and deamination of Colombanos

The whole point of the saints life was to help people know love & serve God. Thev type of world unity he envisioned was unity of Faith within the mystical body of Christ. Completely overlooked by the doco.

I know it's everywhere isn't it and insidious as fuq
Also the Roman tradition of public penance and sins only being forgiven once had been thrown out a century BEFORE Columbanus by pope Leo I ....
And actually the forgiveness of sins only once only applied to certain sins, and that had been tossed out in the 300s. Ugh

A bit too much projection of the modern into the past and suggesting his ideas spawned the EU was priceless and tenuous. Not something most of us would find laudatory!

The biggest problem with how medieval Europe came about was the concept that 5he Roman Catholic Church was the heir to the. Roman Empire
In this it alleged the brotherhood of humans while retaining all authority over “ Client Kings” .and through that, the entire populace.
Fascinating story, used as a poor didactic.

The church in Bangor looks like it’s Church of Ireland (Anglican).
Where is Columbarnus going to come from? I hope Jesus comes because it is not just Europe that seems to be in trouble but it is the entire world it seems.
The show repeatedly questions why people would dedicate their lives to God...well just perhaps God is real & can inspire such dedication

Let's have harmony and diversity. Everything is possible if we work together. Thank you Columbanus!

President Mary McAleese!
Wonderful documentary. Tahnks.
No, I mean what I wrote.
Neldidellavittoria You must be a chick. The spouting narrator to this piece looks and sounds like a feminist.

I'm kinda torn on this one.. I enjoy the Time line documentaries, but in a very strong way, this one reminds me of the movie Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. "Civilized People" coming in to save a savage and failing society get the "F" out of here with that... History has taught us, the most "Civilized People" often do the most atrocious thing's.

you are a very materialistic person trying to understand a spiritual master and him emanations
the early Christian monks were smart enough to use the ancient spots of energy that the Pagans had and the pagans got those spots from even more ancient peoples
I disagree Lisa, and if they did it was a pagan overhang that many escaped through a more biblically minded Christianity as shown in my new (independent!) documentary and book about Columbanus : ua-cam.com/video/cQxFcTh5uyg/v-deo.html

ALL PRAISE TO YAHAWAH IN THE NAME OF YAHAWASHI for WORTHY is the LAMB to be PRAISED!!!!!!!!
FEAR YAH AND KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS for this is the duty of man. BOOK of ECCLESIASTES.
Although the Biblical scriptures of ancient Hebrew says this, Christianity is against it as "they" celebrate pagan Hellodays and accept homosexuality which is said to be abominable before the eyes of The MOST HIGH YAH and against HIS Commandments.
Just as the people of Sodom and Gomorah and Pompeii those who go against THE MOST HIGH YAH always pay for it.
