    • @Dark0blivion
      @Dark0blivion 2 роки тому +2

      Olympic medals aren't achievement awards. You can be the fasted runner on the planet for four years, but that doesn't earn you a medal. You need to perform on the day. At the end of the day, they didn't do that here.

      The gold medal was earned and it was a disgrace what was done later gaslighting that French judge. Everything is visible to anyone who has eyes and knows skating still. Y’all buy hammy smiles and an easy program but judges need to try to do their job (and scoring still Isn’t neutral and we all know it)
      “Tight” or not the scoring is to the standards and if anything they should’ve won by a bigger margin (esp from the short wtf maybe they’d be in bronze re the Chinese pair I guess it doesn’t matter we promote “western” sports not communists that is what this is about innit?

    Under the new scoring system there wouldn’t even be a dispute: Elena and Anton would be the Olympic champions without any doubt. Their technical content, their transitions and their presentation were so much superior to Jamie and David’s that nobody would raise an eyebrow at their victory. But back then the Canadians, and especially Jamie, were such drama queens that they couldn’t possibly accept a clean but frankly mediocre performance, however much the audience may have supported them, wasn’t good enough for the gold. The only good thing that came out of that debacle was the new scoring system, which now is far more objective and visible.

      You cannot apply the modern scoring system to that long program and award the gold medal. This skate was not worthy of the gold medal. The Canadian program was designed to take advantage of the scoring system that existed when it was put in place. And it rightfully earned them the title of Olympic Champions. Only the corrupt judges consider the Russian pair as champions.

      🙄 No Judging Scandal. Just North America crying Sour Grapes. Since the 6.0 pt system had been eliminated -- due to THIS Olympics, Elena & Anton's Program wouldve completely overruled Jamie's & David's simple program. Im sure Scott Hamilton & the US Commentators had a HUGE influence in Moving the Bias to Canada so they would give out 2 Gold Medals. Ironically, now all FS programs as we know are Chalk full of Athletic Elements, instead of Artistry anymore -- after the Judging Score system switch. Shame that this completely happened -- its all over the comments, and you all in Liberal Team USA blame/Block Lifelong but Objective FS Fans like ME who Call you Cheaters out on Purpose.

And this pair was just so superior to any other pair in Salt Lake. All the connecting moves, the speed, the flow of the blade. Not to mention the difficulty of the program was light years ahead of anything else that night. The fact that two golds were awarded was really a travesty and a disservice to the sport.

      Why would they have won under the new system? Negative GOE for the double axels and negative GOE for that throw double twist where Elena came down hard. Oh and that harp noise they added throughout the this selection of Meditation was terrible. Sale/Pelletier had no mistakes in their program and the difficulty was exactly the same. Their program actually told a story and was wonderful.

    • @cantarechoir352
      @cantarechoir352 7 років тому +31

      Their difficulty in and out of each and every element was not the same, it was markedly easier. Their speed over the ice is not comparable, nor is their depth of edge. These are aspects that would not go unnoticed under the new system.

    • @mattcastg5170
      @mattcastg5170 7 років тому +9

      Cantare Choir saying the Canadian program is "markedly easier" is a bit over the top, I think the announcers are a lot closer too it with the Russian program being "SLIGHTLY more difficult" because of the "seamless transitions" into and out of the elements. Transitions are just one component of the presentation score, there's a lot more to a presentation score (or modern day program component score), let alone to a total program score.
      This program definitely has some beautiful moments and showcases nice skating with several periods of interesting choreography but it's lacking in several other areas. First and foremost is the most obvious flaw, that stumble on the double axel which would of led to a very definite negative grade of execution under the new system (whereas all the technical elements in the Canadian program would of almost certainly received positive GOE's, +2s and +3s for many of the elements). While the Russians throws were technically clean, they also weren't the best they could do (as is mentioned in the commentary, they'd been performing them better at practice throughout the week). I'm not saying they necessarily would of gotten negative GOE marks on the 2 throw elements, but I do think the Canadians would of easily gotten higher GOE scores for their throws over the Russians. On one of the throws in particular with the Russians was noticeably tight. While you mention the Russians speed, this performance was not performed at their usual speed, as mentioned by the commentators in the video.
      My personal main problem with this program however is that it just isn't all that entertaining, engaging or inspiring. Simply put, it bores me. The opposite is true of the Canadian program, which quickly pulls the audience in and keeps it engaged until the music ends. The Canadian program has personality, while this Russian program does not. There's more "performance" going on in the Canadian program and very little going into the Russian program. Some of this may come down to taste, but only to a certain extent in my opinion.
      Finally, when arguing over whether the Russian pair or Canadian pair would of come out on top under the new system, it might be relevant to remember that that the ISU's new system came into being as a direct result of the original outcome of this event! One could argue that the new judging system surely wouldn't end up giving first place to the very program whose initial victory on the night of the competition led to the discrediting of the old 6.0 "ordinal" system. Obviously that argument would be a big over simplification, but it does highlight that the initial results having the Russian pair win were so controversial and caused such an uproar that it led to close scrutiny of figure skating judging for the first time in quite some time. And we all know where that close scrutiny led us.. to the revelation of judges trading votes with judges from other nations. In other words, sketchy judging, something the vast majority of people watching this event in 2002 felt was evident from the moment the final judges placements were announced.

    • @SaraNightfire1
      @SaraNightfire1 7 років тому +2

      Agreed about the program... A long time ago Michelle Kwan killed the competition. She was a great skater, maybe even fantastic, but the biggest reason she won was because she really knew how to get the crowd engaged. She had one of the most expressive faces I've ever seen in skating. (Granted, I don't watch it much but she always knew what expression to have to make the most of the moment.)

    • @keithvnumber1
      @keithvnumber1 7 років тому +23

      The canadians skated like most canadian pairs do. Lots of technical tricks to cover up the lack of artistic value. Jaimies face was mostly stone cold and davids was kinda who the hell knows where he was mentally. This program was superior from start to finish despite the flaws. If you want to argue flaws vs perfection then by that standard Natalia & Artur should have been awarded a co-gold medal in 94 even more so than anyone feels jamie/david did on the simple fact that Artur/Natalia's program was perfection from start to finish, absolute perfection and their program was saturated with passion and excitement as opposed to Sergei/Elena and their very flawed and graceful program. Then also Nancy Kerrigan should've won or gotten co-gold in 94 as well because even without her doubled triple flip her program was superior to oksana's. She was graceful & beautiful and each triple she did do was perfection especially the triple lutz at the end while oksana was dumpy, boring, simple choreography & had so many flaws.

    I just finished reading *The Second Mark*, which told the entire story of the 2002 judging in great detail, and it was fascinating to go back and watch this now. There's no doubt that there were illegal things going on with the judging. There were way too many pieces of evidence in that direction (especially the FBI wiretaps on the Russian gangster where he told people he was fixing the 2002 Olympics results so that the Russian pair would win no matter what.)
    But the most interesting part in watching the two pairs back to back now is that I really think a good argument could be made that Elena and Anton deserved to win anyway. There were a couple of technical bobbles, but there was no comparison in grace and artistry with Sale and Pelletier. The Russians were far above. The irony is that the judging undoubtedly was fixed (as would have been proven is the case had ever gone further) and yet didn't really need to be.

    • @Vestula
      @Vestula 8 років тому +35

      @pueraeternus111 7 років тому +16

    • @imotogin
      @imotogin 6 років тому +8

      Well that is one book and one point of view. There is a reason why they have lawyers for each side in courts, otherwise one could just twist the facts the way they want. I wonder if they explained in the book why Stapleford approached the French judge right after the competition (and in awful manner, started interrogating her in front of others). There were four other judges - why going for the French? She wasn't supposed to know beforehand, right? Or that they didn't even listen to those four other judges during the following hearings. So, I dk about Taiwanchik being involved into this or the FBI just setting him up to extradition him, but that ISU was biased towards the Russians is about 100% obvious.
