I have a theory that the reason Chiaki always says "I think" at the end of her sentences is because she has to. She's a program made to guide the group and perhaps there were supposed to be puzzles or riddles in the island before the killing game started. Being like a teacher, she wasn't allowed to give the answer to the students and instead just giving hints, maybe Junko used this part of her programing to avoid to helping in trials. Except Chiaki found a loophole that made her statements count as suggestions or "hints" to her coding, which was saying "I think" at the end of her sentences as if implying it's just an opinion. Though it's just a fun headcanon I have.
I want this to have this hc but I personally just think that bc she was programmed to be like a teacher- just like you said- that she wanted everyone to come together and solve problems unlike mostly everyone else, especially Hajime who say something like they are absolutely positive, which is what I believe they were going for.
I believe it's meant to be a contrast between her and Kyoko, whereas the latter is extremely sharp and knows exactly what she's talking about 100% of the time, the former is just as smart, but doesn't quite have the same level of confidence, so she's more open about the possibility that she's wrong.
I think another flaw of both Chiaki is her pessimism regarding ultimate talents. she seems to think if you have an ultimate talent, you have no control over what you can do with your life. However a character like Leon contradicts this by quitting baseball and aspiring to be a musician.
I’m not sure Leon really counts since he actually reveals he misses baseball if you complete his free time events. Also the only reason he wanted to be a musician was to be popular, he didn’t even want to learn any instruments.
I think people don't look into her enough they just automatically love her or find her annoying and for me I love her because she is a comfort character but I think especially in the anime you see a kind of sad and lonely side to her giving more depth that people often don't consider
Ikr? I myself don't even like her much(she's a meh, alright character.) but there's actually a very interesting and compelling character, that both people who love/dislike her disregard completely.
I don't think "sad" and "lonely" are good words to describe Chiaki when she was the one who brought her class together, and everyone seemed to adore her.
@@midnalazuli793 I mean before that and how a character acts might not be how they are inside you can tell especially during interaction with hajime in the anime there is a kind of sadness and with the class at the star a sence that she doesn't feel she fits in
@@duvallll_heart9144 I believe that was just shyness. Her class didn't interact with each other very frequently prior to Chisa becoming their homeroom teacher. Socializing with her peers wasn't a familiarity to her, so she was fearful of the unknown. But she quickly gets over this fear once she manages to bring everyone together by playing video games, and doing other stuff that makes her classmates admire her. I don't think she ever really felt "alone" or "different," and even if she did, it would severely undermine the emotional attachment she felt for her classmates at the end of Despair Arc. We all saw how far she was willing to go to be reunited with them.
Chiaki is the closest we have to a "big good" in narrative terms in Danganronpa. (I don't count Makoto since he's the main character) Basically she represents the argument to Junko's entire ideology, even moreso than Makoto I'd argue, and it's intentional. If Junko represents pure despair, Chiaki represents pure hope. The difference between Makoto and Chiaki is that Chiaki represents hope, whereas Makoto actually spreads it, if that makes sense. I think this was an intentional connection given that at the end of Danganronpa 2, this theme was turned on its head, when in fact Makoto failed to give Hajime hope, and instead Chiaki stepped in and filled in that role for him. Basically Chiaki, what she represents in the story is the antithesis to Junko. Makoto on the other hand is the vessel for that antithesis, as opposed to being that thing himself.
Here's something I think is interesting: Junko's execution for Chiaki in real life was being pierced through spears after being betrayed by the person who trusted a lot. Junko may have intentionally done this to foreshadow Mukuro's death where she gets stabbed with spears and gets betrayed by the person she loved the most, Junko. Additionally, A.I Chiaki's execution is based on Junko's execution in the real world, where they both get crushed by something rectangular and heavy. Chiaki's deaths foreshadow the deaths of the Despair twins themselves.
I also think that another dead inspired by Junko was Ouma's dead. He pretended to be the mastermind and he died crushed like the first one by a hidraulic press. It is even more similar to Junko's dead than Tsumugi's, who died crush by a rock
I'm really glad how you touched up upon the problem that Class 77-B has in the anime. I have such a hard time seeing them as close friends when they barely share any interactions with each other. It makes the scene where they all turn to despair feel really underwhelming, like they all only cared about Chiaki instead of each other.
THANK YOU FOR THIS ANALYSIS! Especially with Chiaki's controversy of being a Mary Sue. It's good to see these character analysis come back, since Chiaki's I'd say was long overdue. Hopefully we get to see more in the future as I really enjoy these! Keep at it Weeby!
I really don't think Chiaki qualifies as a "Mary Sue" but I also think she has the same problems as one. The only thing she lacks is self-insert status.
I'm glad these videos are back! I also love the new sprite you use to talk, it looks awesome! I love Chiaki so much, both A.I and human, and I agree with you on how the whole brainwashing thing from the anime is not implemented well, seeing how we never really get to see the 77th class bond. That might also be why I personally prefer Future Arc over Despair Arc, because I noticed much more how rushed Despair Arc was in comparison.
Class 77-B's lack of presence and overall plot irrelevancy definitly weakened the impact of Despair Arc. And Future Arc is generally better written, even if the pacing is really off.
I think part of the problem with the Despair arc is that it was presented as being from Chisa's perspective. Even though not all of it is this way, it's because of this that we had that time skip rather than seeing Chiaki bonding with the rest of the class, and helping them to bond with each other. Also, I love your new avatar!
Or it's because Despair arc was only 11 episodes long. The short length of episodes in this arc(this can also be said for Future arc) leads to the one of the more major problems that the DR3 anime has: poor pacing.
Yeah, that's one of the biggest problems with Despair Arc in general. It was advertised as a prequel, so we could expect it to be about Class 77-B and what their school lives were like prior to becoming Ultimate Despair, but they ended up being barely present in it at all. The only characters who got any sufficient screen time where Mikan and the Imposter, and only the latter was a decent character.
Chiaki is by far my favorite When she died in the game, I cried When I heard she was in an anime, I cheered. When she died in the anime, I flipped the bird at Junko and fell into despair- And now I just read fanfics where Chiaki lives, even though reading fanfics might seem strange-
20:06 I think the reason why she doesn't come up with a strategy is because Chisa is in grave danger and she probably believes they don't have enough time to come up with one (plus there's the stress of the situation). Also she probably believes that with all of them together they can over come anything. Or at least that's what I think.
16:26 You make a good point, but I think the crew behind the anime really did want it to be more fleshed out and well paced with more episodes, but they didn't have the budget to do so and because of that they had to work with what they had. Or at least that's what I think.
Actually, in my opinion Chiaki has another weakness that is thinking that when you have a certain talent , your fate is already decided and there is no orther choice. This is evidence in both Chiaki Human Chiaki: " It doesn't really matter whether you have talent or not. That's cuz, that isn't the end goal. You have greater freedom than we do. All I have are games. But you can go anywhere, and become anything." Pay close attention to this saying, although it sounds true at the beginning, the latter part "You have greater freedom than we do. All I have are games. But you can go anywhere, and become anything." Showing that she seems to prefer being like Hajime and is somewhat negative about having a talent. AI Chiaki is pretty obvious: " Even if you want to fly, you can't, right? Even if you want to swim where you please, you can't right? It's the same for me....Due to the nature of my existence, I will never be able to betray the Future Foundation..." Although some people will say that it implies Chiaki is an AI, but in my opinion it has another meaning, because both think that what they were born for cannot be changed, in Human Chiaki case is the fact that she has a talent. (This part is up to each person's opinion). I think it's quite ironic that the advice Chiaki gave to Hajime, which had so much influence on him, wasn't completely true.Fortunately it seems that in the end only the true part in the advice is shown, and the rest of Chiaki's initial line is not mentioned. I watched it again and saw: Al Chiaki in chapter 6: Having talent isn't the goal. There's something much more important than whether or not you have talent, right?...What's important is that you believe in yourself" and by Hajime in the danganronpa 3 animation " It doesn't really matter whether you have talent or not. Because, That's isn't the end goal." Regarding this part, i think there has been a change since not only Hajime's memories affects AI Chiaki but also everyone, because of the idea that life is not only about talent Chisa said the same "There's more to life than just talent. Interacting with others will build character and help you make memories. Let's help make something more important than talent shine-Your Hope"-----Chisa. Come to think of it, Chisa influenced the class a lot, especially Chiaki. Edit: This is just what I noticed, I'm not sure if I read too much. My English is quite bad so i may made some mistakes, hope you will understand
Her view that you can only do what your talent is also directly contradicts Leon from the first games since he didn't want to baseball despite it being his talent and wanted to pursue music instead which he might've actually been able to do if Junko didn't cause the literal apocalypse
The Despair Arc frustrates me since I don't see any way for the class to rescue their teacher which is odd because Junko will always leave an opportunity for failure so she can experience despair. But then, it is a prequel so she has to obviously win.
Good to see you bring back the character analysis for danganronpa, but I’m so happy you’re doing one for chiaki, she’s my favorite danganronpa character in general she’s best girl
I think Chiaki in the Neo world being so “flawless” and a “Mary Sue” actually elevate her character given that she is the only one who isn’t real. It never bothered me. If anything it made me like her more since I didn’t have a strong opinion on her before that reveal.
This is the first proper analysis video on Chiaki as a whole and I say you did a good job on it! Both Chiaki's, AI and Human, are excellent characters (although the latter is trapped in an anime that leaves much more to be desired) with shocking amount of depth to them. This video is also nice that it disproves the notion that Chiaki is a "perfect girl" that she does have character flaws. What I personally find most interesting about Chiaki, aside from her personal impact on me, is how much subtlety is to her character. Like, in DR2, you can see her getting more and more distraught over murders that happen. She does have emotions, just that she's more on the quieter side. She's also responsible for the most memorable moments in the game.
Very good analysis on Chiaki! Would looove to see you do Miu, there’s so much more to her than meets the eye and I feel like even the game downplays or never explains what she may be thinking (eg, her mental state at the beginning of Ch.4)
I love that these videos are coming back! They help me understand Danganronpa a little better and catch some details that I had not noticed before. You make these characters much more interesting! I like the fact that you insisted on Chiaki not being a Mary Sue, and focused on her potential arcs. I would have loved to see Chiaki's POV during all of SDR2, having the secret mission of saving all of her friends and watching it slowly fail tragically. And imagine if she was still human, with feelings and fear of potential death. Chiaki's despair would be as gut-wrenching as interesting to see. Also, I'd love to point out that it's okay too if a character doesn't seem to have any flaws at first glance! A character could be just likeable and be as interesting and enjoyable as the rest. ps: i'd love an ishimaru analysis, i feel like he has lots of layers that are very interesting to explore :)
In the end, both DR2 Chiaki and DR3 Chiaki are two different beings but act in a similar way. One is a more emotional human, other one is a much calmer AI Also, can't wait to see my boy Great Gozu having his character being analyze for 40+ minutes with extreme detail
@@midnalazuli793 I mean there are times where DR3 Chiaki clearly, visibly show signs of distress, concern and worry while the DR2 one is just you know, *kalm* even at the verge of her own death But yeah you're right, I should've used the term "slightly more expressive" instead
@@peoplesaidmypfpiscursedafb6902 LOL, I know. Even in DR3, the only time I can remember Chiaki showing emotion was during her execution, which kind of forces it out of her.
@@midnalazuli793 Not only that but also many other moments such as: -) Enthusiasm when talking to Hajime about Gala Omega -) Concern and aggression during that one soup scene -) Joy when playing a multi-player game with her classmates -) Being unsure when chosen as the class prep -) A bit disappointed knowing Chisa won't be her teacher for a while -) Cautious, confused, worried, nervous albeit tried to be brave during the whole parade moments. Unable to contact Mikan for some time, Nagito pulling a glock, encounter with Junko -) Etc, etc. I can't remember other moments lol But yeah I got your point fam, I think P.S. Oh yeah I nearly forgot. I don't think DR3 Chiaki's reaction to her execution was forceful. Shocked by being pushed by her own teacher and that agonizing scream when she got impaled on the feet sound realistic to me. Though I think a more natural action for Chiaki would be something "Nah, Junko I'll win your game by not playing it", and then she take a nap inside the elevator while waiting her whole squad saving her
@@peoplesaidmypfpiscursedafb6902 I really don't think she convey much emotion during those second, fourth, fifth, or sixth things. And the only times she displays genuine enthusiasm is whenever someone talks about video games.
0:35 A clear distinction between human Chiaki and AI Chiaki? You've got my attention. I'm fine with idea of AI Chiaki being Mary Sue, because as AI created to suit them, she is supposed to be Mary Sue.
I wonder if Danganronpa S and UTDP Chiaki was written to be like human Chiaki she seems way more energetic in S but I remember in v3 she was more like her ai counterpart
A part of me died when I had to watch both Chiakis deaths..Chiaki was one of the first comfort characters I had whether human or IA, the analysis was amazing it was worth the wait..
Chiaki's... an interesting one. Granted, DR2 is the least I've really thought about and analysed out of the main games, and the anime I only watched once, but I have a really weird relationship with her. Like, I love the character in DR2, but I feel like the anime muddies things needlessly? Like, Kodaka mentioned he created the human Chiaki because the way she talked and acted in the final chapter when she came back felt different, and seeing your explanation I think I get what he meant, but I honestly still don't really feel like it was necessary? Like, I feel like because she's an AI, people assume she must be limited, but people are ALWAYS underestimating AIs in Danganronpa. She has limitations, but to me a big thing with her character is overcoming them to finally help like she wants to, ultimately being able to reveal herself even if she needs Hajime's help. I think because I love the idea of this AI character discovering herself and learning to feel and care beyond just her programming all that, that's why I find the whole "actually the AI based itself on a real person" thing really weird to me. Like, to me it makes Chiaki LESS interesting that she just based herself on a real person instead of being an AI created by Chihiro who's her own being without any further influence than her AI. Also, the fact that out of universe, the clearly designed her to resemble Chihiro in various ways and made a point that she's basically his "daughter" only to then have a real person in-universe with almost identitcal traits... it's one hell of a coincidence. Is Chiaki Chihiro's cousin or something? :v Anyway, I just find this all really weird and confusing, and I feel like it muddies DR2's backstory. Like yes, the DR games always retroactively add stuff into the past about stuff like the Tragedy, but I feel like something like "Chiaki Nanami was a real Hope's Peak student and part of Class 77" feels like vital information that should have been in that game that just... isn't (same with Ryota). I definitely think you summarised the issues with the anime well too, it's just basically a greatest hits for Class 77 without ant real substance, and glossing over deeper characterisation meant people accuse Chiaki of the trite "Mary Sue" character (I'm glad you debunked that too BTW, I feel like it's such a lazy criticism people just throw out when they don't know how to articulate themselves better, not to mention how much more people use this against female characters vs male ones who get away with just as much shit). The thing with Chiaki and a lot of her traits being construed as as result of her being AI is also kind of interesting for me because being Autistic myself, as much as you can construe these traits as AI stuff, they resemble what you see in a lot of Autistic people really closely? Like, the whole "buffer" thing is something I experience for REAL when talking to people for one, like my brain struggles to process information in a smooth way. And of course the classic traits like social awkwardness, the logical and literal mindedness and emotions not being natural to her to the point where she isn't always sure of what she feels or thinks (I wonder if some of it could even be seen as alexithymia, something that occurred to me after SDRA2 cuz of stuff you'll eventually see). She even has her special interest/hyperfixation with gaming. Not really going anywhere with this besides the fact that I guess a lot of common Autistic traits end up in robot/AI characters, like the things people often associate with them are things often seen in us. I don't know if "coding" a character has to be intentional or not, but if not then I'd argue Chiaki is very Autistic coded, regardless of if she's AI or not (I think her human self is similar enough for this to hold up even if you point out the absence of certain traits). Anyway, to end things on an... amusing(?) note, have some more trivia: apparently Kodaka made Chiaki the way she was is because he basically designed her as his ideal girlfriend. To directly quote the interview, "A girl who’s shy, plays retro games, sweet, and has big boobs" is not just Chiaki, but Kodaka's type. If she seems like "waifu bait" as you described the accusations, it's probably because she's Kodaka's ideal waifu, LOL.
This makes me entire *month*, I will replay this so many times it'll run even longer than you took making it (which I know is a lot, obviously). Thank you for the food! ^^
16:32 well that's what you get when cram 2 separate stories arcs in 11-12 episode lengths Honestly, this wouldn't have been a problem if Future arc was a game and Despair arc was the 24-episode long anime.
I actually felt sick when I saw chiaki’s death in the anime. It was such a repulsive death for such a pure character that it nearly made me throw up. Couldn’t think about anything else for days.
Amazing analysis! It always bothered me that people would call her a Mary Sue when that's really not the case. But yeah, glad to see best girl getting some attention again! :D
Glad to see another Danganronpa character analysis video again. Hope you do another Genshin Impact character analysis again soon. Cool Danganronpa sprite btw. This analysis about Chiaki was a very interesting watch and my options are pretty much much the same. The anime was unfortunately rushed, so her character among other things couldn't be expanded upon or explored more. 14:14 Kodaka laughing in the background 24:00 A friend of mine told me a theory that this might have been the spirit of human Chiaki talking to Hajime.
Yeah, I think the idea behind Chiaki was that she was supposed to be a more relaxed version of Kyoko, one that you could consider your "friend" and not just your "partner." In my opinion though, Kyoko was done so much better, because she at least has a reason for why she is the way she is. I also found her dynamic with Makoto was a lot better, the soft guy and the tough girl... it was just cute. Meanwhile, I never thought Hajime or Chiaki had much chemistry at all, it was just the standard "main guy and main girl" trope.
Al chiaki admits that she is not good at reading emotions but she never is shown to be a flaw I mean she communicate with everyone just fine she doesn't do any mistake . She says she can't read people's emotions but she helps everyone emotionally just fine with no struggle she knew what to with akane in chapter 5 she knew how to comfort hajime. Real chiaki was awkward socially but her transformation from being a loner to being a class rep was so quick and forced. Besides we don't see chiaki struggle to talk with the group we don't see chiaki having a hard time asking the group play with her. A marysue has a deeper definition than just being flawless even though chiaki is indead flawless but the deeper definition of a marysue is that a character has a forced writing this character can have flaws , weakness and even character development but it won't matter if the character has forced writing.
Yeah, a Mary Sue will have her flaws, if any, always seen either in a good light, or not acknowledged at all (due to the writing), rendering them useless
@@delthealoulou8221 Yeah but chiaki 's flaws are not really flaws like weaby says chiaki has a naive hope which is not really true if mikan didn't push chiaki to her excution chiaki wouldn't have died and how would chiaki know mikan was brainwashed so this is not a flaw. Al chiaki weaby says she has hard time showing emotions which is not true because the writing of chiaki never made me feel it is true chiaki always does what's right like with akane in chapter 5 . In the anime real chiaki was a loner but it wasn't never explained why that was the case and her arc was so fast it happened in the course of one episode and most of it wasn't really shown to us.
@@rawdasalmataman7908 Oh I mean I wasn't disagreeing with you, I was just saying that, indeed, Mary Sue's flaws will tend to get overlooked (or like, shoved aside like Chiaki's) like that. I honestly think AI Chiaki was really just written that way (because Kodaka doesn't know how to write female characters, most of the time)
@@delthealoulou8221 No. There are many well written female characters like kyoko , toko , etc. Wasn't Al chiaki created by the students' memories of her that means if real chiaki had flaws al chiaki would also have flaws because she was created from the students' memories Please Correct me if I am wrong.
@@rawdasalmataman7908 Ai version of her could have less flaws since technology tends to be better, that's how I see it. Like, she isn't flawless but she is less flawed compared to the other cast since she is literally artificial intelligent.
I'm so happy you made another DR analysis! I've never been a fan or her, but I appreciate the video. That being said, I don't think being unable to protect the group counts as a flaw. Not only that's a requirement for the plot to move forward, but it's also never acknoledged in the story. It seems more like a writing mistake than a character flaw. AI Nanami is pretty flawless, but I wouldn't call her a Mary Sue. Anime Nanami was totally one (or a Canon Sue, if you want to get technical). I mean, Junko herself considered her so important that her mere death would drive all her classmates to despair. Kuzuryuu especially, who became a terrorist not because of the death of his sister but because of the death of Nanami. But you raised a good point about her naivety being an actual flaw, so maybe the title of Canon Sue is too much for her. Well done!
One of the problems of Chiaki is kinda weird but...I dislike the fact that they tried to make her as important as in the game. Yeah, I know it is plot-dependant, and that there would not have a lot more of explainations of why was Chiaki chosen to become an AI, but they just had to take a step back and to change few traits of Chiaki in Danganronpa 3 to make her become a character that we would like. Or maybe they just have to increase her screen time, like as she said, her social awkwardness, but that's not that bad, because I really like IRL Chiaki compared to her AI version. I think what makes Danganronpa characters interesting is their emotions (Mahiru, Mondo, Tenko) or their personality (Byakuya, Kokichi). That's the reason why I think characters like Kirumi or Kyoko are nice at first glance, but they are missing something...and AI Chiaki is missing both. So yes, Chiaki is a nice character, but she has done nothing which really caught my eye, because none of what she has done really was likeable...from my point of view, OBVIOUSLY !
@@11th-lemon I agree, but she was not developped enough so wether they decrease her importance in the plot, or they just increase her screentime. Well, it won't change a lot now 😅
Yes, everyone just assumes she's some kind of snake but like, come on, it's a killing game. I doubt she'd poll something like that in normal circumstances.
@@testedcatgaming7714 exactly!! not to mention the fact she had no idea about the rules of the class trial nor abr the executions so in her perspective it 1 life for the sake of 14 other lives
OH MY GOD i havent watched your channel in a while but I’ve been getting back into dgr and your character sprites are so well made it caught me off guard
Being able to watch your analysis vids is always such a treat. I've been waiting to hear you talk about her for so long, so getting to hear you counter claims about her being an entirely dull mary sue while also touching on missed potential is so satisfying. It's nice to hear it in a concise manner and the vid as a whole flows very smoothly, can't wait for the next one!
I've been waiting for these to come back for so long!! Also since you've done videos on difficult characters like nagito and kokichi maybe we could have something on tsumugi? I'd love to hear your ideas on what if anything is about her true self, her fictional character, etc!
Glad to see the series has made a return :3 I would love to see a character analysis of Shuichi Saihara, particularly focusing on aspects such as the protagonist contrast between him and kaede, how his judgement is clouded by the 2 themes of V3 being truth and lies, how his character develops and matures through the death of kaede, kokichi and the discovery that he is a fictional character, how Keebo appears to be the more heroic like archetype that resolves the final chapter and how this reflects on Shuichi, showing he isn't a perfect character or some Mary Sue who fixes everything, and possibly any opinions you have on his character such as his flaws or any symbolic representation or themes you noticed that appealed to you. Just some suggestions, obviously I'm not trying to tell you how to write your analyses. I loved your video and the insight you provided on one of my favourite killing harmony characters. Keep up the amazing content ^^
This is an excellent analysis! I dismiss when people charge a character with being a "Mary Sue", since more often it means "main character who is female" or "competent female character" than any actual criticism. And as you nicely dissected, even her idealized AI version has serious flaws that stem from her AI nature & reflects the rose-tinted memories of her friends more than who she was (I would argue that AI!Chiaki is a more proactive character than human!Chiaki is, cuz she has to grow into it via Chisa's absence). And yeah, a LOT of that does stem from DR3 being weirdly rushed & not prioritizing the emotional beats as much as they should have.
QQQ317 -- Attempting to see the best of Chiaki (Warning: long comment)(This comment goes into me trying to appreciate Chiaki's character more and liking small stuff about her. The other one goes into my upset at her writing not living up to Danganronpa standards.) I'd say that during watching this video was the time in which I have faced the weight of Chiaki's two identities the most as well as Chiaki's character as a whole. I've always known the thing with some of her flaws. I've known she was socially awkward and the lagging would be interesting for her AI. but what caused me to go like, "Oh, really?" was with the parts of how her gaming skills / preferences was utilized as a way to highlight her way of thinking. She prefers stuff with more precise calculations and more certainty than with unpredictable stuff. She struggles with dating sims because *she has to predict characters and stories.* That's pretty neat. I also find it interesting how she doesn't like touch because it can start something that she can't predict. *Pausing to process before talking is a normal personality trait for many introverts, but it also ties well in to the logic of her being an AI,* and I'd say it's a well handled use of foreshadowing. I've never thought of the fact that while both identities are sweet and considerate, one prioritizes safety and the other prioritizes intimacy, which again, also ties to her purpose as an AI. I mean, why would an AI promote intimacy other than to motivate the group. What use would the Future Foundation have for this? Not being able to save the group despite her being programmed to can make for some interesting writing and conflict that could have been utilized in the narrative. I wonder if they should have translated this D2 social awkwardness and sleepiness to the anime because while some of these traits translate well to her logic as her being an AI, these traits are also key aspects to Chiaki's appeal. I'm going to lean on yes since the startling lack of those traits hurt her D3 quality. Her contrast to most characters in terms of her emotions also makes her interesting. Normally, sweet and considerate is more synonymous with warm and approachable than cold and unemotional, but *Chiaki Nanami somehow manages to make sweet and considerate a complement to the latter than the former*, and I think this also explains a lot of her appeal rather than as a sweet girl (in a way I've never thought of before). It really breaks the stereotype of unemotional =/= not caring by making the two into mutually exclusive traits. I'm not going into the executions because many have already explained the contrast well enough. But... my favorite realization that I have grasped onto are her character designs, namely, the sprite expressions and the color palette. As Weeby commented, she is one of the least emotive characters compared to others with a kind demeanor. When you mentioned that, I considered how even *friggin' Kyoko Kirigiri*, who is supposedly more well known for her emotionless and reserved personality than Chiaki is, has more emotions in her sprites than Chiaki does, and I found that to be an interesting contrast to how even the *human* Kirigiri is more expressive than the *AI* Chiaki is. When the comment of 7:09 popped up, of how her emotions barely reached her eyes, the first thing I thought about was how Human Chiaki's expression of terror *clearly reached her eyes* during her execution, thus hammering down the differences. As per the color palette, look at Chiaki's design in D2 vs. in D3. In SDR2, Chiaki's color palette is overall colder in terms of her dark green jacket and her dull brown-pink hair. In D3, it's warmer with her brown blazer, cream jacket, and her bright peach-blond hair. The difference in tones is especially noticeable if you know a sprite made with in-game Chiaki in a Hope's Peak uniform. Now, SDR2 Chiaki is more analytical and unemotional while D3 Chiaki is more social and expressive. Coincidence? Well... not really... unless you consider the fact that the palette of most students in D3 goes by similar logic. (Sigh...) But... if it was intentional for Chiaki to look like this, that would've been cool. Overall, I really love how you delved deeply into the miniscule details about Chiaki's character that I wouldn't have noticed (espeically considering how I barely know what goes on in the actual games) and analyzed the character after having most to all of the facts from her leadership moments to her sprites and her mirrors. I wish they did more with Chiaki, but in complaining, I admit that I miss out on cool stuff like this, you know?
Maybe it's just me, but I'd love to hear the backstory for your character. You're the only content creator i know that's keeping danganronpa going, so it's as good as canon imo 😤

Really loved the video! Nice to see a analysis vid on a character that most would think wouldn’t need it. With this video made, I’d love to see an analysis video on Makoto Naegi. With how most people perceive him in the fandom, I think it’ll be interesting to do an analysis video on him. 😄
I theory a have about Chiaki, it’s that when she stayed outside the party it’s because they programmed her in a way that would protect them. So they did that to keep Monokuma out of the party.
Chiaki is far from my favorite DR2 character, but I always feel a bit confused when I see people say DR3 proves she is a Mary Sue. DR3 did everyone dirty, both returning and new characters.
Chiaki is awesome because as an AI she is intelligent because she gathers her thoughts from the memory. Also yeah I agree that Chiaki always helps Hajime and tells him stuff. Human Chiaki idk because I never watch anime in dangenronpa 3. Also she is just my favorite character in the entire game.
About the anime, i think it would be better if Junko turned the class 77-B into despair without Chiaki either with manipulating them or that god awful brainwashing. When Chiaki learns that info, she tries to safe them through some hope speech, but she's not the Ultimate Hope, so she fails to do so. There she would have a mental breakdown where she realizes that she had failed Hajime and now she failed her class. And then she gets executed, not by Junko but by her class (imo, the anime made her real version too similar to Makoto and it failed to show just how cruel the Remnants are)
Here's to hoping one day Danganronpa S will have an anime or manga adaptation so that way we can enjoy all of our favorite DR characters without any death. You know like an anime special or something.
@@iceprism367 How cool would it have been if after you completed the whole game (Danganronpa S), you get rewarded with a Danganronpa anime beach short?
I Finally Found This Video Again After Looking For It Since Last Year. And, Honestly, I Know It's Been A Year. But. I Honestly Miss These, I Would Love To See Them Brought Back, and Maybe Some Other Death Game Characters, Like From YTTD, Or 999. I've Watched All The Other DanganRonpa Ones, And Just Miss These Kinds Of Videos
PLEASE DO MAKI HARUKAWA. I love Maki, and I want to know everything about her. She seems like she struggled as a child, and I am a simp, so I care about Maki.
(im about to misspell a lot of names sorry. also spoilers if you haven't played v2). My favorite thing about Chiaki is how different she is from the rest of the group. Every character in the D2 squad besides her and maybe Hagime is somewhat morally grey. Teruteru is a big pervert, the imposter is impersonating someone, fuyuhiko and peko are mafia members, Gundham is a self-proclaimed evil mastermind, sonia really likes researching murderers, etc. Even Nekumaru seems to have had a troubled past based on his comments right before dying in chapter 4. But Chiaki is different, and it makes sense from a story point. She's just a nice contrasting character, and even though I prefer to ship Ibuki with Hajime, Chiaki is still one of my favorite characters in V2. well, besides Nagito, and Gundham, and Ibuki, and Fuyuhiko... man, Danganronpa 2 has a great cast of characters.
Weeby, something I've wanted to ask you since I started watching you is this... If you were to be put into a Danganronpa scenario, what would your Ultimate talent be? I mean, Blaze has one (Ultimate Commentator), so surely you must have one.
@@Cy-Fi that's fair enough yeah
And when the bug happens in chapter 5 which lets her bypass those restrictions, she says "I know" which is fantastic writing
I believe it's meant to be a contrast between her and Kyoko, whereas the latter is extremely sharp and knows exactly what she's talking about 100% of the time, the former is just as smart, but doesn't quite have the same level of confidence, so she's more open about the possibility that she's wrong.
I remember picking up on that but thought they were giver her NPC theme and didn't even consider her being an AI.
I think another flaw of both Chiaki is her pessimism regarding ultimate talents. she seems to think if you have an ultimate talent, you have no control over what you can do with your life. However a character like Leon contradicts this by quitting baseball and aspiring to be a musician.
Leon honestly should've lived longer, it would've been cool as he's probably one of the only ones who DOESN'T like their ultimate ability.
i totally agreed with that
not really a flaw, the talent system is messed up
I’m not sure Leon really counts since he actually reveals he misses baseball if you complete his free time events. Also the only reason he wanted to be a musician was to be popular, he didn’t even want to learn any instruments.
Fr
I think people don't look into her enough they just automatically love her or find her annoying and for me I love her because she is a comfort character but I think especially in the anime you see a kind of sad and lonely side to her giving more depth that people often don't consider
Ikr, like they just disregard Chiaki's entire character because of her A.I form which isn't the real Chiaki.
@@midnalazuli793 I mean before that and how a character acts might not be how they are inside you can tell especially during interaction with hajime in the anime there is a kind of sadness and with the class at the star a sence that she doesn't feel she fits in
@@duvallll_heart9144
I believe that was just shyness.
The joy I got of seeing chiaki and her interaction with hajime in the anime is something I can not even quantify....
:)-
They give off huge "omg bestie haiiiiii" vibes to me
Chiaki is the closest we have to a "big good" in narrative terms in Danganronpa.
This actually makes even more since why Junko would kill her.
99 likes? Lemme make it 100 for you.
Oop-
That's so interesting!
I also think that another dead inspired by Junko was Ouma's dead.
He pretended to be the mastermind and he died crushed like the first one by a hidraulic press.
It is even more similar to Junko's dead than Tsumugi's, who died crush by a rock
@@iciarsoto8860 Damn, that's true...
They needed to have several extra episodes atleast to fix the pacing issues
More I think into Chiaki’s character the more I realize how sad it is when her ai self is like a ghost
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS, FOR 3 WHOLE YEARS
MY FAVOURITE CHARACTER GETTING AN ANALYSIS VIDEO
SAME OMG
When she said she has it ready, I was so hyped~~~ 😆
omg same haha og's unite
Chiaki is by far my favorite
When she died in the game, I cried
When I heard she was in an anime, I cheered.
When she died in the anime, I flipped the bird at Junko and fell into despair-
And now I just read fanfics where Chiaki lives, even though reading fanfics might seem strange-
Wait so when Chiaki is playing on her handheld, its a game (handheld) in a game (murder game) in a game (Neo World Program) in a game (Danganronpa)
Oh boy its feels like it's been a while since a DR character analysis. Looking forward to watching this!
I love Chiaki she's awesome
Actually, in my opinion Chiaki has another weakness that is thinking that when you have a certain talent , your fate is already decided and there is no orther choice.
This is evidence in both Chiaki
Human Chiaki:
" It doesn't really matter whether you have talent or not. That's cuz, that isn't the end goal. You have greater freedom than we do. All I have are games. But you can go anywhere, and become anything."
Pay close attention to this saying, although it sounds true at the beginning, the latter part "You have greater freedom than we do. All I have are games. But you can go anywhere, and become anything." Showing that she seems to prefer being like Hajime and is somewhat negative about having a talent.
AI Chiaki is pretty obvious:
" Even if you want to fly, you can't, right? Even if you want to swim where you please, you can't right? It's the same for me....Due to the nature of my existence, I will never be able to betray the Future Foundation..."
Although some people will say that it implies Chiaki is an AI, but in my opinion it has another meaning, because both think that what they were born for cannot be changed, in Human Chiaki case is the fact that she has a talent.
I watched it again and saw:
Al Chiaki in chapter 6: Having talent isn't the goal.
WOOOO FINALLY, CHARACTER ANALYSIS VIDEOS ARE BACK :D
Finally a character analysis video on my girl! CHIAKI! She’s such a compelling comfort character, love her so much!
One is a more emotional human, other one is a much calmer AI
Also, can't wait to see my boy Great Gozu having his character being analyze for 40+ minutes with extreme detail
I don't think either version of Chiaki can be described as "emotional."
@@midnalazuli793 I mean there are times where DR3 Chiaki clearly, visibly show signs of distress, concern and worry while the DR2 one is just you know, *kalm* even at the verge of her own death
But yeah you're right, I should've used the term "slightly more expressive" instead
@@peoplesaidmypfpiscursedafb6902
LOL, I know. Even in DR3, the only time I can remember Chiaki showing emotion was during her execution, which kind of forces it out of her.
@@midnalazuli793 Not only that but also many other moments such as:
-) Enthusiasm when talking to Hajime about Gala Omega
-) Concern and aggression during that one soup scene
-) Joy when playing a multi-player game with her classmates
-) Being unsure when chosen as the class prep
-) A bit disappointed knowing Chisa won't be her teacher for a while
-) Cautious, confused, worried, nervous albeit tried to be brave during the whole parade moments. Unable to contact Mikan for some time, Nagito pulling a glock, encounter with Junko
-) Etc, etc. I can't remember other moments lol
But yeah I got your point fam, I think
P.S. Oh yeah I nearly forgot. I don't think DR3 Chiaki's reaction to her execution was forceful. Shocked by being pushed by her own teacher and that agonizing scream when she got impaled on the feet sound realistic to me.
Though I think a more natural action for Chiaki would be something "Nah, Junko I'll win your game by not playing it", and then she take a nap inside the elevator while waiting her whole squad saving her
@@peoplesaidmypfpiscursedafb6902
I really don't think she convey much emotion during those second, fourth, fifth, or sixth things. And the only times she displays genuine enthusiasm is whenever someone talks about video games.
I’m so glad the character analysis are back
Chiaki is an amazing character in my opinion and has a lot of depth even though it’s hard to see it.
It’s mostly in her free time events where you get that depth if you can connect the dots. Especially before Ch. 5 or 6
@@Cy-Fi But that's with almost every character
0:35 A clear distinction between human Chiaki and AI Chiaki? You've got my attention.
I'm fine with idea of AI Chiaki being Mary Sue, because as AI created to suit them, she is supposed to be Mary Sue.
LOL, yeah, I do see her as less flawed mostly due to her being an AI more then anything. Technology just has less flaws then us humans XD
I wonder if Danganronpa S and UTDP Chiaki was written to be like human Chiaki she seems way more energetic in S but I remember in v3 she was more like her ai counterpart
in DGRP S it's human chiaki!
A part of me died when I had to watch both Chiakis deaths..Chiaki was one of the first comfort characters I had whether human or IA, the analysis was amazing it was worth the wait..
great video so far! if you haven't already, please read the extra life fanfiction. it's really good and it gives chiaki the happy ending she deserves.
Chiaki's... an interesting one.
I've been waiting for this! The nostalgia from these character analysis. I love it Weeby!
16:32 well that's what you get when cram 2 separate stories arcs in 11-12 episode lengths
Honestly, this wouldn't have been a problem if Future arc was a game and Despair arc was the 24-episode long anime.
So many good foreshadowings for Chiaki being an AI in SDR2..!!
and that one Past-Kodaka dunk on Future-Kodaka 😏
This video is so good! I really like how you discussed the parallels and differences between real world and AI Chiaki.
14:14 Kodaka laughing in the background
24:00 A friend of mine told me a theory that this might have been the spirit of human Chiaki talking to Hajime.
Yeah, I think the idea behind Chiaki was that she was supposed to be a more relaxed version of Kyoko, one that you could consider your "friend" and not just your "partner."
In my opinion though, Kyoko was done so much better, because she at least has a reason for why she is the way she is. I also found her dynamic with Makoto was a lot better, the soft guy and the tough girl... it was just cute. Meanwhile, I never thought Hajime or Chiaki had much chemistry at all, it was just the standard "main guy and main girl" trope.
Yesss I'm so happy Chiaki got a analysis :)
Glad to see the DR character analysis videos come back. :)
I love your analysis videos Weeby! They are always so well done and this one is no exception! Great work!
Another Danganronpa character who I believe might be interesting to analyze is Miu Iruma.
Wasn't Al chiaki created by the students' memories of her that means if real chiaki had flaws al chiaki would also have flaws because she was created from the students' memories
Please Correct me if I am wrong.
Well done!
I just want to mention the fact that you’re such a comfort content creator
I don't think she should have got more screentime. She already got way too much compared to most characters.
@@11th-lemon I agree, but she was not developped enough so wether they decrease her importance in the plot, or they just increase her screentime. Well, it won't change a lot now 😅
I'd love to see a analysis on sayaka next !! she's such a misunderstood character
I’ve been waiting a long time for this interesting character analysis video on my favorite Danganronpa character
Ikr-
YESSS FINALLY THE CHARACTER ANALYSIS’ ARE BACKKK
Chiaki is my fave character so I’M SO HAPPYYY
I’m glad that this video was made, I used to hate Chiaki years ago but I’ve started to really love her and this video made me love her even more
Glad to see the series has made a return :3 I would love to see a character analysis of Shuichi Saihara, particularly focusing on aspects such as the protagonist contrast between him and kaede, how his judgement is clouded by the 2 themes of V3 being truth and lies, how his character develops and matures through the death of kaede, kokichi and the discovery that he is a fictional character, how Keebo appears to be the more heroic like archetype that resolves the final chapter and how this reflects on Shuichi, showing he isn't a perfect character or some Mary Sue who fixes everything, and possibly any opinions you have on his character such as his flaws or any symbolic representation or themes you noticed that appealed to you. Just some suggestions, obviously I'm not trying to tell you how to write your analyses. I loved your video and the insight you provided on one of my favourite killing harmony characters. Keep up the amazing content ^^
love the character sprite of you! great video weeby, i also love your character analysis videos
YEEES! I WANTED THIS THREE YEARS!!!
Yay! Fun to see the analysis videos again!
Chisa convincing human chiaki to play games with the others is one of the many reason I love chisa
I'm glad that videos like this are back and thanks for the analysis of Chiaki! I would like to see the analysis of Byakuya)
QQQ317 -- Attempting to see the best of Chiaki (Warning: long comment)(This comment goes into me trying to appreciate Chiaki's character more and liking small stuff about her. The other one goes into my upset at her writing not living up to Danganronpa standards.)
I'd say that during watching this video was the time in which I have faced the weight of Chiaki's two identities the most as well as Chiaki's character as a whole.
This was a nice in-depth analysis! I also love the use of the new Weeby sprite. :D
This is an amazing analysis, and I love these sprites! Mad did so well with capturing your likeness.

WAKE UP BABE NEW WEEBY NEWZ CHARACTER ANALYSIS JUST DROPPED
Omg, it's been forever since a character analysis!!!!
I’m so happy to see the character analyse are back
Really loved the video! Nice to see a analysis vid on a character that most would think wouldn’t need it. With this video made, I’d love to see an analysis video on Makoto Naegi. With how most people perceive him in the fandom, I think it’ll be interesting to do an analysis video on him. 😄
17:16 well I mean technically it was shown in the credits of every episode but still
That Weeby-Danganronpa avatar took me by surprise but was way too perfect
I theory a have about Chiaki, it’s that when she stayed outside the party it’s because they programmed her in a way that would protect them. So they did that to keep Monokuma out of the party.
Chiaki is far from my favorite DR2 character, but I always feel a bit confused when I see people say DR3 proves she is a Mary Sue. DR3 did everyone dirty, both returning and new characters.
A character analysis! Wow im surprised that is back, and happy!😄
Never really noticed the differences between both Chiaki's until now. Great video.
8:42 The moment that broke so many hearts...
YAY!!! The analysis videos are my favorite!!!
I clicked faster than junkos life span
FINALLYY, THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS💙💙 ALSO LOVE THE WEEBY SPRITE, JUST SAW THAT👏💙
About the anime, i think it would be better if Junko turned the class 77-B into despair without Chiaki either with manipulating them or that god awful brainwashing. When Chiaki learns that info, she tries to safe them through some hope speech, but she's not the Ultimate Hope, so she fails to do so. There she would have a mental breakdown where she realizes that she had failed Hajime and now she failed her class. And then she gets executed, not by Junko but by her class (imo, the anime made her real version too similar to Makoto and it failed to show just how cruel the Remnants are)
This is actually the first time I’ve ever seen a *good* Chiaki character analysis video.
Here's to hoping one day Danganronpa S will have an anime or manga adaptation so that way we can enjoy all of our favorite DR characters without any death. You know like an anime special or something.
Yes please!!! Danganronpa beach episode OVAs when?
I really hope this happens at some point, haha.
@@iceprism367 How cool would it have been if after you completed the whole game (Danganronpa S), you get rewarded with a Danganronpa anime beach short?
@@stefanialenarcik6656 It would be amazing!😭
@@iceprism367 Very, let's hope it'll happen someday
I Finally Found This Video Again After Looking For It Since Last Year. And, Honestly, I Know It's Been A Year. But. I Honestly Miss These, I Would Love To See Them Brought Back, and Maybe Some Other Death Game Characters, Like From YTTD, Or 999. I've Watched All The Other DanganRonpa Ones, And Just Miss These Kinds Of Videos
PLEASE DO MAKI HARUKAWA. I love Maki, and I want to know everything about her. She seems like she struggled as a child, and I am a simp, so I care about Maki.
Love the analysis hope you do more!
Love the new animated sprites ^^
Weeby, something I've wanted to ask you since I started watching you is this... If you were to be put into a Danganronpa scenario, what would your Ultimate talent be? I mean, Blaze has one (Ultimate Commentator), so surely you must have one.
AI Chiaki has another flaw you forgot to mention: Her drawing skills.
the way ill binge watch all your character analyses when i finish dr 3
Yoooooo!!! Character analysis are back !!!!!!!!!!!!! Finding these are what actually lead me here to weeby new !
Sorry if I sound needy but could you do a character analysis of one of the boys from udg (masaru, nagisa, or Jataro)? It’s ok if not :)
Yay! Character analysis is back! I love it :)
i love ur character analysis
