Hello! I'm excited about helping you to start selling your handmade books. This is a pretty basic overview of my recommendations on starting a bookbinding business. There are relatively few bookbinders selling their work, and I think it's because bookbinding is generally difficult to profit from until your skills reach an advanced level and demand grows for your books. We are a creative bunch of people - I believe we can figure out how to support each other to make it work.
I know there's so much more to cover, so leave your questions in the comments and I'll try to answer them in future videos. I'm definitely not in a position to consult or offer business advice!

I started selling my handmade books last year after I discovered your channel. And have both options of commissions and ready-made books. It's true commissions do bring in more profit and I can set the schedule and deadline for myself as well.
It had been a great experience so far.

Bookbinder here. Good advice and well presented: simple, well said and to the point! Wish someone told me many of those when I began.
    I'd also add 2 more:
    A) Don't be afraid to price your work higher. Most people, especially early on, underprice their work and that can lead to frustration and disappointment and stall your growth.
    B) Don't be afraid to say "No" - assuming you take commissions. It's easy to fall into the trap of accepting whatever work comes your way at the beginning due to enthusiasm/anxiety, a practice that can lead to many problems. As soon as you start receiving more than a few requests, choose only the ones that bring you closer to your goals, whichever those may be, or else you'll be moving in all directions and end up not going anywhere!

Thank you, Chanel! I got into bookbinding and am seriously looking at starting a business with it and all of your points resonated with me. I'm going into it with my husband so your point about having other things ALONG WITH books hit hard since he's a phenomenal artist (I'm aware of my bias there!) and we can make very interesting things together.

Yes! Combine them! I make books and journals from my watercolors and acrylics on watercolor paper, and they make unique one of a kind pieces. I don't actively sell them, but I have sold quite a few just from people asking me if I would sell to them when they see my things online. I do it for the joy of it, but it's flattering when people actually want to pay me for something I made with my own two hands.

I love your videos and content! I used to sell my handmade books on Etsy and one year made 30k (they were mostly wedding guestbooks). I think just teaching people how to make books without the intent to make it a business is valuable enough. Like you said, its a hard thing to profit off of.

Damn it’s “easy” in the US!
Can’t just start up a commercial bindery where I live, it’s still a recognised craft where you must apprentice with a master bookbinder and gain your official title of journeyman (test includes the traditional journeyman’s piece) after which you can work in binderies run by master binders.
Eventually you can apply to become a master bookbinder yourself after which (provided you have been successfully tested including making the proverbial masterpiece) you are allowed to run your own bindery.
It’s comparably prohibitive, I guess, but I reckon in return it does ensure a solid minimum standard of quality, skill, and knowledge throughout the profession.
Thank you very much for sharing your journey! It’s always fascinating to see how things work in different countries!
