  • This is one of four built over the years. Some of my BEST sailing adventures where on boats like this sailing from Astoria to Hood river. Decked over and sealed between deck and hull makes for a craft that can take on heavy weather with very little water on board. Flotation bow and stern make the craft float if filled. But that never came close to reality. GOOD SAILING

What a work of art!!! I absolutely love it! I just bought a 17ft Grumman and am sail rigging it. There's a lot to be inspired by with your design!

Well done. Grummans, or any superior quality aluminum canoe work the best for this type of conversion because you can drill and fasten bolts and other fixtures and won't compromise strength one bit. I've made sailing trimarans from Grummans for years. if you can, at some point, try to get a Grumman 18. Lower stems and a longer waterline really increase your load baering and speed. The 18 was Grumman's version of a tripping canoe, and thel ower ends is not affected by the wind as much which helps while tacking. They also have a longer entry and departure section lines, so less full and bulky. Better slicing.

A lovely outrigger canoe. I have setup a similar canoe but with a sailboard mast and sail (stayed) and a paddle for steering (on a lanyard). These two things make it quite easy to shunt (back and forward) to keep the small hull upwind. Now halfway through my 60s I need to make it easy.

May I ask, is the flotation on that outrigger a length of PVC pipe? Thanks for sharing.

I've added a sail to my 17' Grumman. I have a 10' mast with a 5'x8' tarp as the sail sprit rigged. It's fun to sail.
I'm now joining 2 canoes together to make a catamaran & installing a sail on it. I'm planning on a 10'x13' sprit sail on this.
What is the height of your mast?
