Ну 5.0 это какой такой идиот из судей поставил, она прекрасно откатала- иногда хочется кричать судей на мыло
Какая она здесь красивая, изящная, тонкая, очень музыкальная. И какой же совестью нужно обладать, чтобы за эту красоту ставить 5.0.

How Sarah Hughes’s problem-filled program was ahead of this performance is always beyond me.

She was so severely underscored even though she was the only one -out of the top 5- who performed a triple lutz on an outside edge. Slutskaya, Cohen, Hughes all flutzed. I hated her dress here, though.
Maria Butyrskaya is very charismatic, I wish there were more videos of her and in HD.

Indeed, she lacked ease, and her 2 triples were a bit jerky. As always looked nervous. But overall, this program should have at least been 4th. I think after finishing 3rd at 2000 Worlds, 4th at 2001 Worlds, and not really doing well during her GP Finals, the judges were just tired of expecting from her and her not delivering. However, I was a big fan of hers. She deserved all the love her fans showed for her.

Scott & Sandra's critique of her program was actually very professional analysis. They were very fair in their analysis. It was a well constructed program, but it was not skated with ease. Very slow & very tepid. Her marks were fair

This program makes me emotional, it's sad because you can see the age difference between young skaters and old skaters. She is a true rebel and veteran
Scores or not, she ALWAYS rocked it! She was awesome to watch, every year. I loved that she stayed in the sport longer than most. Totally entertaining and she brought a kind of sex appeal to her presentation that made it so fun to watch. She was a gem to the sport.

у Маши всегда постановки отличались от своих же предыдущих! И на это всегда было приятно смотреть! Посмотрите на Кван..... даже рисунок программы практически никогда не менялся! по сути она меняла только музыку!

My thought, exactly! I am so tired of Scotty as a commentator. He needs to go to commentator school or get slapped by Dick Button. :) Dick used to drive me crazy, but after reading our criticisms in the old figure skating mail list (how forums used to be), or so we heard, he cleaned up his act. Scott just never learned, nor cared to.

I kind of wish Medvedeva would have gone back to this music for her 2018 Olympics short program
That was when we did not realize yet how much Russia will change.
This was Butyrskaya's weakest short program by a mile (little speed, spirals were poor, layback to end was poor). I wish she would have come up with something much different for her final season, and I wish she would show a little more happy emotion at the end of her clean skate. She's kinda just like 'eh whatever' at the end here.
It's not worth it to even imagine what could have been if IJS was in place, but I'd guess Hughes would be behind Butyrskaya, Sebestyen, Suguri, and even Meier.
She should have been placed in 3° ... With Slutskaya in 1° and sahsa in 2° place
Nice jumps and spins, but the spiral sequence and footwork sequence were weak compared to what she accomplished in her short programs in previous seasons (e.g., 2000). Also, Maria's short programs usually were great to watch in terms of artistry, but this short program's choice of music and choreography didn't really do it for me.
Absolutely underscored
I don't think she could have chosen a more unflattering look for herself. The costume is so ugly it's distracting, and I'm not a fan of beige skates. I think she had the burden to come up with something different for she was criticized for reusing programs for multiple seasons. I also think the success Scene D'Amour made her compelled to choose another soft piece of music. I loved her sexy, sultry short programs. Her 98 season short program despite it's inconsistency is still my favorite.
Best figure skater ever!!!! She should have won a medal here.... Corupted judges.
@JESSE NELSON just being honest. Non of your favourites I'm sure didn't skate at all the age of 30, not to mention being the current European champion in 2002 and best skater at the Olympics.

Her speed & flow across the ice are stellar. This was refined, elegant & mature skating. Much better than Hughes whose skating lacked refinement. They are seriously trashing her. This woman is 30 + years old making history with this fine performance. Instead of embracing this it is condemned. Skating is a crap sport.

I miss Maria too, she was so graceful - my favourite figure skater of this era. It should have given her 3rd place in short, judges undermarked her for some only known to them reason - surely some bias, I don't understand how biased are those stupid American commentators are either - it is disgusting.

jan tellit I agree. This was very elegant. I don't necessarily disagree with the placements for the short programs or the scores, but his "nothing was truly special" comment was completely uncalled for and kind of a jack-ass thing to say for an Olympics commentator.

I'd have put this 3rd behind Sluts and Cohen. Kwan underrotated the flip and Hughes' could only do a flutz. I think the points system we have today would have thrown up a different result here.
WOW, after all the pairs' scandal and discussion, the 'block' was still alive and well. And no one said anything!!!! So these kids suffered in silence like so many others over the years. All the other judges were in line, but the Russian, Dane, and Belorussian judges were way out. No way this performance merited a 5.7 technical, but it sure wasn't 5.0, either! I think 5.4 was about right, from my armchair. That being said, according to Scott, "nothing was truly special" (this wasn't her best, but she was special, in her day!). Scott, you got on my last nerve! Ego had taken over and turned him into a cruel jerk. Plus he was never a good commentator, anyway.
Is it just me or is Scott just rude and biased when he talks about the skaters in the later yrs of his commentary?

5.4/5.7. I love Maria but this was technically a relatively weak program. Not a great landing on the flip, poor-quality spiral sequence and layback, slower and less assured than she usually is.
А у Кван , конечно, было все “идеально”..super-tiny jumps . Но на первое место почему-то накатала.

I was rooting for her! But this short program didn't feel like a Butyrskaya program. It lacked her normal zazazoo.
Мария Бутырская должна была бороться за 1 место на этой Олимпиаде вместе с Сарой Хьюз. Кто из них лучше - дело вкуса. У Сары сильнее показана прыжковая часть, у Марии - всё остальное. Мне всегда было ближе катание Маши Бутырской. Но в США 1 место в любом случае дали бы американской спортсменке. М. Бутырская вряд ли бы подавала протест из-за 2 места и устраивала скандал. Так что судьям надо быть более разборчивыми в выборе призеров ОИ. Им должно быть стыдно за свою продажность и за свои оценки.
Здесь какие-то иные игры, мне непонятные. В 1980 году на ОИ тоже в Америке (!) тем не менее лишили золота Линду Фратианни, хотя откатала ПП она тогда прекрасно и её победа не вызвала бы вопросов. Но за артистизм ей поставили две оценки 5.6 и ей в итоге не хватило баллов совсем немного для 1-го места. А тут Хьюз явно вытянули. Мне всё это странно.
@@user-zk5jq2qr9j чтобы понять ОИ-80, надо знать, кто поставил 5.6, может быть судья из ГДР. Тогда всё понятно. То, что вытянули на 1 место Хьюз, это тоже объяснимо. Если бы можно было поставить на 1 место Кван, то США бы вытянули Кван. Но Кван свой шанс упустила, тогда стали тянуть Хьюз. А в США тоже среди спортсменов есть "свои" и "чужие". Джонни Вейру оценки занижали: на ОИ-2010, а Лайсачеку нечестно дали 1 место. Т.е. США за Лайсачека поборолись, а Вейра сдали.
@@svetglushhenko , ну вот, пожалуй, это верная мысль. Не каждый американский спортсмен там ... "свой". За Фратианни бороться не стали, а Хьюз вытащили, хотя Хьюз как спортсменка Линде Фратианни в подмётки не годится. Та была двукратной чемпионкой мира и стабильно показывала высокие результаты, а Хьюз за всё время в спорте один-единственный раз показала отличное катание - ПП на ОИ. И тут же получила золото )) Просто "очевидное-невероятное".
@@user-zk5jq2qr9j если вспомнить ОИ разных лет, которые проводились в США (и летом, и зимой), то на них во многих видах спорта получали медали американские спортсмены менее именитые, чем Хьюз. И с более худшим выступлением. Так что Хьюз ещё не самый худший пример. Помню как на американской Олимпиаде один гимнаст возмущался, когда ему вручили серебро. А он ждал золота. Ни до, ни после не имел никаких медалей, показал средний уровень. Соперники - более именитые гимнасты не ошиблись. Но судьи протащили его, как американца, на 2 место. А он в ответ обиделся, хотел золота. Хотя до чемпиона ему, как до Луны. У них психология (или наглость) такая.

I've always thought she was clutzy in some of her movements, especially when she lands a jump. Then there are her hands and fingers which often resemble claws the way she moves them.

Due to the prejudging - she felt it was her only way of trying to gain an extra placement. It's incomprehensible that this poor woman was not placed ahead of Sarah Hughes.
Jerky, uneasy, nervous, whatever, she was a talent...obviously. Undermarked and the commentating overly critical.
Sorry but Butyrskaya can't be placed at third. Kwan should. And Hughes shouldn't be placed at 9th. Therefore, your ranking makes no sense.
To me this should've scored first.. I'm sorry.. This program is truly unique..truly special..and tells a story of depth.. Scott Hamilton absolutely is the worse commentator.. Fyi.. What was so special about his Olympic overly flawed program btw..

Matt G. Kwan hadn't skated then. The two judges put her ahead of Cohen (questionable) and Hughes (fair and square)
Kwan had flutz and very obvious underrotation on flip, so 2 mistakes out of 3 jumps elements. What so funny to consider Butyrskaya should be ahead?
